The name Togarmah appears in genealogical and prophetic contexts, providing insights into the ancient Near Eastern world and its peoples.

Genealogy and Lineage

Togarmah is introduced in the Table of Nations in Genesis 10, which outlines the descendants of Noah's sons after the Flood. According to Genesis 10:2-3 , "The sons of Japheth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras. The sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah." This passage places Togarmah as a grandson of Japheth and a son of Gomer, linking him to the broader Japhetic lineage, which is traditionally associated with the peoples of Europe and parts of Asia.

Geographical and Historical Context

The region or people of Togarmah is often identified with areas in Anatolia, particularly in the vicinity of modern-day Turkey. Historical and archaeological evidence suggests that Togarmah may be connected to the ancient Hittites or other Anatolian groups. The association with Anatolia is supported by the mention of Togarmah in Ezekiel 27:14 , which describes the trading activities of Tyre: "The men of Beth-togarmah exchanged horses, war horses, and mules for your wares." This indicates that Togarmah was known for its horses and was engaged in trade with the Phoenician city of Tyre.

Prophetic References

Togarmah is also mentioned in the context of eschatological prophecies. In Ezekiel 38:6 , Togarmah is listed among the nations that will join Gog in a future invasion of Israel: "Gomer with all its troops, and Beth-togarmah from the far north with all its troops—the many nations with you." This passage situates Togarmah as part of a coalition of nations from the "far north," suggesting a role in the end-times scenario described by the prophet Ezekiel.

Cultural and Theological Significance

The references to Togarmah in the Bible highlight the interconnectedness of ancient peoples and the expansive reach of biblical prophecy. Togarmah's inclusion in the Table of Nations underscores the diversity of humanity's origins and the spread of Noah's descendants across the earth. The prophetic mentions of Togarmah in Ezekiel emphasize the theme of divine sovereignty over the nations and the unfolding of God's plan in history.

In summary, Togarmah is a significant biblical figure and region, representing both historical peoples and prophetic themes. Its mention in the Bible provides valuable insights into the ancient world and the theological narrative of God's interaction with the nations.
Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary
Togarmah
which is all bone
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Togarmah
a son of Gomer, of the family of Japheth, and brother of Ashkenaz and Riphath. The meaning of the name is doubtful. Grimm (Gesch. deutsch. Sprache, II, 325) suggests Sanskr. toka, "tribe," and arma = Armenia. Etymological and other difficulties stand in the way of French Delitzsch's identification of Togarmah with the Assyrian Til-garimmu, "hill of Garimmu," or, possibly, "of the bone-heap," a fortress of Melitene, on the borders of Tabal (Tubal).

2. Probably Armenia or a Tract Connected Therewith:

In Ezekiel 27:14 Togarmah is mentioned after Tubal, Javan and Mesech as supplying horses and mules to the Tyrians, and in 38:6 it is said to have supplied soldiers to the army of Gog (Gyges of Lydia). In the Assyrian inscriptions horses came from Kusu (neighborhood of Cappadocia), Andia and Mannu, to the North of Assyria. Both Kiepert and Dillmann regard Togarmah as having been Southeastern Armenia, and this is at present the general opinion. The ancient identification of their country with Togarmah by the Armenians, though correct, is probably due to the Septuagint transposition of "g" and "r" (Thorgama for Togarmah), which has caused them to see therein the name of Thorgom, father of Haik, the founder of their race (Moses of Khor, I, 4, secs. 9-11). Ezekiel 27:14 (Swete) alone has "g" before "r": Thaigrama.
