Definitely better than the first book. This was more fast-paced, with a couple of twists and turns that I didn't exactly see coming. The addition of the lying and deception was great, like how the few people introduced into Katy's life actually turn out to be lying, greedy spies which affected not only her, but her mother too. It wasn't included in the book, but you could imagine how horrified and hurt her mom would be upon finding out that her first boyfriend since becoming a widow was some evil power-greedy dude.

Plus, Katy got chained in a cage and tortured. Now that was fun. :D

Oh, and Dawson came back at the end! Now that definitely earns some bonus points for this book. After reading bout him being dead/lost/tortured/whatevers, and people getting all angsty all over him, you'll get pretty curious about what he's like. And let's not forget the fact that he looks exactly like Daemon.

What else I liked about Onyx was that we got to see the real Daemon most of the time, the nice protective Daemon towards Katy and his friends, instead of the jerk-alien we got for most of Obsidian. Made everything less cliche. I mean, seriously, I know YA books that include hot guys who act all witty and jerky would win instant brownie points for a number of female teen readers but it's getting really old. It had been something that didn't quite sit well with me in the first book.

The mush between Katy and Daemon could be a little too much at times to me though. Like that scene in Daemon's bedroom. It's not like it's that bad - I've read worse - but I've never been a fan of those parts involving a hell lot of kissing and touching and murmuring and god-knows-what.

I wouldn't give this 5 stars though. There are a number of things that I didn't really like with Onyx, but I can't think of all of them and put them to coherent words right now cuz my mind is still kinda reeling from Dawson. :D ( )

      koaytm | Nov 27, 2024 |

Initial Thoughts
So after I finished Obsidian, I ran to the bookstore and bought the second book the next day. I also finished it that same day. SO I guess you can say that this series is addicting. Even though I didn’t give it five stars, i still had to have more.

My New Best Friend
Still Dee. I was sad that we didn’t get to see her as much in this book. I really love her. I also liked Adam too even though we didn’t see a lot of him either. Both were really cool characters that stood up for what was right instead of following everyone else.

My Crush
Still Daemon. And there was A LOT of him in this book. The sexual tension in this book compared to the last was incredible. His relationship with Katy is getting better but they still hate each other at the same time. I love it. Katy however, is getting on my nerves. She’s turning into one of those girls that doesn’t think about anything and rushes off to go do something stupid. If she gets worse in the next book I might have to stop reading.

Writing Style
The writing was better than the first book I think. And I really enjoyed the pace that it was going at. It was just slow enough for you to enjoy every little piece. I hated that they made fun of cliches in the book but then the author would turn around and use the exact same one. That was kind of lame. And the similarities to Twilight were still there. I HATE that, Twilight was not a good book for me so when the author basically uses the EXACT SAME LINES, well that makes me a little mad.

Closing Thoughts
I really enjoyed this book even with all the little things I hated. Why can’t there just be a perfect book out there with nothing wrong with it!? I wish Twilight had never existed so that this book was better. The starting of this one was a little slow. There were a lot of Daemon/Katy moments and not enough action. It did pick up a lot in the end though. The ending was expected but it was really good all the same. The setup for the third book was really well done. I did enjoy this book though, even though it was frustrating. It’s a love/hate relationship.

Bonus
Still Daemon. Seriously. Read this book just for him. Also the main character is a book nerd AND a book blogger! How cool is that! I feel like they make fun of it thought.

Quote
“I always liked you. This was such a roller coaster of energy and information and love and....just everything. His little nicknames and sharp edged comments. I thought he was rude and horrible and so annoying.

This book, my view point did a complete 180. This series is just getting better and better. I can't wait to see what else it brings. The chemistry between the two characters is absolutely perfect. There is almost the perfect amount of angst thrown in without being so much that I want to pull my hair out. The main characters are fun and I genuinely like them both. Katy keeps making stupid decisions though. It ended on a cliffhanger, of course. So I'm antsy to see what book 3 will bring. I do want to make a quick note about the cover models. While I think both are extremely attractive. The girl looks nothing like what I would have pictured Katy as. And while the guy is super yummy looking. The way the Armentrout sucks you into this world is phenomenal. I mean the minute I had read "Shadows" I knew I was going to be hooked into this series. But now after reading "Onyx" and omg I just didn't want it to end, I don't want to have to wait the continuation of Daemon and Katy's adventures, including Dee who omg I feel so bad for it made me want to cry. And Blake that punk ass, gawd I knew something wasn't right about him, or Will that creep he just seemed to be too good to be true, in any case he was. Then Ash semi-sort of chilling out on Katy, mmhmm what is going on there I wonder. But the ending OMG OMG OMg!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so glad I don't have to wait like a year for "Opal" to come out, and fortunately is comes out in December it's going to be a killer wait, but fortunately I have other books to keep me occupied, plus school, plus life until then. I JUST LOVE THIS SERIES! I read them for the plot line, and while this had one it was a tad shaky. Most of it relied on Katy making a lot of idiotic and spur of the moment decisions, some of which had some pretty serious consequences. Not to mention I am pretty sure this chick is void of any gut instincts. I guess that is a good way to keep the action going. Most people wouldn't want to read a suspenseful book where the protagonist says things like "I am not going in there", "I ain't helping any strangers", "Yeah, sounds dangerous, no thanks." I guess if the book was about me as a protagonist in these situations we would have a 30 page book. It would end the first second shit got REAL. :D I digress. The book itself is a quick read and JLA has an amazing ability to suck you into a book with her writing. I will most likely continue with the series, because sometimes I like to read books that don't require me to think on a deeper level. This is missing actual science and common sense, and has a lot of twists and turns in the action (even if predictable at times) so I would still recommend it and I will most likely continue on with the series. ( )

      Jonez | Oct 24, 2019 |

4.5/5 Stars

Although I did thoroughly enjoy this book...My love for it isn't as strong as it is for Obsidian. I ordered the first 4 books in bind ups and the fifth book as well..which is due to come out the 5th of August (in the States). I ordered paperback I think, so I'm not sure if I will be getting the paperback after the 5th of August, or if I will have to wait for it. I looked around on Amazon to see when it came out and it said on the 5th, so hopefully I will get it sooner rather than later.

I can't wait to see what happens in Opal..although I did get a bit of a spoiler from someone about something that happens in one of the books, so that's kind of frustrating for me..This one is kind of a big spoiler (for me anyway) because it's something I would have liked to have learned when I was reading the book itself and would have liked it to be a surprise, although I did kind of expect some things to happen around this person anyway, but I still didn't want the spoiler. I guess that's the bad thing about being on some sites sometimes, you tend to mistakenly see things about certain books or movies you didn't want to see. But, I guess things happen. I guess now, I just need to see how it went about (which again, I have my suspicions).. :-(

But, I'm still looking forward to hopefully finishing the entire series as soon as I can. :-) ( )

      RamblingBookNerd | Jun 5, 2019 |

Katy, niña, a veces he querido darte un buen bofetón solo porque no te das cuenta de lo obvio. ( )

      dieciseislunas | Jun 2, 2019 |

Ha. Armentrout’s Lux series.
I mostly love this book and the continuing story. There is a lot of passion and even more adventure. The world and concept is complex and my sci-fi heart loves all of that.
I have a few relationship and human dynamics quibbles, though.
This is not unique to Armentrout not to this series.
But I really don't love the whole "He hates me and loves me at the same time and I just don't know what to do!" issue. It's not as bad as Twilight, say, or Beauty and The Beast.
No, there are some life threatening reasons for Katy's out of this world beaux being over protective and moody. I mean, I get it. And the attitude stops fairly early on.
However, just given my field, it kept throwing up red flags and was distracting. He's a good guy which makes the red flags all that more concerning. While everything works out in the fiction sense, I feel like I just need to say that most guys who are trouble at the start, are not instantly going to change for a partner.
Ok, I have said my thing. Dee was not there. At all. In book 1, Dee had been a HUGE influence and I loved that not only was it a great friendship for YA, but also, both friends were 'in the loop' (ever notice how every YA book every main character ends ups spending the entire series lying to their best friend until she fades away into non-existence?) Half of the time Dee was mentioned in this book, it was the idea of Dee rather than the character of Dee on the page and it just really annoyed me how NOT THERE she was.

2. Daemon and the word "want". Daemon said "want" a LOT in this book. As in, he kept on telling Katy he "wanted" her, and it all felt kind of sketchy to me. But I really did like the way Katy handled how Daemon addressed her--she always seemed really clear on whether they were discussing being attracted to each other or having actual feelings for each other. But it irks me that Daemon never actually professed to having feelings for Katy deeper than attraction over the course of this book.

All in all though, as I said, I enjoyed this book for what it was, and this book was meant to be fluff with overt sexual undertones and it did a great job at that and keeping me entertained, so thumbs up.

2013 reaction:
Oh. My fascination with Katy has surpassed the fan-girl level!

She remains to be one of the best advanced and written YA PNR heroines I read – OKAY I did not read that many yet LOL. Her strong-will never dithers. I love that she isn't defined by her Daemon and can stand alone as a fascinating, layered and comprehensive character without Daemon.

Relationship development
The proceedings in (Lux #1), left Katy connected to Daemon in more ways than one (read book 1 to find out – I tried not to reveal too much in review 1). Not sure if their feelings are real or just a consequence of this connection formed in (Lux #1).

Katy tries to keep some distance between her and Daemon but oh man he doesn't make this easy for the both of them as the attraction is so strong, alas he has set his eyes on her and he is not letting go ***gone is the alien who does not like humans ;-)*** ♥

Daemon is out to prove what he feels for Katy is more than physical! He is a much stronger willed character as Kat, BUT Katy definitely isn't immune to his charm and presence

(OMG Who will not be, read the book to see where this statements comes from (Lux #1) the part where he is shirtless – just Yummy :D)

When a new, cute boy, with secrets of his own, shows up, Katy finds the disruptions is just what she needs, BUT OUR BOY Daemon does not like this development at all jealous not a good word to describe this as this is much worst– LOL, and oh man he makes life very difficult for our new character.

Chapter Development
But the group has bigger problems than confusing lust/love to deal with, the DOD is in town and they're suspicious. And things get even more complicated when Katy sees someone who shouldn't be alive and she learns that maybe the DOD isn't just interested in the Lux; maybe they're interested in her, But why –

READ THE BOOK AND FIND OUT?

A few paragraphs / quotes → I loved

.Some of my favorite non-spoiler quotes from Onyx:
-"Maybe one day I can be just as lazy as you are and turn off the lights without moving."
"That's something to aspire to."

-"Your mail could've waited." Daemon followed me into the kitchen. "What is it? Just books?"
Grabbing the OJ from the fridge, I sighed. People who didn't heart books didn't understand. "Yeah, it was just books."

-He nodded and smiled angelically for the camera, but his eyes stirred with amusement. Yep, this was a bad idea.
"I think reading is sexy." Daemon smiled at himself.
My brows inched up my forehead. "Do you now?"
"Oh, yes, and do you know what else I think is sexy?" He leaned forward so his entire face filled the picture and nodded his head toward me. "Bloggers like this. Hot."

-He handed me each book, unable to refrain from making a comment and taking my whole recording hostage. Like, "This guy looks stupid," or "What's the obsession with fallen angels?" And my favorite was when he held the book in front of my face and said, "This reaper dude sounds like my kind of guy. He gets to kill people for a living."

-With him standing over me, his eyes such a stark contrast with the darkness, he looked like something straight out of my dreams...or the books I read.

-He glared Blake into submission. "I think I can help her with this."
Sitting on the arm of the couch, Blake waved his hand. "Sure. Whatever. She's all yours."
Daemon grinned. "That she is."

- "You want this as badly as you want to go to ALA this winter."
Now my jaw was on the floor. "You don't even know what ALA is!"
"American Library Association midwinter event," he said, grinning proudly. "Saw you obsessing over it on your blog before you got sick. I'm pretty sure you said you'd give up your firstborn child to go."

Yeah, I kind of did say that.

-Whoa. It was hard to stick to my resolve of not caving to the ridiculous notion of us being together when he was actually...nice, and when he stared at me like I was the last piece of chocolate in the whole world.

-"It's why you suddenly like me."

"I'm pretty sure I liked you before this, Kitten."

"Well you had one hell of a way of showing it."

"True," he admitted. "And I've already said I'm sorry for the way I treated you." He took a fortifying breath. "I always liked you. From the moment you first flipped me off."

-"Somehow, I believe you."

"If you didn't, I could always give you a teaser." He paused, and I could hear the smile in his voice. "You bookish people love teasers, don't you?"

I laughed, "You've been doing your research on my blog."

"Maybe," he replied. "Like I said, I've got to keep an eye on you, Kitten."

-Daemon leaned over the centre console and kissed me. The tender touch was so at odds with what he'd just said. Deadly and sweet-that was what Daemon was; two very different kinds of souls rested in him, fused together.

Epilogue! →

There are two things I've come to anticipate from Jennifer Armentrout's YA books: 1) they WILL be made of breath taking 2) they will make sense the feelings she added with her writing, Onyx is no exception.

Recommend to the following type of readers: →
Over 16 etc as NA BOOK

Why my rating?→
Don’t be foolish read the book!!!!

Will I read it again?→
OH YES – WILL I RECOMMEND IT OH YES

My feelings while reading this: →

To the Author
The addicting and clever writing and storytelling of the first book are smoothly carried over into Onyx.
