<t><p class="indent1">You are<MH959> greatly<MH3966> despised<MH959>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/obadiah/1-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>“The arrogance<MH2087> of your heart<MH3820> has deceived<MH5378> you, <t><p class="indent1">The one who lives<MH7931> in the clefts<MH2288> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>the rock<MH5553>, <t><p class="indent1"><i>On the</i> height<MH4791> of his dwelling<MH7675> place<MH7675>, <t><p class="indent1">Who says<MH559> in his heart<MH3820>, <t><p class="indent1">‘Who<MH4310> will bring<MH3381> me down<MH3381> to earth<MH776>?’ <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/obadiah/1-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>“Though<MH518> you make<MH1361b> <i>your home</i> high<MH1361b> like the eagle<MH5404>, <t><p class="indent1">Though<MH518> you set<MH7760> your nest<MH7064> among<MH996> the stars<MH3556>, <t><p class="indent1">From there<MH8033> I will bring<MH3381> you down<MH3381>,” declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/obadiah/1-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>“If<MH518> thieves<MH1590> came<MH935> to you, <t><p class="indent1">If<MH518> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>robbers<MH7703> by night<MH3915>— <t><p class="indent1">Oh<MH349> how<MH349> you will be ruined<MH1820>!— <t><p class="indent1">Would they not steal<MH1589> <i>only</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>until they had enough<MH1767>? <t><p class="indent1">If<MH518> grape-pickers<MH1219> came<MH935> to you, <t><p class="indent1">Would they not leave<MH7604> <i>some</i> gleanings<MH5955>? <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/obadiah/1-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>“Oh<MH349> how<MH349> Esau<MH6215> will be searched<MH2664>, <t><p class="indent1"><i>And</i> his hidden<MH4710> treasures<MH4710> searched<MH1158> out<MH1158>! <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/obadiah/1-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>“All<MH3605> the people<MH376> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>allied<MH1285> with you <t><p class="indent1">Will send<MH7971> you to the border<MH1366>, <t><p class="indent1"><i>And</i> the people<MH376> at peace<MH7965> with you <t><p class="indent1">Will deceive<MH5378> you <i>and</i> overpower<MH3201> you. <t><p class="indent1"><i>They who eat</i> your bread<MH3899> <t><p class="indent1">Will set<MH7760> an ambush<MH4204> for you. <t><p class="indent1">(There<MH369> is<MH369> no<MH369> understanding<MH8394> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>in him.) <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/obadiah/1-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>“Will I not on that day<MH3117>,” declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>, <p class="indent1stline">“Eliminate<MH6> wise<MH2450> men<MH2450> from Edom<MH112b>, <t><p class="indent1">And understanding<MH8394> from the mountain<MH2022> of Esau<MH6215>? <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/obadiah/1-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>“Then your warriors<MH1368> will be filled<MH2865> with<MH2865> terror<MH2865>, Teman<MH8487>, <t><p class="indent1">So<MH4616> that<MH4616> everyone<MH376> will be eliminated<MH3772> from the mountain<MH2022> of Esau<MH6215> by murder<MH6993>. <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/obadiah/1-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>“Because<MH4480> of violence<MH2555> to your brother<MH251> Jacob<MH3290>, <t><p class="indent1">Shame<MH955> will cover<MH3680> you, <t><p class="indent1">And you will be eliminated<MH3772> forever<MH5769>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/obadiah/1-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>“On the day<MH3117> that you stood<MH5975> aloof<MH4480, 5048>, <t><p class="indent1">On the day<MH3117> that strangers<MH2114a> carried<MH7617> off<MH7617> his wealth<MH2428>, <t><p class="indent1">And foreigners<MH5237> entered<MH935> his gate<MH8179> <t><p class="indent1">And cast<MH3032> lots<MH1486> for Jerusalem<MH3389>— <t><p class="indent1">You too<MH1571> were as one<MH259> of them. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/obadiah/1-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>“Do not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>gloat<MH7200> over your brother’s<MH251> day<MH3117>, <t><p class="indent1">The day<MH3117> of his misfortune<MH5235b>. <t><p class="indent1">And do not rejoice<MH8055> over the sons<MH1121> of Judah<MH3063> <t><p class="indent1">On the day<MH3117> of their destruction<MH6>; <t><p class="indent1">And do not hand<MH5462> over<MH5462> their refugees<MH8300> <t><p class="indent1">On the day<MH3117> of their distress<MH6869a>. <p class="hdg">The Day of the LORD and the Future</p><poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/obadiah/1-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>“For the day<MH3117> of the LORD<MH3068> is near<MH7138> for all<MH3605> the nations<MH1471>. <t><p class="indent1">Just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> you have done<MH6213a>, it will be done<MH6213a> to you. <t><p class="indent1">Your dealings<MH1576> will return<MH7725> on your own head<MH7218>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/obadiah/1-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>“For just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> you drank<MH8354> on My holy<MH6944> mountain<MH2022>, <t><p class="indent1">All<MH3605> the nations<MH1471> will drink<MH8354> continually<MH8548>. <t><p class="indent1">They will drink<MH8354> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>to<MH3886a> the<MH3886a> last<MH3886a> drop<MH3886a>, <t><p class="indent1">And become<MH1961> as if they had never<MH3808> existed<MH1961>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/obadiah/1-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>“But on Mount<MH2022> Zion<MH6726> there will be those who<MH6413> escape<MH6413>, <t><p class="indent1">And it will be holy<MH6944>. <t><p class="indent1">And the house<MH1004> of Jacob<MH3290> will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>possess<MH3423> their <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>property<MH4180>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/obadiah/1-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>“Then the house<MH1004> of Jacob<MH3290> will be a fire<MH784>, <t><p class="indent1">And the house<MH1004> of Joseph<MH3130> a flame<MH3852>;
