After previous attempts to create a film version of <i>The Simpsons</i> had failed because of script length and lack of staff, production began in 2001. The script was re-written one hundred times continuing after animation had begun. This meant that "two films' worth" of finished material was cut, including cameos from <a href="/wiki/Isla_Fisher" title="Isla Fisher">Isla Fisher</a>, <a href="/wiki/Minnie_Driver" title="Minnie Driver">Minnie Driver</a>, <a href="/wiki/Erin_Brockovich" title="Erin Brockovich">Erin Brockovich</a>, and <a href="/wiki/Kelsey_Grammer" title="Kelsey Grammer">Kelsey Grammer</a>. In 1985, Brooks contacted Groening with the proposition of working in <a href="/wiki/Animation" title="Animation">animation</a> for the <a href="/wiki/Fox_Broadcasting_Company" title="Fox Broadcasting Company">FOX</a> variety show <i><a href="/wiki/The_Tracey_Ullman_Show" title="The Tracey Ullman Show">The Tracey Ullman Show</a></i>. Originally, Brooks wanted Groening to adapt his <i>Life in Hell</i> characters for the show. Fearing the loss of ownership rights, Groening decided to create something new and came up with a cartoon family, <a href="/wiki/Simpsons_family" class="mw-redirect" title="Simpsons family">the Simpsons</a> and named the members after his own family, except Bart, which was an anagram of the word brat. The shorts would be spun off into their own series: <i>The Simpsons</i>, which has since aired over 400 episodes in 19 seasons. In 1997, Groening got together with <a href="/wiki/David_X._Cohen" title="David X. Cohen">David X. In the <a href="/wiki/Meta-joke" class="mw-redirect" title="Meta-joke">self-referential</a> plot, the family discovers that they are forced to participate in another <i>The Simpsons</i> video game. Similar to the show, the game pokes fun at <a href="/wiki/Popular_culture" title="Popular culture">popular culture</a>, other video games, and Electronic Arts, its publisher. </p><p>The game follows the five Simpson family members—<a href="/wiki/Homer_Simpson" title="Homer Simpson">Homer</a>, <a href="/wiki/Marge_Simpson" title="Marge Simpson">Marge</a> (with <a href="/wiki/Maggie_Simpson" title="Maggie Simpson">Maggie</a>), <a href="/wiki/Bart_Simpson" title="Bart Simpson">Bart</a>, and <a href="/wiki/Lisa_Simpson" title="Lisa Simpson">Lisa</a>—who learn they are part of a video game and are given superpowers to resolve several situations. The Simpson family travels to four scenarios in parodies of other games to collect key cards used to infiltrate their creator's mansion and ultimately to save their predecessors from destruction. </p><p>Video game critics gave the game a mixed reaction. They praised its visuals and writing, which included many parodies of other video games, while they criticized its short length and poor <a href="/wiki/Camera_system" class="mw-redirect" title="Camera system">camera system</a>, which did not always function properly. <i>The Simpsons Game</i> received the Best Game Based on a Movie or TV Show award at the 2007 <a href="/wiki/Spike_Video_Game_Awards" title="Spike Video Game Awards">Spike Video Game Awards</a> and was nominated for Best Video Game Writing at the <a href="/wiki/Writers_Guild_of_America_Awards_2007" class="mw-redirect" title="Writers Guild of America Awards 2007">2007</a> <a href="/wiki/Writers_Guild_of_America_Award" class="mw-redirect" title="Writers Guild of America Award">Writers Guild of America Awards</a>.
