Conversation</h2> <p>Discussion in a House committee Tuesday on a proposed change to the name of a state holiday honoring soldiers who fought for the Confederacy took on an extra dose of notoriety because of the identity of the main proponent of the change — a 13-year-old student from Austin named <strong>Jacob Hale</strong>.</p> <p>The Tribune's <strong>Eva Hershaw</strong> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150417110648/http://www.texastribune.org/2015/04/14/13-year-old-panel-change-confederate-heroes-day/">has the rundown</a>:</p> <blockquote> <p><span>In a sharp blue suit and with a tuft of red hair, Jacob took to the podium to explain that in studying the role of Texas in the Civil War, he realized that Confederate Heroes Day was not representative of all positions or events. </span></p> <p><span>"Many Texans were killed for having pro-Union sentiments," Hale said, shuffling his prepared statement. "This is neither accurate nor placed accurately on the calendar."</span></p> </blockquote> <p><span>Hale came up with draft language to change the holiday to Civil War Remembrance Day and persuaded state Rep. <strong>Donna Howard</strong>, D-Austin, to carry <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150417110648/http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/BillLookup/History.aspx?LegSess=84R&Bill=HB1242">the bill</a>.</span></p><div class="ad_container ad_container--adify"> <div class="ad adunit mobile tablet standard" data-adunit="TexasTribune_Content_StoryPage_InsideStory_468x60"> </div> </div> <p><span>But as befits this perpetually divisive topic, Hale's idea drew some heated opposition.</span></p> <p><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150417110648/http://www.texastribune.org/2015/04/14/13-year-old-panel-change-confederate-heroes-day/">Hershaw writes</a>:</p> <blockquote> <p><span>But many of those who testified used their time to clarify what they consider<strong> </strong>clear evidence that Texas was always a Confederate state.
