class='blog-card__preview-content'> Clouds of various kinds play a substantial role in a wide variety of atmospheric processes. They are directly linked to the formation of precipitation, and significantly affect the atmospheric energy budget via radiative effects and latent heat. Moreover, knowledge of currently occurring cloud types allows the observer to draw conclusions about the short-term evolution of the state of the atmosphere and the weather. Therefore, a consistent cloud classification scheme has already been introduced almost 100 years ago. In this work, we train an ensemble of identically initialized multi-label residual neural network architectures from scratch with ground-based RGB pictures. Operational human observations, consisting of up to three out of 30 cloud classes per instance, are used as ground truth. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to classify clouds with this methodology into 30 different classes. Class-specific resampling is used to reduce prediction biases due to a highly imbalanced ground truth class distribution. Results indicate that the ensemble mean outperforms the best single member in each cloud class. Still, each single member clearly outperforms both random and climatological predictions. Attributes diagrams indicate underconfidence in heavily augmented classes and very good calibration in all other classes. Autonomy and output consistency are the main advantages of such a trained classifier, hence we consider operational cloud monitoring as main application. Either for consistent cloud class observations or to observe the current state of the weather and its short time evolution with high temporal resolution, e.g. in proximity of solar power plants. loss of the Antarctic ice sheet yields ocean surface freshening, cooling and sea ice expansion, which ought to drive change in the atmosphere. Using the Southern Ocean Freshwater Input from Antarctica (SOFIA) multi-model ensemble, we study the atmospheric response to a 100-year idealized freshwater release of 0.1 Sv. All models simulate consistently surface-intensified tropospheric cooling and lower-stratospheric warming south of 35˚S. Tropospheric cooling is attributed to sea ice expansion and hence albedo increase in winter and a colder sea surface in summer. This cooling yields a downward displacement of the tropopause, reduced stratospheric water vapor content and ultimately warming around 200 hPa. An enhanced southward eddy heat flux explains warming at 10-100 hPa during austral winter. Despite a temporally (and spatially) uniform prescribed freshwater flux, a prominent sea ice seasonal cycle and atmosphere dynamics result in a distinct seasonal pattern in the occurrence and magnitude of the responses. </div> </a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="blog-card"> <a href="/doi/full/10.22541/essoar.173238661.14573770/v1"> <div class="blog-card__image-container"> <img tropical cyclone (TC) density, the Eastern North Pacific (ENP) basin has received relatively little research attention on landfall variability. This study investigates the climatological seasonal cycle and interannual variability of TC landfalls in the ENP. We find that the basin is characterized by a bimodal distribution of landfalls, with peaks in June and September–October. Using a composite analysis of high and low landfall years, we show that this distribution is primarily driven by landfall probability rather than genesis. The absence of landfalls during July is due to enhanced easterlies from the Caribbean Low-Level Jet entering the ENP through gaps in the Americas Cordillera. High landfall years feature enhanced easterly wind reversals from a northward-shifted Intertropical Convergence Zone. These additional steering winds drive hurricanes ashore in the vulnerable region of southwest Mexico. This study provides valuable insights for improving TC landfall forecasts and preparedness in the region. </div> </a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="blog-card"> <div class="blog-card__container"> a range of approaches for encouraging their visitors and communities to not only learn about climate solutions, but to discover their own pathways to sustained, meaningful participation in action. These place-based institutions have unique opportunities to cultivate a culture of hope and action thanks to their local expertise, diverse programming (e.g., field trips, special events, and community science projects), and wide reach (including both in-person and online interactions). These assets enable science centers and museums to communicate about climate solutions in ways that are visible, relatable, and accessible, all attributes that make them more likely to be taken up. One approach that several museums and other groups have piloted is the use of a GIS-based tool to invite members of their community to share the climate actions they’re undertaking and explore those of others. The tool produces open-access climate action maps that showcase real actions taking place in a particular community and provide an opportunity to leverage several evidence-based practices for communicating about climate solutions. By featuring everyday people who live in one’s community, doing actions that are broadly accessible, the maps build a sense of agency, provide inspiration, convey action-oriented norms, and build a sense of belonging in climate solutions. We will describe the ways that this flexible tool and resulting map can be embedded in a range of museum contexts and will discuss the ways that contributing to and exploring the map benefits museums, their visitors, and communities. We will also discuss opportunities for increasing impact through connections with local media, decision-makers, and K-12 school systems. This work demonstrates the role that science museums can play as hubs for collecting and coordinating climate stories and actionable resource centers for increasing community-led participation in climate action. </div> </a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="blog-card"> <div class="blog-card__container"> <div class='blog-card__top-row'> </div> <div class='blog-card__heading-container '> <a href="/doi/full/10.22541/essoar.173238805.52874342/v1"> <div class="blog-card__title"> Climate Action Maps Enable Science Centers and Museums to Make Climate Action Visible... </div> </a> </div> <div class="blog-card__author-container"> <div class="blog-card__author-information"> <div class="blog-card__images-container"> <div class="blog-card__first-avatar"> <img alt="Emily Coren" width="24" height="24" class="user-profile-pic" src="data:image/jpg;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAACAAAAAgCAMAAABEpIrGAAAABGdBTUEAALGP C/xhBQAAACBjSFJNAAB6JgAAgIQAAPoAAACA6AAAdTAAAOpgAAA6mAAAF3Cc ulE8AAABQVBMVEV4hM13g813hM13g8x7h856hs55hc17hs54g812gsxndcdm c8ZmdMZlc8Zqd8dzf8tndcZodcd0gMt6hs2ss+Cpsd+qsd+psN+uteGiqtxx fcpndMalrd2yueJyfspreMj////4+fxsecifqNuQmdVpdsfu7/h+ic+MltSK ldONl9WLldSJk9P7+/2PmdVzgMuTndd5hM3r7fdaacJteslyf8pkcsXO0u2N l9Rca8JWZcC2veSqst/q7PdcasLw8vlwfcqXoNiAi9B1gct1gcz9/f7M0OzU 2O/T1+7e4fKDjtFueslyf8vp6/dSYr9kccXy8/qOmNV9ic90gcvs7vhfbcPV 2e+FkNFhb8RYZ8G0u+Pt7/h9iM+KlNNodsd9iM5jccWstOCVn9ittOCrsuCn r96AjNCxuOJ6hc1lcsYAAAAqBiy2AAAAAWJLR0RqJWKVDgAAAAd0SU1FB+gL FRAXCt+kawsAAAFcSURBVDgR3cGJQhJRGAXgM5zL4GUb5g4YDiW/JIqaoTUu FRqJpSnuu0mWtr7/C+SA49Yb+H14ZKwQQjErhv8wAvbgPkJ1xQnaSiVA3NVH 6GQqnU5nsmDcyWVc4xF3EFrn84X+J8UB3yvx6bOBwbJH3CIMpWuoknsuoeFq nESEMI6MjNbGxieqL2TyZX1KRNeniQhhHHn1OqiUZ2bnZP4N3r6Thqto4Rph HFlYDCqBdt9LkwmtPiwZEBHCtKSrlhXxW8ByYEDcIIyRj59WVj+vrYv4y4Bu tkDcIExbNjYzW7Ot7Lb42qO9s7sHIkIYR/YPBv1me+tQjo4TJ6eSTypauEYY R76cTXRqta87MnJe7ojYbZuIEIbS43z7LqELN04iQmh9edn40Sj+dKZLv4q/ C6j+IW71ETqXupKpkl4z9bfU9oh7CNWVAGkrpWziAUbAHjwUs0IIWVYMj8w/ UhspYbuFGIgAAAAldEVYdGRhdGU6Y3JlYXRlADIwMjQtMTEtMjFUMTY6MjM6 MTArMDA6MDDa93NNAAAAJXRFWHRkYXRlOm1vZGlmeQAyMDI0LTExLTIxVDE2 OjIzOjEwKzAwOjAwq6rL8QAAACB0RVh0c29mdHdhcmUAaHR0cHM6Ly9pbWFn ZW1hZ2ljay5vcme8zx2dAAAAGHRFWHRUaHVtYjo6RG9jdW1lbnQ6OlBhZ2Vz ADGn/7svAAAAGHRFWHRUaHVtYjo6SW1hZ2U6OkhlaWdodAA2MDB63r21AAAA F3RFWHRUaHVtYjo6SW1hZ2U6OldpZHRoADYwMOkv7egAAAAZdEVYdFRodW1i OjpNaW1ldHlwZQBpbWFnZS9wbmc/slZOAAAAF3RFWHRUaHVtYjo6TVRpbWUA MTczMjIwNjE5MLTHUkMAAAATdEVYdFRodW1iOjpTaXplADE1MDE2QkL55e6P AAAAPXRFWHRUaHVtYjo6VVJJAGZpbGU6Ly90bXAvbGV0dGVyX2F2YXRhcnMv Mi9FQy8xMjBfMTMyXzIwNS82MDAucG5nPknfbQAAAABJRU5ErkJggg== " /> </div> <div class="blog-card__second-avatar"> </div> </div> <div> <div class="blog-card__authors-text"> <div class="blog-card-author-list" style="width: 100%;"> <a href="/users/536851"><p class="blog-card__owner">Emily Coren</p></a> <p class='blog-card__remaining-text'>and 4 more</p> </div> </div> <time datetime="2024-11-23" class="blog-card__date">November 23, 2024</time> </div> </div> </div> <div class='blog-card__preview-content-container'> <a href="/doi/full/10.22541/essoar.173238805.52874342/v1"> <div class='blog-card__preview-content'> Science centers and museums are increasingly exploring a range of approaches for encouraging their visitors and communities to not only learn about climate solutions but also to discover their own pathways to sustained, meaningful participation in action. These institutions have unique opportunities to cultivate a culture of hope and action thanks to their local expertise, diverse programming (e.g., field trips, special events, and community science projects), and wide reach (including both in-person and online interactions). These assets enable science centers and museums to communicate about climate solutions in ways that are visible, relatable, and accessible, all attributes that make them more likely to be taken up. One approach that several museums and other groups have piloted is the use of a GIS-based tool to invite members of their community to share the climate actions they&#39;re undertaking and explore those of others. The tool produces open-access climate action maps that showcase real actions taking place in a particular community and provide an opportunity to leverage several evidence-based practices for communicating about climate solutions. By featuring everyday people who live in one&#39;s community, doing actions that are broadly accessible, the maps build a sense of agency, provide inspiration, convey action-oriented norms, and build a sense of belonging in climate solutions. regions, we investigate source characteristics of shallow very low frequency earthquakes (VLFEs) southeast off the Kii Peninsula in the Nankai subduction zone. VLFEs are a kind of slow earthquakes and are clearly observed at frequencies below 0.1 Hz. A non-linear inversion technique for moment rate function estimation and the permanent ocean-bottom seismometer network provided us with precise locations and detailed kinematic source characteristics of shallow VLFEs. The high activity of shallow VLFEs around the western edge of the subducted Paleo-Zenisu ridge is similar to previous studies. A notable trend change in the along-dip dependency of shallow VLFE moment rates was found. Along the profile west side of the Paleo-Zenisu ridge, moment rates of shallow VLFEs increase with reaching the megathrust zone. Small-scale topographic fluctuations of the subducted oceanic plate exist along this profile, but large-scale seamount subduction has not been identified even from dense seismic surveys. Similar tendencies have been reported in tectonic tremors in the Nankai and Cascadia subduction zones. On the other hand, the opposite trend appeared along the profile with the Paleo-Zenisu ridge. Small shallow VLFEs were dominant near the summit of the Paleo-Zenisu ridge. Fracture networks or stress fields due to seamount subduction possibly impede large shallow VLFEs around the subducted seamount. Our results suggest that the large-scale heterogeneity of the upper surface of the subducted oceanic plate could control source characteristics of shallow slow earthquakes. </div> </a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="blog-card"> <div class="blog-card__container"> <div class='blog-card__top-row'> </div> <div class='blog-card__heading-container '> <a href="/doi/full/10.22541/essoar.173204240.08166674/v1"> <div class="blog-card__title"> Extreme precipitation depiction in convection-permitting Earth System Models within t... </div> </a> </div> <div class="blog-card__author-container"> <div class="blog-card__author-information"> <div class="blog-card__images-container"> <div class="blog-card__first-avatar"> <img alt="Jonathan Wille" width="24" height="24" class="user-profile-pic" src="data:image/jpg;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAACAAAAAgCAMAAABEpIrGAAAABGdBTUEAALGP C/xhBQAAACBjSFJNAAB6JgAAgIQAAPoAAACA6AAAdTAAAOpgAAA6mAAAF3Cc ulE8AAABklBMVEVSvIlRvIlRu4hRvIhVvYtTvIpUvIpWvYtTvIlOuoZCtX5K uIM/tHxEtn9Ht4FAtXxKuYM9s3pLuYR5y6RgwZOM0rB4yqNJuINtxpuI0a5K uYRhwpOT1bVjwpVBtX3////C59UwrnL+/v4+tHvr9/FiwpM6sni95dJ2yqJC tn5BtX50yaDA5tQdp2XV7uJdwJBav46N0rHh8+pNuoXB59UfqGae2byAzqgs rW+CzqrL6tszsHTn9e47s3korGxxyJ6q3sUdp2TE6Nfy+vaz4csyr3NpxZms 38Y4sndWvYy+5tNQu4jU7uIgqGdnxJdGt4CG0Kx6y6R1yaG85dE5snjj9OxE toCT1bY3sXaj28BIuIJHuIJYvo1Dtn88s3qv4MlfwZIurnD6/fvS7eD2+/l8 zKWx4cqBzqn5/Prx+fa34842sXZyyJ7n9e/Z8OVMuYVbv4+/5tN3yqKP07O4 4849tHvt+PODz6pQu4doxJhFt4BUvYqb2Luc2Lt4yqJPuodGt4F+zaek3MGa 2LpDtn4AAABBfIuuAAAAAWJLR0SFFddq5wAAAAd0SU1FB+gLFRAXGVsaKtUA AAGSSURBVDgR3cGJegtRAAXgc8/cSSaVJjoVpZhThrSRWIMqYi8ZtbWIKol9 X2sNtfPgJlu/1iP0/7ESGbQYxAz+xw4wBsYcLENYF9YSTFiQbtIjliJSfauY 7gfdTJb0Vg/4Hh0sIlLJwTV+bu1QIrNuvY/hDRs3+R7RY2iDQY1s1pYswq3a 5udHNVawNOgytNuLKu3YqV3Z3dKeMNyr4bJH9BjaoKh9+w9o/OCEdOhwSkcq LogukjYoqnT0mI6fOHnqtCbP6Gw1ooMOxmxQ1LnJKZ2/oJGLunRZ02lLgw56 1rPBjK5cDa+ppuuzmr4hO+QSbSTmqjdv1YsabVRuK6c7d++V7iskiBZDW5h4 8LBSHdOjgfpjPXnaP/tMKj2PSLQY2voLvZyrvdJ48PqNNF+pvZXeNZJ00EYk Ku8Vm//gIvyoT+nmlPT5ywLRRTQbM1+/fW/8gPfz1++FspvJ/Sk3QfQQbiGf 73NBen/zKRDpRhN0sIiwUWRBgDYCQRuBWIptABgDGMNyxnEMWoxBzBisKP8A ZcQ5jXyb9esAAAAldEVYdGRhdGU6Y3JlYXRlADIwMjQtMTEtMjFUMTY6MjM6 MjQrMDA6MDCgN1C9AAAAJXRFWHRkYXRlOm1vZGlmeQAyMDI0LTExLTIxVDE2 OjIzOjI0KzAwOjAw0WroAQAAACB0RVh0c29mdHdhcmUAaHR0cHM6Ly9pbWFn ZW1hZ2ljay5vcme8zx2dAAAAGHRFWHRUaHVtYjo6RG9jdW1lbnQ6OlBhZ2Vz ADGn/7svAAAAGHRFWHRUaHVtYjo6SW1hZ2U6OkhlaWdodAA2MDB63r21AAAA F3RFWHRUaHVtYjo6SW1hZ2U6OldpZHRoADYwMOkv7egAAAAZdEVYdFRodW1i OjpNaW1ldHlwZQBpbWFnZS9wbmc/slZOAAAAF3RFWHRUaHVtYjo6TVRpbWUA MTczMjIwNjIwNGAuk0oAAAATdEVYdFRodW1iOjpTaXplADIwMzM4QkJ/9/rw AAAAPHRFWHRUaHVtYjo6VVJJAGZpbGU6Ly90bXAvbGV0dGVyX2F2YXRhcnMv Mi9KVy84Ml8xODhfMTM3LzYwMC5wbmfuZ4NwAAAAAElFTkSuQmCC " /> </div> <div class="blog-card__second-avatar"> <img alt="Rebekka Koch" width="24" height="24" class="user-profile-pic" src="data:image/jpg;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAACAAAAAgCAMAAABEpIrGAAAABGdBTUEAALGP C/xhBQAAACBjSFJNAAB6JgAAgIQAAPoAAACA6AAAdTAAAOpgAAA6mAAAF3Cc ulE8AAABa1BMVEWPpK+OpK+Oo66Oo6+QpK+SprGRprGRpbCQpbCRprCJn6p/ l6OAmKSAl6SBmKWFnKiNoq2DmqaCmaafsbrBzdO4xcy6x862xMuhs7yEm6eM oq2xwMequsKKn6uLoKyJn6uywMiNoq69ydD///+ktb72+PmCmaV9laLl6uzU 3OC3xMvAzNKUqLKbrbf+/v7v8vR6k6DN19vY3+N5kp+zwsl4kp90jpvZ4OSc r7j09vduiZeMoa23xcyzwclzjZvd5OeXq7Xj6OuVqbP5+vuHnanCztShsrvK 1Nnv8vN/l6Tz9favvsZ3kZ7f5eiGnaj8/f2LoazEz9WMoazL1Nl4kZ62w8rh 5umywch2kJ19lqLs7/GCmqZ+lqPm6u25xs2Sp7Gmt8Dk6ezu8fODmqePo6+7 x86Tp7Lo7O+tvMSBmaX29/j4+vqesLnJ09iInqqarberusOGnKi1wsq0wsnI 0tiKoKt+lqKQpa8AAABCEHHmAAAAAWJLR0R41tvkRgAAAAd0SU1FB+gLFRAX DtjJrxIAAAF0SURBVDgR5cHpYgtRAAXgc4+ZO5PrSjKtSQkaHBLSVBBLSe1b bUGVKrGW2loU5fWlkon+8gB8H/4xxuAvmAF7sIk92IhBaEMbgUQUE0QuAjFE wm32W/KFYkQmBRDFkYQgMgzc6Na0NLbNbUd5x85d8Xhl91iwB0SfofV79du+ PLW/GtcO6GASg+gztL6uicZkXYcKTs3k8BEdbRHEgKH1qY4dL544qamqTp1O 1ay2AyJjaP20zrTGz57T+UQXLupS+XJEDBlan+pK4+o1zVxv68aMbt5qEH8Y Wl/SutvlDqU70t1KTAwZWp/q3mxJ9+cwK40+0MNaTCJjaP205h8tPNbkk7Ka re5TPas9JzKG1teVFjov9HKurFeLDlK4GPE1+gytf6OSX1p4q3fv9SG/1J3X x3YRxAADt7yy7HKfPq98WZ346oDVb9+n1kAMkHBdBwaVHx34BARGumsgMcQg DAj+DGPaiCByIYgNuA4cANiD/8kv8OQw4lOVTxcAAAAldEVYdGRhdGU6Y3Jl YXRlADIwMjQtMTEtMjFUMTY6MjM6MTQrMDA6MDAuuFdeAAAAJXRFWHRkYXRl Om1vZGlmeQAyMDI0LTExLTIxVDE2OjIzOjE0KzAwOjAwX+Xv4gAAACB0RVh0 c29mdHdhcmUAaHR0cHM6Ly9pbWFnZW1hZ2ljay5vcme8zx2dAAAAGHRFWHRU aHVtYjo6RG9jdW1lbnQ6OlBhZ2VzADGn/7svAAAAGHRFWHRUaHVtYjo6SW1h Z2U6OkhlaWdodAA2MDB63r21AAAAF3RFWHRUaHVtYjo6SW1hZ2U6OldpZHRo ADYwMOkv7egAAAAZdEVYdFRodW1iOjpNaW1ldHlwZQBpbWFnZS9wbmc/slZO AAAAF3RFWHRUaHVtYjo6TVRpbWUAMTczMjIwNjE5NLOqlloAAAATdEVYdFRo dW1iOjpTaXplADE4MDk5QkKLk5KDAAAAPXRFWHRUaHVtYjo6VVJJAGZpbGU6 Ly90bXAvbGV0dGVyX2F2YXRhcnMvMi9SSy8xNDNfMTY0XzE3NS82MDAucG5n 1QuJ0wAAAABJRU5ErkJggg== " /> </div> </div> <div> <div class="blog-card__authors-text"> <div class="blog-card-author-list" style="width: 100%;"> <a href="/users/602812"><p class="blog-card__owner">Jonathan D. We here evaluate two fully-coupled convection-permitting Earth System Models for their ability to resolve mesoscale extreme weather events. Using the Integrated Forecasting System (IFS) and Icosahedral Nonhydrostatic Weather and Climate Model (ICON) within the Next Generation Earth Modelling Systems (nextGEMS) project, we evaluate their depiction of extreme precipitation with a focus on the Mediterranean region through a comparison with high resolution reanalysis, gridded observations, a regional climate model, and a large-ensemble lower-resolution climate model. The results are then compared at a coarser resolution globally with CESM2. For dry extremes, we find that the higher resolution and hybrid/explicit representation of convection of the nextGEMS models improve the representation of dry hour frequency and alleviates the drizzle bias observed in CMIP6 models. The explicit representation of convection in ICON helps create realistic dry spell lengths over land, but also generates overly intense convective precipitation. Generally, the nextGEMS models concentrate dry spells into limited frequency yet overly long periods. For wet extremes, the nextGEMS models properly high intensities of heavy precipitation, aside from overestimation in ICON over mountainous terrain. The models appear capable of resolving extreme weather systems like medicanes and tropical cyclones making them useful for extreme weather climatology studies. Overall, the depiction of wet and dry precipitation extremes in the Mediterranean region are representative of the nextGEMS’ models performance across the global mid-latitudes demonstrating the models’ value in simulating extreme weather systems. </div> </a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="blog-card"> <div class="blog-card__container"> <div class='blog-card__top-row'> </div> <div Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) to resolve smaller scales in urban areas of a coastal megacity Chennai in India, which are crucial for accurately modelling Urban Induced Turbulence (UIT) and Urban Heat Island (UHI) effects. Unlike physics-based ensemble (PBE) models in kilometre-scale simulations, LES captures fine-scale atmospheric dynamics, offering enhanced resolution to simulate localized turbulence and heat flux variations. With a resolution of 200 m, Weather Research Forecasting (WRF) LES simulation can convincingly resolve a higher urban heat flux, friction velocity, surface wind speeds, and moisture transport over urban areas. These factors are found to play a critical role in intensifying extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall, especially in the downwind regions of coastal megacities like Chennai. This phenomenon is driven by LES-resolved interaction between the urban heat island effect and the prevailing winds. </div> </a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="blog-card"> <a class='blog-card__preview-content'> Clear air turbulence (CAT) is a safety threat within the aviation sector and is projected to worsen under global warming. Stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI) is a climate intervention strategy that aims to ameliorate climate change by artificially cooling Earth. Climate model simulations have found a side-effect of SAI would be a strengthening of the positive phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). This links to a stronger North Atlantic jet stream and suggests enhanced CAT in the region. Here, we analyse simulations from the UKESM1 climate model to evaluate the impact of a realistic SAI application on winter-time trans-Atlantic CAT. We find a 23 % decrease in severe CAT frequency under SAI when compared to a baseline high-end global warming scenario. Our results indicate that the amelioration of global warming under SAI has a more dominant impact on CAT over the North Atlantic than residual impacts to the NAO. </div> </a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="blog-card"> <div class="blog-card__container"> <div class='blog-card__top-row'> </div> <div class='blog-card__heading-container '> <a href="/doi/full/10.22541/essoar.173204199.97113482/v1"> <div class="blog-card__title"> Role of forest biomass change in shaping future land use and land cover change </div> </a> </div> <div class="blog-card__author-container"> <div class="blog-card__author-information"> <div class="blog-card__images-container"> <div class="blog-card__first-avatar"> <img alt="Meng Luo" width="24" height="24" class="user-profile-pic" src="data:image/jpg;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAACAAAAAgCAMAAABEpIrGAAAABGdBTUEAALGP C/xhBQAAACBjSFJNAAB6JgAAgIQAAPoAAACA6AAAdTAAAOpgAAA6mAAAF3Cc ulE8AAABLFBMVEX+2hD+2g/+2Q/+2hL+2hX+2hT+2hb+2hH92AX91QD91gD9 2Q/92Q7+2hP92Ab+3Sf+5mD+40792Af92Q392Qn+5FD+5l/+3in91wD+3Sj+ 52r+3Sb+6XP////+3zT+4kT+6nj90AD+6G7+6Gr+8J791AD+8q7+6W/+52b+ 6G3+++X91wL92Qz92Aj+98/+6Gz+52f+5Vf+6XT+6XH+6Gv+2xv+/vr++Nf+ ++n++dr+4kn+52j+3zX+6n391wP91wH+5Vn+6G/+5Vz+52n+2xr+/O/++d7+ +dn9zwD+5Vv90gD92AL92Qv+52X+6Gn+6nr+2xj+3zD+4Dj90wD+6XL+6nf+ 4UD92AP+7Yv+5V3+5FH+3zL+6nv+6Xb+3B392AT92An+2xf+2xYAAACEUdKk AAAAAWJLR0RjXL4tqgAAAAd0SU1FB+gLFRAXDUHA/qgAAAGISURBVDgR3cGL YgtRFAXQfc7N3MmZ20RVEWSrmzEIrUkoSqJUvR8lXq1ntP//EZLRVPmEroUj RQQVEQCC/4lOYEInRFUF/1JXS6CAIqk5dd4pDhNN65YFqGIus3qjbs1UBX9p 2jw2f3xhDjixePLU6daZs+eaqeKABG9t8nzWSLIl8kJss2M+CGYkeMvJi0Ut KS6Rl2POK+aDYEaCty6v8try4gqvsx1L9swHwYwEbx122c8s5w3ejCV75oNg RoK3Vd66faewtbv3WMaSPfNBMCPB24DD+1z3nF9iGUv2zAdV7JPgrcf+Az7c oD1iGUtu2uNGAsUfErz1OIhPnq49e56zjKt88fJVK3sNRUWCtzfM4xbZj1vM Y86374aj941lKKYkeOty44MjF4oOP8ZPrHxuJSqYUrc92hnVW1++tpqjnW/Z 8Psgzzd//FxJFRXRdFyM0zTLXDouthvrhU39SlWwT92uU60lqm7XBbfnJ/ZS xQHRoKITokFVQ0VxmAAQASAApIIj5DdoayrCJRPDNwAAACV0RVh0ZGF0ZTpj cmVhdGUAMjAyNC0xMS0yMVQxNjoyMzoxMyswMDowMOsfadAAAAAldEVYdGRh dGU6bW9kaWZ5ADIwMjQtMTEtMjFUMTY6MjM6MTMrMDA6MDCaQtFsAAAAIHRF WHRzb2Z0d2FyZQBodHRwczovL2ltYWdlbWFnaWNrLm9yZ7zPHZ0AAAAYdEVY dFRodW1iOjpEb2N1bWVudDo6UGFnZXMAMaf/uy8AAAAYdEVYdFRodW1iOjpJ bWFnZTo6SGVpZ2h0ADYwMHrevbUAAAAXdEVYdFRodW1iOjpJbWFnZTo6V2lk dGgANjAw6S/t6AAAABl0RVh0VGh1bWI6Ok1pbWV0eXBlAGltYWdlL3BuZz+y Vk4AAAAXdEVYdFRodW1iOjpNVGltZQAxNzMyMjA2MTkzLc4D+QAAABN0RVh0 VGh1bWI6OlNpemUAMTE3OTlCQh68H1sAAAA8dEVYdFRodW1iOjpVUkkAZmls ZTovL3RtcC9sZXR0ZXJfYXZhdGFycy8yL01MLzI1NF8yMThfMTYvNjAwLnBu Z7OwW6kAAAAASUVORK5CYII= " /> </div> <div class="blog-card__second-avatar"> </div> </div> <div> <div class="blog-card__authors-text"> <div class="blog-card-author-list" style="width: 100%;"> <a href="/users/596150"><p class="blog-card__owner">Meng Luo</p></a> <p class='blog-card__remaining-text'>and 9 more</p> </div> </div> <time datetime="2024-11-19" class="blog-card__date">November 19, 2024</time> </div> </div> </div> <div class='blog-card__preview-content-container'> <a href="/doi/full/10.22541/essoar.173204199.97113482/v1"> <div class='blog-card__preview-content'> Forest biomass changes influence the forest area required to meet the demand for timber and carbon storage, and thus land use and land cover change (LULCC). The worldwide impacts of global change (e.g., climate change, CO2 fertilization, nitrogen deposition) on forest biomass have been widely recognized and examined, yet are usually ignored by existing LULCC projections. This study explores the role of forest biomass change driven by global change in future global LULCC projections and investigates the underlying drivers. We incorporated the global change impacts on forest biomass from a land surface model driven by the projections from two Earth system models (ESMs) under three Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP) scenarios (SSP126, SSP370, and SSP585) into an integrated assessment model, the Global Change Analysis Model. Considering forest biomass change decreases the projected expansion of managed forests and managed pastures, reduces the loss of unmanaged pastures and unmanaged forests, and provides more areas for cropland. The relative decrease in managed forest is-4.0%,-21.7% and-31.9%, respectively under SSP126, SSP370, and SSP585 in 2100 if forest biomass change is considered. CO2 fertilization is the dominant driver of increasing forest biomass and thus LULCC, compared to the change in climate and nitrogen deposition under SSP585. Using climate forcing data from two ESMs leads to similar impacts of forest biomass change on LULCC in terms of sign and trend but different magnitudes. However, standardized methods for empirical resolution validation have not been widely adopted across LiDAR applications. While theoretical models of idealized LiDAR sampling resolution can be used to describe topographical resolution, misrepresented or unknown behaviors in an instrument, platform, or environment can degrade expected performance or introduce georeferencing inaccuracies. Furthermore, bathymetric resolution is strongly dependent on water surface and column conditions. Thus, only empirical methods for evaluating resolution will provide reliable estimates for both topographic and bathymetric surveys. Presented is an extension of standard modulation transfer function (MTF) methods used by passive imaging systems applied to high-resolution scanning LiDAR. Compact retroreflectors characterized as point and line sources are employed to empirically assess effective LiDAR system resolution through MTF analysis in topographic and bathymetric scenes. These targets enable MTF analyses using range-height measurements without reliance on intensity data, promoting widespread applicability among LiDAR systems. Empirical MTFs calculated using these targets are compared against theory-derived counterparts as empirical measurements elucidate influences by elements that are unknown or difficult to model. Simulated point cloud data were incorporated into theoretical MTF descriptions to better represent empirically-derived topographic MTFs, revealing mirror pointing uncertainties in the across-track axis. Similarly, theoretical bathymetric MTFs augmented with simulated, subaqueous data enabled water surface slope estimation using empirical measurements of submerged retroreflector targets, where rough water surfaces strongly influenced beam steering and the corresponding point spread MTFs. </div> </a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="blog-card"> <div class="blog-card__container"> <div (RL) with idealised climate models to address key parameterisation challenges in climate science. Current climate models rely on complex mathematical parameterisations to represent sub-grid scale processes, which can introduce substantial uncertainties. RL offers capabilities to enhance these parameterisation schemes, including direct interaction, handling sparse or delayed feedback, continuous online learning, and long-term optimisation. We evaluate the performance of eight RL algorithms on two idealised environments: one for temperature bias correction, another for radiative-convective equilibrium (RCE) imitating real-world computational constraints. Results show different RL approaches excel in different climate scenarios with exploration algorithms performing better in bias correction, while exploitation algorithms proving more effective for RCE. These findings support the potential of RL-based parameterisation schemes to be integrated into global climate models, improving accuracy and efficiency in capturing complex climate dynamics. Overall, this work represents an important first step towards leveraging RL to enhance climate model accuracy, critical for improving climate understanding and predictions.
