critically endangered bulbous plant with high potential on the international floriculture market. In the present study, an efficient protocol for in vitro plantlet regeneration through somatic embryogenesis was developed. Embryogenic callus was established on Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium supplemented with various concentrations and combinations of picloram and thidiazuron (TDZ). A high number of SEs (28.5 ± 1.49) with at different developmental stages of somatic embryos (SEs: globular embryos, torpedo and cotyledon embryo with bipolar characteristics) was obtained on Murashige and Skoog (MS) (Murashige and Skoog 1962) medium with 2.5 μM picloram, and 1.0 μM TDZ. Histological and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis confirmed the presence of somatic embryos. Mature somatic embryos germinated and developed into plantlets after 6 weeks on half/full strength MS medium. High plant regeneration frequency (91.11 %) was achieved on full-strength MS medium supplemented with 5 μM phloroglucinol (PG). Well-developed healthy plantlets were successfully acclimatized in the greenhouse with a survival rate of 80%. The result of this study is beneficial in the mass propagation of high-quality Lachenalia viridiflora clonal plants for the commercial horticultural market and also provides a platform for future genetic transformation studies on the plant. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=horticultural%20plant" title="horticultural plant">horticultural plant</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lachenalia%20viridiflora" title=" Lachenalia viridiflora"> Lachenalia viridiflora</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=phloroglucinol" title=" phloroglucinol"> phloroglucinol</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=somatic%20embryogenesis" title=" somatic embryogenesis"> somatic embryogenesis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=thidiazuron" title=" thidiazuron"> thidiazuron</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/53535/somatic-embryogenesis-of-lachenalia-viridiflora-a-critically-endangered-ornamental-geophyte-with-high-floricultural-potential" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/53535.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">628</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">65</span> Molecular Insights into the Genetic Integrity of Long-Term Micropropagated Clones Using Start Codon Targeted (SCoT) Markers: A Case Study with Ansellia africana, an Endangered, Medicinal Orchid</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Paromik%20Bhattacharyya">Paromik Bhattacharyya</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Vijay%20Kumar"> Vijay Kumar</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Van%20Staden"> Johannes Van Staden</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Micropropagation is an important tool for the conservation of threatened and commercially important plant species of which orchids deserve special attention. Ansellia africana is one such medicinally important orchid species having much commercial significance. Thus, development of regeneration protocols for producing clonally stable regenerates using axillary buds is of much importance. However, for large-scale micropropagation to become not only successful but also acceptable by end-users, somaclonal variations occurring in the plantlets need to be eliminated. In the light of the various factors (genotype, ploidy level, in vitro culture age, explant and culture type, etc.) that may account for the somaclonal variations of divergent genetic changes at the cellular and molecular levels, genetic analysis of micropropagated plants using a multidisciplinary approach is of utmost importance. In the present study, the clonal integrity of the long term micropropagated A. africana plants were assessed using advanced molecular marker system i.e. Start Codon Targeted Polymorphism (SCoT). Our studies recorded a clonally stable regeneration protocol for A. africana with a very high degree of clonal fidelity amongst the regenerates. The results obtained from these molecular analyses could help in modifying the regeneration protocols for obtaining clonally stable true to type plantlets for sustainable commercial use. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=medicinal%20orchid%20micropropagation" title="medicinal orchid micropropagation">medicinal orchid micropropagation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=start%20codon%20targeted%20polymorphism%20%28SCoT%29" title=" start codon targeted polymorphism (SCoT)"> start codon targeted polymorphism (SCoT)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=RAP%29" title="RAP)">RAP)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=traditional%20African%20pharmacopoeia" title=" traditional African pharmacopoeia"> traditional African pharmacopoeia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=genetic%20%20fidelity" title=" genetic fidelity"> genetic fidelity</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/53547/molecular-insights-into-the-genetic-integrity-of-long-term-micropropagated-clones-using-start-codon-targeted-scot-markers-a-case-study-with-ansellia-africana-an-endangered-medicinal-orchid" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/53547.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">426</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">64</span> A Framework for Vacant City-Owned Land to Be Utilised for Urban Agriculture: The Case of Cape Town, South Africa</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=P.%20S.%20Van%20Staden">P. The new City of Cape Town zoning scheme includes an Urban Agriculture zoning for the first time. Unstructured qualitative interviews among town planners revealed their optimism about this inclusion as it will provide low-income residents with opportunities to generate an income. An existing farming community at Philippi, located within the municipal boundary of the city, was approached and empirical data obtained through questionnaires provided proof that urban agriculture could be viable in a coastal metropolitan city such as Cape Town even if farmers only produce for their own households. The lease method proposed for urban agriculture is a usufruct agreement conferring the right to another party, other than the legal owner, to enjoy the use and advantages of the property. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=land%20uses" title="land uses">land uses</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=urban%20agriculture" title=" urban agriculture"> urban agriculture</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=agriculture" title=" agriculture"> agriculture</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=food%20engineering" title=" food engineering"> food engineering</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/1494/a-framework-for-vacant-city-owned-land-to-be-utilised-for-urban-agriculture-the-case-of-cape-town-south-africa" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/1494.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">298</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">63</span> The Design and Implementation of Interactive Storybook Reading to Develop the Reading Comprehension of ESL Learners</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=A.%20van%20Staden">A. van Staden</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=A.%20A.%20van%20Rhyn"> A. This study developed and implemented an interactive storybook intervention program to support the reading development of ESL learners. The researchers utilized an experimental pre-test/post-test research design, whereby 80 ESL learners from five participating schools, were purposively sampled to take part in this study. This paper, inter alia, discusses the key features of this intervention program whilst also reporting the results of the experimental investigation. Results are promising and show a significant improvement in the mean scores of the learners in the experimental group. Moreover, the results show the value of interactive storybook reading in creating responsive literacy environments to develop the literacy skills of ESL learners. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ESL%20learners" title="ESL learners">ESL learners</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=reading%20comprehension" title=" reading comprehension"> reading comprehension</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Interactive%20story%20book%20reading" title=" Interactive story book reading"> Interactive story book reading</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=South%20Africa" title=" South Africa"> South Africa</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/108821/the-design-and-implementation-of-interactive-storybook-reading-to-develop-the-reading-comprehension-of-esl-learners" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/108821.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">134</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">62</span> Shopping Cart System: Load Balancing and Fault Tolerance in the OSGi Service Platform</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Irina%20Astrova">Irina Astrova</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Arne%20Koschel"> Arne Koschel</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Thole%20Schneider"> Thole Schneider</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Westhuis"> Johannes Westhuis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=J%C3%BCrgen%20Westerkamp"> Jürgen Westerkamp</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The main purpose of this paper was to find a simple solution for load balancing and fault tolerance in OSGi. Early detection of carried handguns through closed-circuit television (CCTV) can aid in preventing potential gun violence. However, CCTV operators have a limited attention span. Machine learning approaches to automating the detection of dangerous gun carriers provide a way to aid CCTV operators in identifying these individuals. This study provides insight into the relationship between human key points extracted using human pose estimation (HPE) and their intention to fire a weapon. We examine the feature importance of each keypoint and their correlations. We use principal component analysis (PCA) to reduce the feature space and optimize detection. Finally, we run a set of classifiers to determine what form of classifier performs well on this data. We find that hips, shoulders, and knees tend to be crucial aspects of the human pose when making these predictions. Furthermore, the horizontal position plays a larger role than the vertical position. Of the 66 key points, nine principal components could be used to make nonlinear classifications with 86% accuracy. Furthermore, linear classifications could be done with 85% accuracy, showing that there is a degree of linearity in the data. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=feature%20engineering" title="feature engineering">feature engineering</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=human%20pose" title=" human pose"> human pose</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=machine%20learning" title=" machine learning"> machine learning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=security" title=" security"> security</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/155235/the-relationship-between-human-pose-and-intention-to-fire-a-handgun" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/155235.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">93</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">60</span> Trusting the Big Data Analytics Process from the Perspective of Different Stakeholders</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sven%20Gehrke">Sven Gehrke</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Ruhland"> Johannes Ruhland</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Data is the oil of our time, without them progress would come to a hold [1]. The approach of this paper is to benefit from this merger and present a framework of a production network with scalable production capacity and low capital expenditure by adaptation of the IT concept 'everything as a service' into the production environment. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=digital%20manufacturing%20system" title="digital manufacturing system">digital manufacturing system</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=everything%20as%20a%20service" title=" everything as a service"> everything as a service</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=reconfigurable%20production" title=" reconfigurable production"> reconfigurable production</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=value%20network" title=" value network"> value network</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/75074/an-approach-of-high-scalable-production-capacity-by-adaption-of-the-concept-everything-as-a-service" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/75074.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">343</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">57</span> Reliability of Intra-Logistics Systems – Simulating Performance Availability</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Steffen%20Schieweck">Steffen Schieweck</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Dregger"> Johannes Dregger</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sascha%20Kaczmarek"> Sascha Kaczmarek</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Michael%20ten%20Hompel"> Michael ten Hompel</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Logistics distributors face the issue of having to provide increasing service levels while being forced to reduce costs at the same time. Same-day delivery, quick order processing and rapidly growing ranges of articles are only some of the prevailing challenges. One key aspect of the performance of an intra-logistics system is how often and in which amplitude congestions and dysfunctions affect the processing operations. By gaining knowledge of the so called ‘performance availability’ of such a system during the planning stage, oversizing and wasting can be reduced whereas planning transparency is increased. State of the art for the determination of this KPI are simulation studies. However, their structure and therefore their results may vary unforeseeably. This article proposes a concept for the establishment of ‘certified’ and hence reliable and comparable simulation models. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=intra-logistics" title="intra-logistics">intra-logistics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=performance%20availability" title=" performance availability"> performance availability</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=simulation" title=" simulation"> simulation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=warehousing" title=" warehousing"> warehousing</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/16846/reliability-of-intra-logistics-systems-simulating-performance-availability" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/16846.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">454</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">56</span> Percolation Transition in an Agglomeration of Spherical Particles</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20J.%20Schneider">Johannes J. Two types of particles are considered, with one of them being able to create connections to neighboring particles of the same type, thus forming a network within the agglomeration at the bottom of a cylinder. The current study tests the validity of Feldstein&ndash;Horioka puzzle for 5 BRICS countries. The sample period of the study runs from 2001 to 2014. The study uses the following parameter estimates well known as the Fully Modified OLS (FMOLS), and Dynamic OLS (DOLS). The results of the study show that investment and savings are cointegrated in the long run. The parameters estimated using FMOLS and DOLS are 0.85 and 0.74, respectively. These results imply that policy makers within BRICS countries have to consider flexible monetary and fiscal policy instruments to influence the mobility of capital with the bloc. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Feldstein%20and%20Horioka%20puzzle" title="Feldstein and Horioka puzzle">Feldstein and Horioka puzzle</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=saving%20and%20investment" title=" saving and investment"> saving and investment</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=panel%20models" title=" panel models"> panel models</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=BRICS%20countries" title=" BRICS countries"> BRICS countries</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/61954/testing-the-validity-of-feldstein-horioka-puzzle-in-brics-countries" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/61954.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">259</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">54</span> An Analysis of the Relationship between Manufacturing Growth and Economic Growth in South Africa: A Cointegration Approach</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20T.%20Tsoku">Johannes T. The paper employed the Johansen cointegration to test the Kaldor&rsquo;s hypothesis. The Johansen cointegration results revealed that there is a long run relationship between GDP, manufacturing, service and employment. The Granger causality results revealed that there is a unidirectional causality running from manufacturing growth to GDP growth. The overall findings of the study confirm that Kaldor&rsquo;s first law of growth is applicable in South African economy. Therefore, investment strategies and policies should be alignment towards promoting growth in the manufacturing sector in order to boost the economic growth of South Africa. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cointegration" title="cointegration">cointegration</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=economic%20growth" title=" economic growth"> economic growth</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kaldor%E2%80%99s%20law" title=" Kaldor’s law"> Kaldor’s law</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=manufacturing%20growth" title=" manufacturing growth"> manufacturing growth</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/60865/an-analysis-of-the-relationship-between-manufacturing-growth-and-economic-growth-in-south-africa-a-cointegration-approach" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/60865.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">387</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">53</span> Digital Transformation in Production Planning and Control: Evaluation of the Organizational Readiness</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tobias%20Wissing">Tobias Wissing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Peter%20Burggr%C3%A4f"> Peter Burggräf</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Wagner"> Johannes Wagner</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Cost pressure, competitiveness and the increasing turbulence of globalized saturated markets has been the driver for a variety of research activities in the field of production planning and control (PPC) during the past decades. For some time past an increasing awareness for innovative technologies in terms of Industry 4.0 can be noticed. Although there are many promising approaches a solely installation of those smart solutions will not maximize the PPC performance. To accelerate the successful digital transformation the cooperation between employee and technology also has to be adapted. The existing processes and organizational structures might be not sufficient to maximize the utilization of technological innovations. This paper presents the key results of an extensive study which was conducted by the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of the RWTH Aachen University to evaluate the current situation and examine the organizational readiness for this digital transformation. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cyber-physical%20production%20system" title="cyber-physical production system">cyber-physical production system</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=digital%20transformation" title=" digital transformation"> digital transformation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=industry%204.0" title=" industry 4.0"> industry 4.0</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=production%20planning%20and%20control" title=" production planning and control"> production planning and control</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/56498/digital-transformation-in-production-planning-and-control-evaluation-of-the-organizational-readiness" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/56498.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">353</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">52</span> Multi-Sensory Coding as Intervention Therapy for ESL Spellers with Auditory Processing Delays: A South African Case-Study</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=A.%20Van%20Staden">A. This paper explored the spelling difficulties of English second language learners with auditory processing delays. This empirical study aims to address these issues by means of an intervention design. Specifically, the objectives are: (a) to develop and implement a multi-sensory spelling program for second language learners with auditory processing difficulties (APD) for a period of 6 months; (b) to assess the efficacy of the multi-sensory spelling program and whether this intervention could significantly improve experimental learners' spelling, phonological awareness, and processing (PA), rapid automatized naming (RAN), working memory (WM), word reading and reading comprehension; and (c) to determine the relationship (or interplay) between these cognitive and linguistic skills (mentioned above), and how they influence spelling development. Forty-four English, second language learners with APD were sampled from one primary school in the Free State province. The learners were randomly assigned to either an experimental (n=22) or control group (n=22). During the implementation of the spelling program, several visual, tactile and kinesthetic exercises, including the utilization of fingerspelling were introduced to support the experimental learners’ (N = 22) spelling development. Post-test results showed the efficacy of the multi-sensory spelling program, with the experimental group who were trained in utilising multi-sensory coding and fingerspelling outperforming learners from the control group on the cognitive-linguistic, spelling and reading measures. The results and efficacy of this multi-sensory spelling program and the utilisation of fingerspelling for hearing second language learners with APD open up innovative perspectives for the prevention and targeted remediation of spelling difficulties. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=English%20second%20language%20spellers" title="English second language spellers">English second language spellers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=auditory%20processing%20delays" title=" auditory processing delays"> auditory processing delays</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=spelling%20difficulties" title=" spelling difficulties"> spelling difficulties</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=multi-sensory%20intervention%20program" title=" multi-sensory intervention program"> multi-sensory intervention program</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/108823/multi-sensory-coding-as-intervention-therapy-for-esl-spellers-with-auditory-processing-delays-a-south-african-case-study" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/108823.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">136</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">51</span> The Educational, Social and Cultural Significance of Boys Choirs</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Van%20Der%20Sandt">Johannes Van Der Sandt</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Worldwide, there are many boys choirs, but the Drakensberg Boys Choir is one of only a few of its kind: selected from a residential boys choir school using choral music as a significant vehicle for holistic education. With ongoing debates as to whether single-gender education is advantageous for boys, and research on the missing males in choirs problem, this presentation‘s purpose is to explore the perceived benefits and values for boys singing in the world-renowned Drakensberg Boys Choir, and to establish educational grounds for the existence of boys choirs. Semi-structured questionnaires were given to choristers, known as Drakies, to ascertain their perceptions of their choir membership. Their experiences are noted in terms of musical, social and behavioral skills gained. The main emerging themes in each category are discussed in order to lay claim to the assumption that boys choirs exist not only to entertain, and nor are their goals purely musical or pedagogical, but that they can be regarded as unique, cultural artifacts that aid boys‘ development into well-equipped and well-rounded young men. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=boys" title="boys">boys</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=choirs" title=" choirs"> choirs</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=choral" title=" choral"> choral</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=education" title=" education"> education</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=skills" title=" skills"> skills</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=values" title=" values"> values</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/60290/the-educational-social-and-cultural-significance-of-boys-choirs" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/60290.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">200</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">50</span> Operation Parameters of Vacuum Cleaned Filters</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Wilhelm%20Hoeflinger">Wilhelm Hoeflinger</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Thomas%20Laminger"> Thomas Laminger</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Wolfslehner"> Johannes Wolfslehner</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> For vacuum cleaned dust filters, used e. g. in textile industry, there exist no calculation methods to determine design parameters (e. g. traverse speed of the nozzle, filter area...). In this work a method to calculate the optimum traverse speed of the nozzle of an industrial-size flat dust filter at a given mean pressure drop and filter face velocity was elaborated. Well-known equations for the design of a cleanable multi-chamber bag-house-filter were modified in order to take into account a continuously regeneration of a dust filter by a nozzle. Thereby, the specific filter medium resistance and the specific cake resistance values are needed which can be derived from filter tests under constant operation conditions. A lab-scale filter test rig was used to derive the specific filter media resistance value and the specific cake resistance value for vacuum cleaned filter operation. The Kauffman model proposes the existence of autocatalytic sets of macromolecules which mutually catalyze reactions leading to each other’s formation. Usually, this model is simulated in one well-stirred pot only, with a continuous inflow of small building blocks, from which larger molecules are created by a set of catalyzed ligation and cleavage reactions. This approach represents the picture of the primordial soup. However, the conditions on the early Earth must have differed geographically, leading to spatially different outcomes whether a specific reaction could be performed or not. Guided by this picture, the Kauffman model is simulated in a large number of containers in parallel, with neighboring containers being connected by diffusion. In each container, only a subset of the overall reaction set can be performed. Under specific conditions, this approach leads to a larger probability for the existence of an autocatalytic metabolism than in the original Kauffman model. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=agglomeration" title="agglomeration">agglomeration</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=autocatalytic%20set" title=" autocatalytic set"> autocatalytic set</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=differential%20equation" title=" differential equation"> differential equation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kauffman%20model" title=" Kauffman model"> Kauffman model</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/182310/kauffman-model-on-a-network-of-containers" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/182310.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">58</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">48</span> Transient Free Laminar Convection in the Vicinity of a Thermal Conductive Vertical Plate</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Anna%20Bykalyuk">Anna Bykalyuk</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fr%C3%A9d%C3%A9ric%20Kuznik"> Frédéric Kuznik</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=K%C3%A9vyn%20Johannes"> Kévyn Johannes</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In this paper, the influence of a vertical plate’s thermal capacity is numerically investigated in order to evaluate the evolution of the thermal boundary layer structure, as well as the convective heat transfer coefficient and the velocity and temperature profiles. This work is the first stage of a holistic research on transient free convection that aims, in the future, to study the natural convection in the vicinity of a vertical plate containing Phase Change Materials (PCM). <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=CFD%20modeling" title="CFD modeling">CFD modeling</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=natural%20convection" title=" natural convection"> natural convection</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=thermal%20conductive%20plate" title=" thermal conductive plate"> thermal conductive plate</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=time-depending%20boundary%20conditions" title=" time-depending boundary conditions"> time-depending boundary conditions</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/1371/transient-free-laminar-convection-in-the-vicinity-of-a-thermal-conductive-vertical-plate" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/1371.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">277</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">47</span> Method for Evaluating the Monetary Value of a Customized Version of the Digital Twin for the Additive Manufacturing</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fabio%20Oettl">Fabio Oettl</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sebastian%20Hoerbrand"> Sebastian Hoerbrand</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tobias%20Wittmeir"> Tobias Wittmeir</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Schilp"> Johannes Schilp</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> By combining the additive manufacturing (AM)- process with digital concepts, like the digital twin (DT) or the downsized and basing concept of the digital part file (DPF), the competitiveness of additive manufacturing is enhanced and new use cases like decentral production are enabled. But in literature, one can´t find any quantitative approach for valuing the usage of a DT or DPF in AM. Out of this fact, such an approach will be developed within this paper in order to further promote or dissuade the usage of these concepts. The focus is set on the production as an early lifecycle phase, which means that the AM-production process gets analyzed regarding the potential advantages of using DPF in AM. These advantages are transferred to a monetary value with this approach. By calculating the costs of the DPF, an overall monetary value is a result. Thereon a tool, based on a simulation environment is constructed, where the algorithms are transformed into a program. The results of applying this tool show that an overall value of 20,81 € for the DPF can be realized for one special use case. For the future application of the DPF there is the recommendation to integrate especially sustainable information because out of this, a higher value of the DPF can be expected. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=additive%20manufacturing" title="additive manufacturing">additive manufacturing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=digital%20concept%20costs" title=" digital concept costs"> digital concept costs</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=digital%20part%20file" title=" digital part file"> digital part file</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=digital%20twin" title=" digital twin"> digital twin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=monetary%20value%20estimation" title=" monetary value estimation"> monetary value estimation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/133143/method-for-evaluating-the-monetary-value-of-a-customized-version-of-the-digital-twin-for-the-additive-manufacturing" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/133143.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">200</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">46</span> Deciphering Chinese Calligraphy as the Architectural Essence of Tao Fong Shan Christian Center in Hong Kong</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chak%20Kwong%20Lau">Chak Kwong Lau</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Many buildings in Hong Kong are graced with enchanting works of Chinese calligraphy. An excellent example is Tao Fong Shan Christian Center founded by a Norwegian missionary, Karl Ludvig Reichelt (1877-1952) in 1930. Adorned with many inspiring works of Chinese calligraphy, the center functions as a place for the study of Christianity where people of different religions can meet to have religious discussions and intellectual exchanges. This paper examines the pivotal role played by Chinese calligraphy in creating a significant context for the center to fulfill her visions and missions. The methodology of this research involves stylistic and textual analyses of works of calligraphy, in particular through an examination and interpretation of their extended meanings in terms of architectural symbology and social and cultural contexts. Findings showed that Chinese calligraphy was effectively used as a powerful vehicle for a purposeful development of contextual Christian spirituality in Hong Kong. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chinese%20calligraphy" title="Chinese calligraphy">Chinese calligraphy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hong%20Kong%20architecture" title=" Hong Kong architecture"> Hong Kong architecture</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hong%20Kong%20calligraphy" title=" Hong Kong calligraphy"> Hong Kong calligraphy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Prip-M%C3%B8ller" title=" Johannes Prip-Møller"> Johannes Prip-Møller</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Karl%20Ludvig%20Reichelt" title=" Karl Ludvig Reichelt"> Karl Ludvig Reichelt</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Norwegian%20missionary" title=" Norwegian missionary"> Norwegian missionary</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tao%20Fong%20Shan%20Christian%20Center" title=" Tao Fong Shan Christian Center"> Tao Fong Shan Christian Center</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=traditional%20Chinese%20architecture" title=" traditional Chinese architecture"> traditional Chinese architecture</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/103051/deciphering-chinese-calligraphy-as-the-architectural-essence-of-tao-fong-shan-christian-center-in-hong-kong" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/103051.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">280</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">45</span> Orthophthalic Polyester Composite Reinforced with Sodium Alginate-Treated Anahaw (Saribus rotundifolius) Fibers</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Terence%20Tumolva">Terence Tumolva</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Kristoff%20Vito"> Johannes Kristoff Vito</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Joanna%20Crystelle%20Ragasa"> Joanna Crystelle Ragasa</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Renz%20Marion%20Dela%20Cruz"> Renz Marion Dela Cruz</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Natural fiber reinforced polymer (NFRP) composites have been the focus of various research projects due to their advantages over synthetic fiber-reinforced composites. For this study, ana haw is used as the fiber source due to its abundance throughout the Philippines. A problem addressed in this study is the need for an environment-friendly method of fiber treatment. The use of sodium alginate to treat fibers was thus investigated. The fibers were immersed in a sodium alginate solution and then in a calcium chloride solution afterwards. The treated fibers were used to reinforce orthophthalic unsaturated polyester (ortho-UP) resin. The mechanical properties were tested using a universal testing machine (UTM), and the fracture surfaces were characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results showed that the sodium alginate treatment had increased the tensile and flexural strength of the composite. The increase in fiber load had also been found to increase the stiffness of the composite. However, sodium alginate treatment did not provide any significant improvement in the wet mechanical properties of the NFRP. The composite is comparable to some commercially available polymeric materials. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=NFRP" title="NFRP">NFRP</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=composite" title=" composite"> composite</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=alginate" title=" alginate"> alginate</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=anahaw" title=" anahaw"> anahaw</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=polymer" title=" polymer"> polymer</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/52227/orthophthalic-polyester-composite-reinforced-with-sodium-alginate-treated-anahaw-saribus-rotundifolius-fibers" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/52227.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">337</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">44</span> Optimization Model for Identification of Assembly Alternatives of Large-Scale, Make-to-Order Products</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Henrik%20Prinzhorn">Henrik Prinzhorn</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Peter%20Nyhuis"> Peter Nyhuis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Wagner"> Johannes Wagner</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Peter%20Burggr%C3%A4f"> Peter Burggräf</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Torben%20Schmitz"> Torben Schmitz</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Christina%20Reuter"> Christina Reuter</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Assembling large-scale products, such as airplanes, locomotives, or wind turbines, involves frequent process interruptions induced by e.g. delayed material deliveries or missing availability of resources. This leads to a negative impact on the logistical performance of a producer of xxl-products. In industrial practice, in case of interruptions, the identification, evaluation and eventually the selection of an alternative order of assembly activities (&lsquo;assembly alternative&rsquo;) leads to an enormous challenge, especially if an optimized logistical decision should be reached. Therefore, in this paper, an innovative, optimization model for the identification of assembly alternatives that addresses the given problem is presented. It describes make-to-order, large-scale product assembly processes as a resource constrained project scheduling (RCPS) problem which follows given restrictions in practice. For the evaluation of the assembly alternative, a cost-based definition of the logistical objectives (delivery reliability, inventory, make-span and workload) is presented. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=assembly%20scheduling" title="assembly scheduling">assembly scheduling</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=large-scale%20products" title=" large-scale products"> large-scale products</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=make-to-order" title=" make-to-order"> make-to-order</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=optimization" title=" optimization"> optimization</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=rescheduling" title=" rescheduling"> rescheduling</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/40012/optimization-model-for-identification-of-assembly-alternatives-of-large-scale-make-to-order-products" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/40012.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">459</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">43</span> Motivation and Self-Concept in Language Learning: An Exploratory Study of English Language Learners</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=A.%20van%20Staden">A. van Staden</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=M.%20M.%20Coetzee"> M. Moreover, despite the fact that a significant percentage of our country's budget is spent on the education sector and that both policy makers and educationalists have emphasized the importance of learning English in this globalized world, the poor overall academic performance and English literacy level of a large number of school leavers are still a major concern. As we move forward in an attempt to comprehend the nuances of English language and literacy development in our country, it is imperative to explore both extrinsic and intrinsic factors that contribute or impede the effective development of English as a second language. In the present study, the researchers set out to investigate how intrinsic factors such as motivation and self-concept contribute to or affect English language learning amongst high school learners in South Africa. Emanating from the above the main research question that guided this research is the following: Is there a significant relationship between high school learners' self-concept, motivation, and English second language performances? In order to investigate this hypothesis, this study utilized quantitative research methodology to investigate the interplay of self-concept and motivation in English language learning. For this purpose, we sampled 201 high school learners from various schools in South Africa. Methods of data gathering inter alia included the following: A biographical questionnaire; the Academic Motivational Scale and the Piers-Harris Self-Concept Scale. Pearson Product Moment Correlation Analyses yielded significant correlations between L2 learners' motivation and their English language proficiency, including demonstrating positive correlations between L2 learners' self-concept and their achievements in English. Accordingly, researchers have argued that the learning context, in which students learn English as a second language, has a crucial influence on students' motivational levels. This emphasizes the important role the teacher has to play in creating learning environments that will enhance L2 learners' motivation and improve their self-concepts. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=motivation" title="motivation">motivation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=self-concept" title=" self-concept"> self-concept</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=language%20learning" title=" language learning"> language learning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=English%20second%20language%20learners%20%28L2%29" title=" English second language learners (L2)"> English second language learners (L2)</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/60763/motivation-and-self-concept-in-language-learning-an-exploratory-study-of-english-language-learners" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/60763.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">268</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">42</span> Parameter Estimation for Contact Tracing in Graph-Based Models</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Augustine%20Okolie">Augustine Okolie</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20M%C3%BCller"> Johannes Müller</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mirjam%20Kretzchmar"> Mirjam Kretzchmar</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> We adopt a maximum-likelihood framework to estimate parameters of a stochastic susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) model with contact tracing on a rooted random tree. Given the number of detectees per index case, our estimator allows to determine the degree distribution of the random tree as well as the tracing probability. Since we do not discover all infectees via contact tracing, this estimation is non-trivial. To keep things simple and stable, we develop an approximation suited for realistic situations (contract tracing probability small, or the probability for the detection of index cases small). In this approximation, the only epidemiological parameter entering the estimator is the basic reproduction number R0. The estimator is tested in a simulation study and applied to covid-19 contact tracing data from India. The simulation study underlines the efficiency of the method. For the empirical covid-19 data, we are able to compare different degree distributions and perform a sensitivity analysis. We find that particularly a power-law and a negative binomial degree distribution meet the data well and that the tracing probability is rather large. The sensitivity analysis shows no strong dependency on the reproduction number. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=stochastic%20SIR%20model%20on%20graph" title="stochastic SIR model on graph">stochastic SIR model on graph</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=contact%20tracing" title=" contact tracing"> contact tracing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=branching%20process" title=" branching process"> branching process</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=parameter%20inference" title=" parameter inference"> parameter inference</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/167983/parameter-estimation-for-contact-tracing-in-graph-based-models" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/167983.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">77</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">41</span> Determination of Economic and Ecological Potential of Bio Hydrogen Generated through Dark Photosynthesis Process</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Full">Johannes Full</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Martin%20Reisinger"> Martin Reisinger</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexander%20Sauer"> Alexander Sauer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Robert%20Miehe"> Robert Miehe</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The use of biogenic residues for the biotechnological production of chemical energy carriers for electricity and heat generation as well as for mobile applications is an important lever for the shift away from fossil fuels towards a carbon dioxide neutral post-fossil future. A multitude of promising biotechnological processes needs, therefore, to be compared against each other. For this purpose, a multi-objective target system and a corresponding methodology for the evaluation of the underlying key figures are presented in this paper, which can serve as a basis for decisionmaking for companies and promotional policy measures. The methodology considers in this paper the economic and ecological potential of bio-hydrogen production using the example of hydrogen production from fruit and milk production waste with the purple bacterium R. rubrum (so-called dark photosynthesis process) for the first time. The substrate used in this cost-effective and scalable process is fructose from waste material and waste deposits. Based on an estimation of the biomass potential of such fructose residues, the new methodology is used to compare different scenarios for the production and usage of bio-hydrogen through the considered process. In conclusion, this paper presents, at the example of the promising dark photosynthesis process, a methodology to evaluate the ecological and economic potential of biotechnological production of bio-hydrogen from residues and waste. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=biofuel" title="biofuel">biofuel</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hydrogen" title=" hydrogen"> hydrogen</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=R.%20rubrum" title=" R. rubrum"> R. rubrum</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bioenergy" title=" bioenergy"> bioenergy</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/109934/determination-of-economic-and-ecological-potential-of-bio-hydrogen-generated-through-dark-photosynthesis-process" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/109934.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">196</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">40</span> Effect of UV/Ozone Treatment on the Adhesion Strength of Polymeric Systems</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marouen%20Hamdi">Marouen Hamdi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20A.%20Poulis"> Johannes A. The experimental tests consist of contact angle measurements, standardized adhesion tests, and spectroscopic and microscopic observations. Also, commonly-used surface free energy models were applied to characterize the wettability of the materials. Preliminary results show that the treatment enhances the wettability of the examined polymers. Also, it considerably improved the adhesion strength of PVC and ABS and shifted their failure modes from adhesive to cohesive, without a significant effect on EPDM. Spectroscopic characterization showed significant oxidation-induced changes in the chemical structures of treated PVC and ABS surfaces. Also, new morphological changes (microcracks, micro-holes, and wrinkles) were observed on these two materials using the SEM. These chemical and morphological changes on treated PVC and ABS promote more reactivity and mechanical interlocking with the adhesive, which explains the improvement in their adhesion strength. After characterizing the adhesion strength of the systems, accelerated ageing tests in controlled environment chambers will be conducted to determine the effect of temperature, moisture, and UV radiation on the performance of the polymeric bonded joints. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=accelerated%20tests" title="accelerated tests">accelerated tests</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=adhesion%20strength" title=" adhesion strength"> adhesion strength</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ageing%20of%20polymers" title=" ageing of polymers"> ageing of polymers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=UV%2Fozone%20treatment" title=" UV/ozone treatment"> UV/ozone treatment</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/110983/effect-of-uvozone-treatment-on-the-adhesion-strength-of-polymeric-systems" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/110983.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">148</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">39</span> The Imagined Scientific Drawing as a Representative of the Content Provided by Emotions to Scientific Rationality</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Den%C3%AD%20Stincer%20G%C3%B3mez">Dení Stincer Gómez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Zuraya%20Monroy%20Nasr"> Zuraya Monroy Nasr</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> From the epistemology of emotions, one of the topics of current reflection is the function that emotions fulfill in the rational processes involved in scientific activity. So far, three functions have been assigned to them: selective, heuristic, and carriers of content. In this last function, it is argued that emotions, like our perceptual organs, contribute relevant content to reasoning, which is then converted into linguistic statements or graphic representations. In this paper, of a qualitative and philosophical nature, arguments are provided for two hypotheses 1) if emotions provide content to the mind, which then translates it into language or representations, then it is important to take up the idea of the Saussurean linguistic sign to understand this process. This sign has two elements: the signified and the signifier. Emotions would provide meanings, and reasoning creates the signifier, and 2) the meanings provided by emotions are properties and qualities of phenomena generally not accessible to the sense organs. These meanings must be imagined, and the imagination is nurtured by the feeling that "maybe this is the way." One way to access the content provided by emotions can be through imagined scientific drawings. The atomic models created since Thomson, the structure of crystals by René Just, the representations of lunar eclipses by Johannes, fractal geometry, and the structure of DNA, among others, have resulted fundamentally from the imagination. These representations, not provided by the sense organs, seem to come from the emotional involvement of scientists in their desire to understand, explain and discover. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=emotions" title="emotions">emotions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=epistemic%20functions%20of%20emotions" title=" epistemic functions of emotions"> epistemic functions of emotions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=scientific%20drawing" title=" scientific drawing"> scientific drawing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=linguistic%20sign" title=" linguistic sign"> linguistic sign</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/162264/the-imagined-scientific-drawing-as-a-representative-of-the-content-provided-by-emotions-to-scientific-rationality" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/162264.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">71</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">38</span> A Framework for Event-Based Monitoring of Business Processes in the Supply Chain Management of Industry 4.0</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Atug">Johannes Atug</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Andreas%20Radke"> Andreas Radke</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mitchell%20Tseng"> Mitchell Tseng</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gunther%20Reinhart"> Gunther Reinhart</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In modern supply chains, large numbers of SKU (Stock-Keeping-Unit) need to be timely managed, and any delays in noticing disruptions of items often limit the ability to defer the impact on customer order fulfillment. However, in supply chains of IoT-connected enterprises, the ERP (Enterprise-Resource-Planning), the MES (Manufacturing-Execution-System) and the SCADA (Supervisory-Control-and-Data-Acquisition) systems generate large amounts of data, which generally glean much earlier notice of deviations in the business process steps. That is, analyzing these streams of data with process mining techniques allows the monitoring of the supply chain business processes and thus identification of items that deviate from the standard order fulfillment process. In this paper, a framework to enable event-based SCM (Supply-Chain-Management) processes including an overview of core enabling technologies are presented, which is based on the RAMI (Reference-Architecture-Model for Industrie 4.0) architecture. The application of this framework in the industry is presented, and implications for SCM in industry 4.0 and further research are outlined. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cyber-physical%20production%20systems" title="cyber-physical production systems">cyber-physical production systems</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=event-based%20monitoring" title=" event-based monitoring"> event-based monitoring</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=supply%20chain%20management" title=" supply chain management"> supply chain management</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=RAMI%20%28Reference-Architecture-Model%20for%20Industrie%204.0%29" title=" RAMI (Reference-Architecture-Model for Industrie 4.0)"> RAMI (Reference-Architecture-Model for Industrie 4.0)</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/75155/a-framework-for-event-based-monitoring-of-business-processes-in-the-supply-chain-management-of-industry-40" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/75155.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">236</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">37</span> Assessment of Ultra-High Cycle Fatigue Behavior of EN-GJL-250 Cast Iron Using Ultrasonic Fatigue Testing Machine</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Saeedeh%20Bakhtiari">Saeedeh Bakhtiari</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Depessemier"> Johannes Depessemier</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Stijn%20Hertel%C3%A9"> Stijn Hertelé</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Wim%20De%20Waele"> Wim De Waele</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> High cycle fatigue comprising up to 10<sup>7</sup> load cycles has been the subject of many studies, and the behavior of many materials was recorded adequately in this regime. However, many applications involve larger numbers of load cycles during the lifetime of machine components. In this ultra-high cycle regime, other failure mechanisms play, and the concept of a fatigue endurance limit (assumed for materials such as steel) is often an oversimplification of reality. When machine component design demands a high geometrical complexity, cast iron grades become interesting candidate materials. Grey cast iron is known for its low cost, high compressive strength, and good damping properties. However, the ultra-high cycle fatigue behavior of cast iron is poorly documented. The current work focuses on the ultra-high cycle fatigue behavior of EN-GJL-250 (GG25) grey cast iron by developing an ultrasonic (20 kHz) fatigue testing system. Moreover, the testing machine is instrumented to measure the temperature and the displacement of&nbsp; the specimen, and to control the temperature. The high resonance frequency allowed to assess the&nbsp; behavior of the cast iron of interest within a matter of days for ultra-high numbers of cycles, and repeat the tests to quantify the natural scatter in fatigue resistance. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=GG25" title="GG25">GG25</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cast%20iron" title=" cast iron"> cast iron</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ultra-high%20cycle%20fatigue" title=" ultra-high cycle fatigue"> ultra-high cycle fatigue</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ultrasonic%20test" title=" ultrasonic test"> ultrasonic test</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/110405/assessment-of-ultra-high-cycle-fatigue-behavior-of-en-gjl-250-cast-iron-using-ultrasonic-fatigue-testing-machine" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/110405.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">176</span> </span> </div> </div> <ul class="pagination"> <li class="page-item disabled"><span class="page-link">&lsaquo;</span></li> <li class="page-item active"><span class="page-link">1</span></li> <li class="page-item"><a class="page-link" href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Van%20Staden&amp;page=2">2</a></li> <li class="page-item"><a class="page-link" href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Van%20Staden&amp;page=3">3</a></li> <li class="page-item"><a class="page-link" href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Van%20Staden&amp;page=2" rel="next">&rsaquo;</a></li> </ul> </div> </main> <footer> <div id="infolinks" class="pt-3 pb-2"> <div class="container"> <div style="background-color:#f5f5f5;" class="p-3"> <div class="row"> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> About <li><a href="https://waset.org/page/support">About Us</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/page/support#legal-information">Legal</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/WASET-16th-foundational-anniversary.pdf">WASET celebrates its 16th foundational anniversary</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Account <li><a href="https://waset.org/profile">My Account</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Explore <li><a href="https://waset.org/disciplines">Disciplines</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/conferences">Conferences</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/conference-programs">Conference Program</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/committees">Committees</a></li> <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org">Publications</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Research <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts">Abstracts</a></li> <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org">Periodicals</a></li> <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org/archive">Archive</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Open Science <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Open-Science-Philosophy.pdf">Open Science Philosophy</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Open-Science-Award.pdf">Open Science Award</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Open-Society-Open-Science-and-Open-Innovation.pdf">Open Innovation</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Postdoctoral-Fellowship-Award.pdf">Postdoctoral Fellowship Award</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Scholarly-Research-Review.pdf">Scholarly Research Review</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Support <li><a href="https://waset.org/page/support">Support</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/profile/messages/create">Contact Us</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/profile/messages/create">Report Abuse</a></li> </ul> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="container text-center"> <hr style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:.3rem;"> <a href="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/" target="_blank" class="text-muted small">Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License</a> <div id="copy" class="mt-2">&copy;
