Nathan responded to David, "There's one other thing: the LORD has forgiven your sin. After this, the LORD afflicted the child that Uriah's wife had born to David, and the child became very ill. <td width="50%" class="odd" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/12-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span><span class="btext2">Then Nathan went to his house. And the LORD afflicted the child that Uriah&#8217;s wife bore to David, and he became sick.</span></td></tr></table> <table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" align="center"><tr><td width="50%" class="even" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/12-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span><span class="btext1">David begged God on behalf of the youngster. He fasted, went inside, and spent the night lying on the ground. <td width="50%" class="even" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/12-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span><span class="btext2">David therefore sought God on behalf of the child. And David fasted and went in and lay all night on the ground.</span></td></tr></table> <table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" align="center"><tr><td width="50%" class="odd" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/12-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span><span class="btext1">His closest advisors at the palace got up, remained with him, and tried to help him get up from the ground, but he would not do so. He also wouldn't eat with them.<td width="50%" class="odd" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/12-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span><span class="btext2">And the elders of his house stood beside him, to raise him from the ground, but he would not, nor did he eat food with them.</span></td></tr></table> <table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" align="center"><tr><td width="50%" class="even" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/12-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span><span class="btext1">A week later, the child died, and David's staff was afraid to tell him that the child had died. They were telling themselves, "Look, when the child was still alive, we talked to him but he wouldn't listen to what we said. Now what kind of trouble will he bring on himself if we tell him that the child has died?"<td width="50%" class="even" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/12-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span><span class="btext2">On the seventh day the child died. And the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they said, &#8220;Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spoke to him, and he did not listen to us. How then can we say to him the child is dead? He may do himself some harm.&#8221;</span></td></tr></table> <table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" align="center"><tr><td width="50%" class="odd" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/12-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span><span class="btext1">But as David observed his staff whispering together, he perceived that the child had died, so he asked his staff, "Is the child dead?" They replied, "He has died."<td width="50%" class="odd" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/12-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span><span class="btext2">But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David understood that the child was dead. And David said to his servants, &#8220;Is the child dead?&#8221; They said, &#8220;He is dead.&#8221;</span></td></tr></table> <table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" align="center"><tr><td width="50%" class="even" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/12-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span><span class="btext1">At this, David got up from the ground, washed, anointed himself, changed his clothes, and went into the LORD's tent to worship. Then he went back to his palace where, at his request, they served him food and he ate.<td width="50%" class="even" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/12-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span><span class="btext2">Then David arose from the earth and washed and anointed himself and changed his clothes. And he went into the house of the LORD and worshiped. He then went to his own house. When the child was alive, you fasted and cried. I asked myself, 'Who knows? He confiscated a great amount of war booty that had been plundered from the city, <td width="50%" class="even" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/12-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span><span class="btext2">And he took the crown of their king from his head. The weight of it was a talent of gold, and in it was a precious stone, and it was placed on David&#8217;s head. And he brought out the spoil of the city, a very great amount.</span></td></tr></table> <table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" align="center"><tr><td width="50%" class="odd" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/12-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span><span class="btext1">brought back the people who had lived in it, placing them under conscripted labor with saws, iron picks, and axes. He did this to every Ammonite city, and then David and his entire army returned to Jerusalem.<td width="50%" class="odd" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/12-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span><span class="btext2">And he brought out the people who were in it and set them to labor with saws and iron picks and iron axes and made them toil at the brick kilns. And thus he did to all the cities of the Ammonites.
