contentedly, and getting on rather than fighting. You’re in the next room, reading a paper. You hear the girls’ quiet chatter fade into silence, and breathe a sigh of relief. A few seconds later, there’s a crash as furniture is toppled over, followed by the girls shrieking and running from room to room, bumping into things and knocking furniture and ornaments over, pulling at their own hair as they continue to shriek at the top of their lungs. They both collapse onto the floor, rolling around as they scream, kicking the air and punching the floor, digging their skulls into the floor as they shriek. No matter what you do, they won’t stop — they just keep screaming and rolling around, grabbing at overhanging cushions and blankets, kicking and flailing their limbs and knocking things over onto themselves. Then, as suddenly as the chaos began, they both stop shrieking and descend into hysterical sobs and crying, gasping and catching their breath. You help them sit up and get a blanket around their shoulders, maybe give them each a cushion to hug to themselves as you try to calm them both down. Once they’ve regained enough of their senses to speak, you ask them what happened.</em></p><p id="bc72" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">Today, you’d get an answer along the lines of: <strong class="ne gv"><em class="oa">“It’s a TikTok trend,”</em></strong> or that they were overcome by something after watching something on <strong class="ne gv"><em class="oa">YouTube </em></strong>or <strong class="ne gv"><em class="oa">Instagram</em></strong>; <strong class="ne gv"><em class="oa">“So-and-so-Influencer made us do it!”</em></strong> they’d insist. You’d warn them away from it, maybe take their devices off of them for the night, then bribe them into a good mood with ice-cream, and a few days later you’d be Googling ADHD symptoms in teenage girls and booking them in for a session with the school counsellor because they’re probably just stressed from exams or bullying or drama with other teenagers, or it was a bizarre attempt to get attention or approval from teenage boys.</p><p id="eb46" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">But in 1692, a man called Samuel Parris had this exact same interaction with his daughter and niece. Once the local doctor had examined them, Samuel asked what on earth had made them act out like that, when they’d never been prone to that kind of excitable behaviour before. The doctor’s diagnosis?</p><h2 id="193a" class="ob oc gu bf od oe of dy og oh oi ea oj nn ok ol om nr on oo op nv oq or os ot bk">“Bewitchment.”</h2><p id="feae" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ou nh ni nj ov nl nm nn ow np nq nr ox nt nu nv oy nx ny nz gn bk">Nowadays, you’d roll your eyes at him or threaten to sue, and assume it was all an elaborate prank. But back in 1692, this outburst was the first documented activity of “bewitchment” which would go on to mark the beginning of the Salem witch trials.</p><p id="c60d" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">In January 1692, Samuel Parris’ 11 year old niece and 9 year old daughter erupted into a hysterical outburst. They were having outbursts, their bodies were contorting against their will and they were suddenly prone to screaming fits. William Griggs, a local doctor, diagnosed them with “bewitchment”. After this, other girls around the same age all began to experience the same symptoms.</p><p id="3d2f" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">In February, there were three arrest warrants for the women who the girls accused of bewitching them: Sarah Good, who was a homeless beggar, Tituba, the Caribbean slave belonging to the Parris’, and Sarah Osborn, who was a very elderly woman. These three women were brought before the village’s magistrates. Some accounts refer to what happened next simply as the three being questioned, but other research heavily implies they would have been tortured.</p><p id="f475" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">During the public trial, the children in the court began shrieking, falling to the floor one by one and shrieking at the top of their lungs, pulling at their hair, scratching their skin, crying as their bodies contorted in bizarre, unnatural ways. As the children cried and shrieked, they all claimed the same thing: that they weren’t in control of their movements or actions, and that the witches were doing it to them by infiltrating their minds with witchcraft and magic. This epidemic of shrieking children and uncontrolled outbursts was enough proof for the magistrate and the town. While Good and Osborn both held onto their plea of innocence, Tituba confessed to every accusation, possibly under the impression it would lead to a less severe punishment. All three were executed for their crimes of witchcraft.</p><p id="c70a" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">The hysteria spread, and more women and girls were accused of being in league with the devil. It escalated from social outcasts and the elderly being accused, to high-standing members of the community and even children as young as four, all being named as witches, which led to them being arrested, tortured, put on trial and executed.</p><p id="eea6" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">In May, a specialised court<em class="oa"> (“Court of Oyer and Terminer” — Court of Hearing and Deciding)</em> was established in order to deal with the cases of witchcraft in the counties of Suffolk, Essex and Middlesex. Their first accused witch was Bridget Bishop in June, who was hanged eight days later. Across the next few months, another twenty-six people were killed — either by hanging, pressing or dying in jail.</p><p id="a2f3" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">While the Salem witch trials technically ended in 1697, it wasn’t until 1711 that the heirs of those executed and accused were given financial compensation. Despite this, the famous hysteria would carry on for decades in other states. Whether it was public trials, religious frenzies or widespread suspicion and bias against outsiders and those who were different, the Salem witch trials left a scar on society. Nobody had been off limits — elderly, young, adults, children, able-bodied, disabled, rich, poor… everybody had been considered as having the capabilities of being an evil, unholy creature, or in league with the devil.</p><p id="ddd4" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk"><em class="oa">But what about the children who started it all?</em></p><p id="d0fa" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">They had a sudden, uncharacteristic outburst which made them behave in a bizarre way — their limbs moved of their own volition, they were hysterical, they were violent, they were uncontrollable and impossible to calm down or reason with. In January 1692, this was a sign of their so-called bewitchment, and proof of them being victims of a malicious witch. But by the end of the frenzy, this same behaviour would have gotten both girls burned at the stake for being in league with the devil himself. After all, someone who was bewitched was also able to be a conduit for the devil, and was already a slave to him, so they had to be a witch. Those same outbursts would have likely gotten them executed, rather than standing on a witness block.</p><p id="c54e" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">And those children in the courtroom, who all fell to the floor shrieking and crying during the first trial? The people would have “questioned” them all — and most likely their families, too, for suspicion of harbouring an evil creature and endangering the public. Had the evil children bewitched their parents into keeping their evil nature a secret? Or were the parents in league with the devil, too?</p><p id="05a0" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">Looking back on it now, we’ve got plenty of options to blame. Religious frenzy is the easy culprit — today, most of us in the Western world just cannot fathom how genuinely people of the time believed in their religion. It was a simple fact to them; asking if they believed in God would likely have seemed as ridiculous as asking if they believed that snow was cold. Most of us cannot fully imagine or comprehend how much religion and religious beliefs were woven into everyday actions, conversations, thoughts and behaviours.</p><p id="e0b3" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">Another culprit we enjoy blaming is the fungus — whether we blame the one in the water they collected from the well to drink, or the one in their bread. Whichever one you pick, you’ll say the same thing: that it caused delusions, hallucinations and may even have contributed to the symptoms. This explanation makes more sense to us; of course they must have been off their faces on mushrooms in order to fully believe this insanity.</p><p id="1fa6" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">A very logical culprit is the social politics happening at the time. When the witch trials began, there was a high amount of immigration, religious turmoil and political unease was so strong that neighbours were turning on each other, and everyone was turning on outsiders. If someone wasn’t from there, they couldn’t be trusted.</p><p id="aea8" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">We like to think we’ve progressed since then, that we’re much more tolerant and not at all prone to social frenzy. But have we really changed all that much?</p><p id="b855" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk"><a class="af nb" rel="noopener" href="/@ronanlukast/neurodiversity-series-are-we-dealing-with-disorders-the-wrong-way-dcbe934f5fb6"><strong class="ne gv">(Psst… is there really any difference between modern day diagnostics and symptoms of witchcraft?)</strong></a></p><p id="a368" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">Let’s look at these situations as though they happened today, and you can make up your own mind.</p><p id="9b88" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk"><strong class="ne gv">Event: Girls aged 8–17 all start having random outbursts of screaming. They scream about things they’re seeing, things they’re imagining, dreams they had which were oh-so real. They scream at the top of their lungs for minutes or even hours on end.</strong></p><p id="4c09" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk"><em class="oa">Reaction: We’d assume it’s ADHD, or Autism. Surely they just don’t understand this isn’t an appropriate way to use their energy. They must be doing it on purpose. Medicate them, put them in therapy, and tell their teachers and friends’ parents about it — they’ll stop once they realise it’s just embarrassing. Shame is the best way to make symptoms like this vanish, after all. At the appointment for medication, the doctor will probably blame it on hormones, which makes perfect sense because a girl this age has no idea whatsoever of what is happening to her body and is not in control of her mind and that is why they must have strict rules and supervision in place, to keep them from endangering themselves until they learn to control themselves.</em></p><p id="4379" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk"><strong class="ne gv">Event: A teenager starts screaming, having involuntary muscle contractions, they contort their body at inconvenient times and to the extent that they damage themselves. They do this unprovoked, at random, and for no apparent reason. In another area, a teenager the same age starts doing the same thing. Then another. Then a child. Then another child. Then a group of teens. Then a group of children. They all exhibit the exact same behaviour, when they were never inclined to it before. As the behaviour continues to spread, more and more of them become upset and claim they have no control over the behaviour, but they don’t offer a reason or cause for it.</strong></p><p id="9296" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk"><em class="oa">Reaction: We’d blame it on a TikTok trend, or another social media or a celebrity. They’re probably just copying another influencer, thinking it’ll get them attention, or thinking it’s funny or trendy. Whatever it is, they’re doing it on purpose and are just taking it too far, until they’re scaring themselves with it. If we ignore it, they’ll stop. We should all just agree they’re doing it on purpose; what other explanation is there?</em></p><p id="3b4a" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk"><strong class="ne gv">Event: A young child randomly starts screaming in class. They’re completely inconsolable. The outburst lasts for five minutes, and has the entire class transfixed. Teachers from other classes come through to see what’s wrong. Everyone’s attention is on the screaming, distraught child. Then three days later, another child in the class does it. Then another, and another, and another. Children in other classes in the school start doing it. When they get asked, they say they’re not doing it on purpose, they just have to do it.</strong></p><p id="9709" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk"><em class="oa">Reaction: We’d say they were influenced by peer pressure; if all their friends were doing it, they would join in, too, as to avoid being outcast. Honestly, it’s quite insensitive — the first child was having some sort of breakdown, clearly, and now everyone has copied them just because it got them attention. Some were even bullied into it by their peers; “I dare you to scream in class,” combined with a pact to not tell who encouraged them to do it would result in the entire school screaming, sooner or later. It’s best to make it clear to them that behaviour of this kind is not welcome in school, and anyone who does it will have their parents called and they will be punished by having luxuries denied.</em></p><p id="e025" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk"><strong class="ne gv">Event: A teenager screams, then faints in the middle of the lunch hall at school. Two days later, their sibling says it happened again over the weekend. Nobody knows why, and rumours are running wild. On Tuesday, someone else screams then falls down the stairs. On Wednesday, someone else screams and stumbles around their classroom, clawing at their hair, until they collapse. This continues, each one escalating. Nobody knows what happened to them, nobody has a coherent explanation, and none of them have the same medical condition.</strong></p><p id="ba91" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk"><em class="oa">Reaction: We’d blame it on a case of copy-cat syndrome — the first person who did it got a lot of attention for it, so surely if they do it as well, they’ll get the same amount of attention. It’ll pass once they all get bored of it, though.</em></p><p id="55e2" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk"><strong class="ne gv">Event: Across six different areas, groups of teens and children exhibit the same behaviour — they roll around on the floor, they scream, they shout random words, they show zero control over their movements and have bizarre muscle spasms, when they never have before. When they calm down, we ask them what’s wrong, and they say they were made to do it by “The Good One” or “The Tituba”.</strong></p><p id="9455" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk"><em class="oa">Reaction: We’d go into a frenzy. Who was responsible for influencing this? We have to cancel them. We have to make them stop. It’s us against them, for all of our safety and sanity. We don’t understand how they have this much influence, but we have to stop them — we have to save our children from them. We have to shut down the platforms they use, we have to ban them, we have to see them socially hanged. They can’t be allowed to continue living the way they are, when they’re causing this much damage to young, impressionable children and teens.</em></p><h2 id="b227" class="ob oc gu bf od oe of dy og oh oi ea oj nn ok ol om nr on oo op nv oq or os ot bk">Do our reactions really differ from those reactions of people centuries ago?</h2><p id="1971" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ou nh ni nj ov nl nm nn ow np nq nr ox nt nu nv oy nx ny nz gn bk">Our mobs wield social media accounts, trending hashtags, hyperbolic headlines and inflammatory accusations. Instead of hanging them, we’ll burn the person’s reputation and career and social credibility. We turn every homeless person, every “unfortunate”, every Boo Radley-esque person who has been branded an “outcast” by society into a villain, a perpetrator, because they must be the ones to blame for corrupting our good, pure society.</p><p id="1617" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">We’ve also placed celebrities and influencers into this classification — they’re so far away from us, they’re up on the metaphorical hill, away from the day to day worries and concerns and common sense of us common peasants, but they have so much mystery and influence that they can make our children do their bidding, and they have such a wide reach that really anyone with a weak mind could fall prey to them and their shameful, wicked, sinful and corrupt ways. Anyone could be seduced by the whispered promises of fame and attention and validation — and anyone could be coerced into doing impossible, unthinkable things in a bid to make those whispers come true.</p><p id="f76a" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">We still see people who act differently from our (so-called) long-established social norms as being an outcast. Back then, we said they were in league with the devil; now, we say they’re disabled, or have Autism or ADHD or Tourettes, or they’re just a little bit eccentric and warn others away from them, or they’re sick in the head, and surely nobody wants to subject themselves to that on purpose, so you must stay away from them, otherwise you’ll catch it! But as soon as a group of people begin acting in a similar way, it must be a trend or a bid for attention, or they’ve glamourised the notion of being different because they’re not socially mature enough yet to know that the only good kind of validation and attention is the kind given when you conform and sacrifice your individuality for convention, and when you mask your symptoms to make everyone else more comfortable than yourself.</p><p id="c6c0" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">We’ve stopped diagnosing people with bewitchment. Instead, we diagnose them as being Different. Socially Stunted. Having a brain which is wired “wrong” or different from “everyone else’s”. Learning difficulties. These syndromes and disorders and conditions might not result in them being dragged through a town by their ankles and rope tied to a horse (anymore) but they do result in the emotional and social equivalent. Because when you’ve had a label slapped on you from a young age, either by a doctor or teachers or other children and their parents, whether that label is official or just sensed… we feel like we’ve been tied to a horse by our ankles, and everyone is pointing and laughing as we get dragged through the town — but they’re all shouting and laughing at the fact we can’t figure out how to stand back up, and <em class="oa">“Hey! You’re meant to be on top of the horse!”</em> At the end, when the rope snaps or the horse gets caught and we get pulled upright, we don’t get pelted with rocks. Instead, we get told that we’re silly and a bit slow, because everyone else knows you’re supposed to be in the horse’s saddle, and didn’t anyone explain that to us? This would be explained to us in a patronising voice by the same people who tied our ankles to the horse in the first place, and they would be genuinely confused and concerned over how or why we hadn’t figured that basic fact out for ourselves.</p><p id="6a84" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk"><em class="oa">Don’t believe me?</em></p><h2 id="0651" class="ob oc gu bf od oe of dy og oh oi ea oj nn ok ol om nr on oo op nv oq or os ot bk">Here’s a social experiment for you to try, then:</h2><p id="d0e3" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ou nh ni nj ov nl nm nn ow np nq nr ox nt nu nv oy nx ny nz gn bk"><strong class="ne gv">Carry a large stuffed animal around with you for a week. </strong>Take it everywhere. Take it to work, take it grocery shopping, take it to meet up with friends, carry it around the house, take it out to the garden, take it to class, take it to the bathroom, take it when you go out with friends, take it on dates.</p><p id="bc1b" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">The purpose of this is to mark you out as “Different” from everyone else. Walking around with an obnoxious stuffed animal that you have no way to hide is how it feels to walk around with something diagnosable, and which everyone else interprets as meaning “Lesser” or “Other.”</p><p id="52fc" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">Notice<strong class="ne gv"> the looks</strong> you get from people, both strangers and people you know.</p><p id="97f2" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">Notice <strong class="ne gv">how oddly people behave around you</strong> all of a sudden, for breaking a social norm.</p><p id="ee82" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">Notice how <strong class="ne gv">most people are either patronising, amused or dismissive</strong> when they talk with you.</p><p id="7451" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">Notice how almost <strong class="ne gv">nobody takes you seriously</strong>.</p><p id="fb96" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">Notice how <strong class="ne gv">you can’t trust whether someone is pitying you or empathising with you.</strong></p><p id="2daf" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">Notice how <strong class="ne gv">you aren’t sure whether people are staring at you</strong> or at the stuffed animal.</p><p id="f5dd" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">Notice how <strong class="ne gv">people automatically direct questions about you to someone accompanying you</strong>, because surely you can’t have the intellectual ability to answer questions about life or yourself or offer social observations or make decisions, if you’re so broken that you’re carrying a giant stuffed animal around with you in public.</p><p id="2863" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">Notice how <strong class="ne gv">you get blamed for everything</strong>, even inadvertently — and take note of how often the incident or fault is blamed on the fact you’re carrying the giant stuffed toy.</p><p id="202f" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">Notice how <strong class="ne gv">nothing could possibly be your fault</strong> because you just don’t understand or care about the disruption and inconvenience you’re causing those around you by not being the same as them.</p><p id="52ed" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">Notice <strong class="ne gv">the hypocrisy of these two states, and how they coexist</strong>.</p><p id="3eb0" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">Notice how<strong class="ne gv"> isolated you feel</strong>, and how overly self-aware you are of the attention on you.</p><p id="ef27" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">Notice how <strong class="ne gv">hyper aware you are</strong> of the stuffed animal.</p><p id="62fb" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk"><strong class="ne gv">This is how it feels to be like us.</strong> This is how it feels to be “other”. This is how it feels to be “different”.</p><p id="b1e1" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk"><strong class="ne gv">This is how it feels</strong> to have today’s equivalent of “bewitched” stamped on you by society. This is how it feels to have Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, ADHD, Tourette's or any other condition which impacts your behaviour, perception and processing.</p><p id="6980" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">The difference is you can put the stuffed animal down at the end of the week and be celebrated for being normal again. We can’t. We can only hide it behind our back and hope no one asks us to turn around. We can only hide it until our arms get tired, or we have to juggle it with something else someone asks us to hold, or someone hugs us. or they get too close.</p><p id="18c1" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nc nd gu ne b nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz gn bk">Yet we’ll still be celebrated and accepted by society, if we just… hide it. The problem is you can’t hide symptoms or traits forever — it’s just as hard as trying to hide a giant, obnoxious stuffed animal which is glued to you. Sooner or later, we just can’t stop it from being obvious. Sooner or later, we can’t hide it anymore. This mentality brands “them” as being the ones to blame for anything which goes wrong — in their own lives, or in society. They both collapse onto the floor, rolling around as they scream, kicking the air and punching the floor, digging their skulls into the floor as they shriek. No matter what you do, they won’t stop — they just keep screaming and rolling around, grabbing at overhanging cushions and blankets, kicking and flailing their limbs and knocking things over onto themselves. Then, as suddenly as the chaos began, they both stop shrieking and descend into hysterical sobs and crying, gasping and catching their breath. You help them sit up and get a blanket around their shoulders, maybe give them each a cushion to hug to themselves as you try to calm them both down. While Good and Osborn both held onto their plea of innocence, Tituba confessed to every accusation, possibly under the impression it would lead to a less severe punishment. Their first accused witch was Bridget Bishop in June, who was hanged eight days later. Whether it was public trials, religious frenzies or widespread suspicion and bias against outsiders and those who were different, the Salem witch trials left a scar on society. In January 1692, this was a sign of their so-called bewitchment, and proof of them being victims of a malicious witch. But by the end of the frenzy, this same behaviour would have gotten both girls burned at the stake for being in league with the devil himself. After all, someone who was bewitched was also able to be a conduit for the devil, and was already a slave to him, so they had to be a witch. Religious frenzy is the easy culprit — today, most of us in the Western world just cannot fathom how genuinely people of the time believed in their religion. It was a simple fact to them; asking if they believed in God would likely have seemed as ridiculous as asking if they believed that snow was cold. Shame is the best way to make symptoms like this vanish, after all. Then a group of teens. Then a group of children. They all exhibit the exact same behaviour, when they were never inclined to it before. Because when you’ve had a label slapped on you from a young age, either by a doctor or teachers or other children and their parents, whether that label is official or just sensed… we feel like we’ve been tied to a horse by our ankles, and everyone is pointing and laughing as we get dragged through the town — but they’re all shouting and laughing at the fact we can’t figure out how to stand back up, and “Hey! You’re meant to be on top of the horse!” At the end, when the rope snaps or the horse gets caught and we get pulled upright, we don’t get pelted with rocks. Instead, we get told that we’re silly and a bit slow, because everyone else knows you’re supposed to be in the horse’s saddle, and didn’t anyone explain that to us?
