I’m <strong>Khürt Williams</strong>, and <em>Island in the Net</em> has been my digital home since <strong>2003</strong>. I live in <strong>Montgomery Township, New Jersey</strong>, with my wife, <strong>Bhavna</strong>. By day, I work as a <strong>Lead Cybersecurity Architect</strong>, but by life, I’m a <strong>photographer, writer, and Formula 1 craft beer enthusiast</strong>.</p> <p>This blog is where I share my thoughts on the things that matter to me—<strong>photography, hiking, craft beer, and the occasional deep dive into tech and cybersecurity</strong>. It’s personal, informal, and always evolving.</p> <h2>The Longer, More Rambling Version</h2> <h3>A Bit of History</h3> <p>I was born in <strong>1966</strong> in <strong>Saint Vincent and the Grenadines</strong>, back when it was still a <strong>British Overseas Territory</strong>. Thanks to my dad’s career in banking, I spent my pre-University years moving between <strong>Saint Lucia, Barbados, Antigua & Barbuda, and Saint Kitts and Nevis</strong> before settling in <strong>Saint Vincent</strong>. In <strong>1986</strong>, my family <strong>emigrated to Flushing, Queens</strong>, where I attended university and later became a <strong>U.S. citizen in 1992</strong>.</p> <p>While I don’t feel tied to any single island, I have a <strong>soft spot for Bequia and Antigua</strong>.</p> <h3>Photography: Seeing the World Through a Lens</h3> <p>I’ve been fascinated by photography since <strong>1987</strong>, when I took a <strong>fine art photography</strong> course at Drew University. My first camera was a <strong>Pentax P3</strong>, and I shot mostly <strong>Kodachrome, Ilford HP5, and Tri-X Pan film</strong>, developing my own negatives in the campus darkroom.</p> <p>My love for photography faded for a while but returned in <strong>2006</strong>, when I picked up a <strong>Nikon D40</strong>. Over time, I transitioned to <strong>Fujifilm’s X-series cameras</strong>, drawn in by their <strong>film-like aesthetic</strong> and tactile controls.</p> <p>These days, I focus on <strong>street photography, landscapes, and bird photography</strong>—anything that keeps me outside and exploring.</p> <h3>The Things That Keep Me Sane</h3> <h4><strong>Coffee</strong></h4> <p>I take my coffee seriously. I brew at home using <strong>freshly ground beans from a local organic fair trade roaster</strong>. My go-to methods? <strong>AeroPress and Chemex with reusable mesh coffee filters</strong>—because life’s too short for bad coffee.</p> <h4><strong>Craft Beer</strong></h4> <p>I savour <strong>pilsners, lagers, kölsch, and stouts</strong>, especially from New Jersey breweries like <strong>Flounder Brewing, Odd Bird Brewing, Wild Fern Brewing, and The Seed</strong>. If it’s crisp, well-crafted, and full of character, I’m interested. But I also enjoy India Pale Ales (IPA), fruited Belgian Lambic, and wild fermented ales.</p> <h3>Science Fiction & Nerdy Things</h3> <p>I’ve always loved <strong>science fiction</strong>, particularly <strong>cyberpunk</strong>. My blog’s name, <em>Island in the Net</em>, is inspired by <strong>Bruce Sterling’s 1988 novel, <em>Islands in the Net</em></strong>—a book filled with <strong>data pirates, nanotechnology, and geopolitical chaos</strong> that eerily predicted the modern Internet.</p> <p>I also grew up on <strong>superhero comics and graphic novels</strong>, mostly <strong>DC and Marvel</strong>. These days, I watch more sci-fi than I read, but the love is still there.</p> <h3>Living with Autoimmune Disease</h3> <p>In <strong>2006</strong>, I was diagnosed with <strong>Type 1 diabetes (LADA)</strong>. I manage my blood sugar with an <strong>insulin pump and CGM</strong> and sometimes write about diabetes technology.</p> <p>In <strong>2018</strong>, I was diagnosed with <strong>Graves’ disease</strong>, which led to multiple surgeries, including a <strong>thyroidectomy and orbital decompression surgery</strong>.</p> <p>Both <strong>Type 1 diabetes and Graves’ disease</strong> are autoimmune conditions, so I deal with their quirks daily. But I don’t let them define me.</p> <h3>Why This Blog Exists</h3> <p>I write for myself first. This blog is my <strong>creative outlet</strong>, a place to document my experiences, my thoughts, and whatever fascinates me at any given moment. If something here resonates with you, great! They could afford to drastically cut their prices and still make more than comfortable margins while creating more competition and innovation in the space. Their business model is a complicated tangle that includes non-disclosure agreements to University subscribers preventing them from discussing their rates with their peers to prevent better competition.
