This event is primarily recorded in the Book of Exodus, which is the second book of the Bible, and it holds significant theological and historical importance within the Judeo-Christian tradition.<br><br><b>Historical Context</b><br><br>The Israelites, descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, had settled in Egypt during a time of famine, as recounted in the latter chapters of Genesis. Over time, they became enslaved by the Egyptians, who were threatened by their growing numbers. The Pharaoh of Egypt subjected them to harsh labor, and their cries for deliverance reached God, who remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (<a href="/exodus/2-24.htm">Exodus 2:24</a>).<br><br><b>Moses: The Chosen Deliverer</b><br><br>Moses, a Hebrew by birth, was raised in Pharaoh's household but fled to Midian after killing an Egyptian who was beating a Hebrew slave. In Midian, God appeared to Moses in a burning bush and commissioned him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. God revealed His name to Moses as "I AM WHO I AM" (<a href="/exodus/3-14.htm">Exodus 3:14</a>), signifying His eternal and self-existent nature.<br><br><b>The Ten Plagues</b><br><br>Moses, along with his brother Aaron, confronted Pharaoh with God's demand: "Let My people go, so that they may worship Me" (<a href="/exodus/7-16.htm">Exodus 7:16</a>). Pharaoh's repeated refusals led to a series of ten plagues that demonstrated God's power over the Egyptian gods and Pharaoh himself. These plagues included turning the Nile River into blood, infestations of frogs and locusts, and culminated in the death of the firstborn in Egypt, which finally compelled Pharaoh to release the Israelites.<br><br><b>The Passover</b><br><br>The final plague, the death of the firstborn, was preceded by the institution of the Passover. God instructed the Israelites to sacrifice a lamb and mark their doorposts with its blood, so the angel of death would "pass over" their homes (<a href="/exodus/12-13.htm">Exodus 12:13</a>). This event became a lasting ordinance for the Israelites, commemorating their deliverance and God's protection.<br><br><b>The Crossing of the Red Sea</b><br><br>After their release, the Israelites journeyed towards the Promised Land. Pharaoh, however, pursued them with his army. At the Red Sea, God miraculously parted the waters, allowing the Israelites to cross on dry ground. When the Egyptians followed, the waters returned, drowning Pharaoh's army (<a href="/exodus/14-21.htm">Exodus 14:21-28</a>). This miraculous deliverance is celebrated in the Song of the Sea, sung by Moses and the Israelites (Exodus 15).<br><br><b>The Wilderness Journey</b><br><br>Following the crossing of the Red Sea, the Israelites began their journey through the wilderness. Despite their frequent complaints and lack of faith, God provided for them with manna, quail, and water from a rock. At Mount Sinai, God established a covenant with the Israelites, giving them the Ten Commandments and other laws to guide their relationship with Him and with each other (Exodus 20).<br><br><b>Theological Significance</b><br><br>The Exodus event is a powerful demonstration of God's sovereignty, faithfulness, and redemptive power. It serves as a paradigm of salvation, illustrating God's ability to deliver His people from bondage and lead them to freedom. The themes of covenant, law, and divine presence established during the Exodus continue to resonate throughout the biblical narrative, foreshadowing the ultimate deliverance through Jesus Christ.</div></div><div id="centbox"><div class="padcent"><a name="sub" id="sub"></a><div class="vheading2">Subtopics</div><p class="pspc"><a href="/topical/e/exodus.htm">Exodus</a></p><p class="pspc"><a href="/topical/naves/e/exodus_of_early_tribes.htm">Exodus of Early Tribes</a></p><a name="rel" id="rel"></a><div class="vheading2">Related Terms</div><p class="pspc2"><a href="/topical/u/usury.htm">Usury (17 Occurrences)</a></p><p class="pspc2"><a href="/topical/e/exorcism.htm">Exorcism</a></p><p class="pspc2"><a href="/topical/u/usurer.htm">Usurer (2 Occurrences)</a></p><p class="pspc2"><a href="/topical/u/usurious.htm">Usurious (1 Occurrence)</a></p><p class="pspc2"><a href="/topical/u/unreasonable.htm">Unreasonable (3 Occurrences)</a></p><p class="pspc2"><a href="/topical/r/rapacity.htm">Rapacity (2 Occurrences)</a></p><p class="pspc2"><a href="/topical/b/banking.htm">Banking</a></p><p class="pspc2"><a href="/topical/a/arrogant.htm">Arrogant (60 Occurrences)</a></p><p class="pspc2"><a href="/topical/a/arrogance.htm">Arrogance (30 Occurrences)</a></p><p class="pspc2"><a href="/topical/s/shave.htm">Shave (19 Occurrences)</a></p><p class="pspc2"><a href="/topical/b/bank.htm">Bank (28 Occurrences)</a></p><p class="pspc2"><a href="/topical/e/exodus.htm">Exodus (2 Occurrences)</a></div></div></td></tr></table></div><div id="left"><a href="/topical/e/exodus_17_-6.htm" onmouseover='lft.src="/leftgif.png"' onmouseout='lft.src="/left.png"' title="Exodus 17 -6"><img src="/left.png" name="lft" border="0" alt="Exodus 17 -6" /></a></div><div id="right"><a href="/topical/e/exodus_from_egypt.htm" onmouseover='rght.src="/rightgif.png"' onmouseout='rght.src="/right.png"' title="Exodus from Egypt"><img src="/right.png" name="rght" border="0" alt="Exodus from Egypt" /></a></div><div id="botleft"><a href="#" onmouseover='botleft.src="/botleftgif.png"' onmouseout='botleft.src="/botleft.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botleft.png" name="botleft" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="botright"><a href="#" onmouseover='botright.src="/botrightgif.png"' onmouseout='botright.src="/botright.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botright.png" name="botright" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div> <div id="mdd"><div align="center"><div class="bot2"><table align="center" width="100%"><tr><td><div align="center"><script id="3d27ed63fc4348d5b062c4527ae09445"> (new Image()).src = 'https://capi.connatix.com/tr/si?token=51ce25d5-1a8c-424a-8695-4bd48c750f35&cid=3a9f82d0-4344-4f8d-ac0c-e1a0eb43a405'; </script> <script id="b817b7107f1d4a7997da1b3c33457e03"> (new Image()).src = 'https://capi.connatix.com/tr/si?token=cb0edd8b-b416-47eb-8c6d-3cc96561f7e8&cid=3a9f82d0-4344-4f8d-ac0c-e1a0eb43a405'; </script><br /><br /> <!-- /1078254/BH-728x90-ATF --> <div id='div-gpt-ad-1529103594582-2'> </div><br /><br /> <!-- /1078254/BH-300x250-ATF --> <div id='div-gpt-ad-1529103594582-0' style='max-width: 300px;'> </div><br /><br /> <!-- /1078254/BH-728x90-BTF --> <div id='div-gpt-ad-1529103594582-3'> </div><br /><br /> <!-- /1078254/BH-300x250-BTF --> <div id='div-gpt-ad-1529103594582-1' style='max-width: 300px;'> </div><br /><br /> <!-- /1078254/BH-728x90-BTF2 --> <div align="center" id='div-gpt-ad-1531425649696-0'> </div><br /><br /> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;width:200px;height:200px" data-ad-client="ca-pub-3753401421161123" data-ad-slot="3592799687"></ins> <script> (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); </script></div></td></tr></table></div></div></div> <br /><br /> <div align="center"> <div id="bot"><iframe width="100%" height="1500" scrolling="no" src="/botmenubhnew2.htm" frameborder="0"></iframe></div></td></tr></table></div></body></html>
