<t><p class="indent1">He has shattered my bones. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>He has besieged and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>He has made me live in dark places <t><p class="indent1">Like those who have long been dead. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>He walled me in so that I cannot get out; <t><p class="indent1">He has weighted down my chain. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Even when I cry out and shout for help, <t><p class="indent1">He shuts out my prayer. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>He has blocked my ways with cut stone; <t><p class="indent1">He has made my paths crooked. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>He is to me like a bear lying in wait, <t><p class="indent1">And like a lion [hiding] in secret places. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>He has turned aside my ways and torn me in pieces; <t><p class="indent1">He has made me desolate. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>He has bent His bow <t><p class="indent1">And set me as a target for the arrow. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>He has caused the arrows of His quiver <t><p class="indent1">To enter my inner parts. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>I have become the [object of] ridicule to all my people, <t><p class="indent1">And [the subject of] their <i>mocking</i> song all the day. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>He has filled me with bitterness; <t><p class="indent1">He has made me drunk with wormwood (bitterness). <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>He has broken my teeth with gravel; <t><p class="indent1">He has [covered me with ashes and] made me cower in the dust. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>My soul has been cast far away from peace; <t><p class="indent1">I have forgotten happiness. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>So I say, “My strength has perished <t><p class="indent1">And so has my hope <i>and</i> expectation from the LORD.” <p class="hdg">Hope of Relief in God’s Mercy</p><poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Remember [O LORD] my affliction and my wandering, the wormwood and the gall (bitterness). <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>My soul <i>continually</i> remembers them <t><p class="indent1">And is bowed down within me. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>But this I call to mind, <t><p class="indent1">Therefore I have hope. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>It is because of the LORD’S lovingkindnesses that we are not consumed, <t><p class="indent1">Because His [tender] compassions never fail. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>They are new every morning; <t><p class="indent1">Great <i>and</i> beyond measure is Your faithfulness. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>“The LORD is my portion <i>and</i> my inheritance,” says my soul; <t><p class="indent1">“Therefore I have hope in Him <i>and</i> wait expectantly for Him.” <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>The LORD is good to those who wait [confidently] for Him, <t><p class="indent1">To those who seek Him [on the authority of God’s word]. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>It is good that one waits quietly <t><p class="indent1">For the salvation of the LORD. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>It is good for a man that he should bear <t><p class="indent1">The yoke [of godly discipline] in his youth. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Let him sit alone [in hope] and keep quiet, <t><p class="indent1">Because God has laid it on him [for his benefit]. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>Let him put his mouth in the dust [in recognition of his unworthiness]; <t><p class="indent1">There may yet be hope. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Let him give his cheek to the one who strikes him; <t><p class="indent1">Let him be filled with reproach. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>For the Lord will not reject forever, <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>For if He causes grief, <t><p class="indent1">Then He will have compassion <t><p class="indent1">According to His abundant lovingkindness <i>and</i> tender mercy. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>For He does not afflict willingly <i>and</i> from His heart <t><p class="indent1">Or grieve the children of men. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>To trample <i>and</i> crush under His feet <t><p class="indent1">All the prisoners of the land, <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>To deprive a man of justice <t><p class="indent1">In the presence of the Most High, <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>To defraud a man in his lawsuit-- <t><p class="indent1">The Lord does not approve of these things. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>Who is there who speaks and it comes to pass, <t><p class="indent1">Unless the Lord has authorized <i>and</i> commanded it? <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>Is it not from the mouth of the Most High <t><p class="indent1">That both adversity (misfortune) and good (prosperity, happiness) proceed? <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>Why should any living mortal, or any man, <t><p class="indent1">Complain [of punishment] in view of his sins? <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>Let us test and examine our ways, <t><p class="indent1">And let us return to the LORD. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>Let us lift up our hearts and our hands [in prayer] <t><p class="indent1">Toward God in heaven; <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>We have transgressed and rebelled, <t><p class="indent1">You have not pardoned. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>You have covered <i>Yourself</i> with anger <t><p class="indent1">And pursued us; <t><p class="indent1">You have slain [without pity] and have not spared. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>You have covered Yourself with a cloud <t><p class="indent1">So that no prayer can pass through. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>You have made us scum and refuse <t><p class="indent1">Among the peoples (Gentile nations). <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>All our enemies have gaped at us. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>Panic and pitfall (traps, danger) have come on us, <t><p class="indent1">Devastation and destruction. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span>My eyes overflow with streams of tears <t><p class="indent1">Because of the destruction of the daughter of my people (Jerusalem). <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-49.htm"><b>49</b></a></span>My eyes overflow unceasingly, <t><p class="indent1">Without stopping, <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-50.htm"><b>50</b></a></span>Until the LORD looks down <t><p class="indent1">And sees from heaven. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-51.htm"><b>51</b></a></span>My eyes [see things that] bring pain to my soul <t><p class="indent1">Because of all the daughters of my city. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-52.htm"><b>52</b></a></span>Without cause my enemies <t><p class="indent1">Hunted me down like a bird; <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-53.htm"><b>53</b></a></span>They silenced me in the pit <t><p class="indent1">And placed a stone over me. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-54.htm"><b>54</b></a></span>The waters ran down on my head; <t><p class="indent1">I said, “I am cut off (destroyed)!” <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-55.htm"><b>55</b></a></span>I called on Your name, O LORD, <t><p class="indent1">Out of the lowest pit. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-56.htm"><b>56</b></a></span>You have heard my voice, <p class="indent1stline">“Do not hide Your ear from my <i>prayer</i> for relief, <t><p class="indent1">From my cry for help.” <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-57.htm"><b>57</b></a></span>You drew near on the day I called to You; <t><p class="indent1">You said, “Do not fear.” <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-58.htm"><b>58</b></a></span>O Lord, You have pleaded my soul’s cause [You have guided my way and protected me]; <t><p class="indent1">You have rescued <i>and</i> redeemed my life. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-59.htm"><b>59</b></a></span>O LORD, You have seen the wrong [done to me]; <t><p class="indent1">Judge my case. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-60.htm"><b>60</b></a></span>You have seen all their vengeance, <t><p class="indent1">All their schemes against me. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-61.htm"><b>61</b></a></span>You have heard their reproach, O LORD, <t><p class="indent1">And all their schemes against me. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-62.htm"><b>62</b></a></span>The lips and whispering of my assailants <t><p class="indent1">Are against me all day long. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-63.htm"><b>63</b></a></span>Look at their sitting and their rising [their actions and secret counsels]; <t><p class="indent1">I am their mocking song [the subject of their ridicule]. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-64.htm"><b>64</b></a></span>You will repay them, O LORD, <t><p class="indent1">According to the work of their hands. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/lamentations/3-65.htm"><b>65</b></a></span>You will harden their hearts;
