He was deeply grieved by this transgression and took decisive action to address it. <a href="/ezra/9-3.htm">Ezra 9:3-4</a> describes his reaction: "When I heard this report, I tore my tunic and cloak, pulled out some of the hair from my head and beard, and sat down in horror. Then everyone who trembled at the words of the God of Israel gathered around me because of the unfaithfulness of the exiles, while I sat there appalled until the evening offering."<br><br>Ezra's leadership was instrumental in leading the people to repentance. So Ezra read it aloud from daybreak until noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate in the presence of the men, women, and others who could understand.
