Job is depicted as a man of exceptional character and integrity, as seen in the opening chapters of the book. His distinctiveness is emphasized by God Himself, who describes Job as "blameless and upright" (<a href="/job/1-8.htm">Job 1:8</a>). This rhetorical question underscores the rarity of Job's situation and his unparalleled suffering and endurance. In the broader biblical context, Job's character can be compared to other figures like Noah and Daniel, who are also noted for their righteousness (<a href="/ezekiel/14-14.htm">Ezekiel 14:14</a>).<p><b>who drinks up derision like water?</b><br>This vivid metaphor suggests that Job is so accustomed to scorn and mockery that he absorbs it effortlessly, as one would drink water. In the cultural context of the Ancient Near East, water was a basic necessity, and the comparison implies that derision has become a regular part of Job's life. This phrase reflects the intense social and emotional suffering Job endures, as his friends and community fail to understand his plight. The imagery of drinking also connects to other biblical passages where water symbolizes life and sustenance, contrasting with the bitterness of Job's experience. This can be seen as a type of Christ, who also faced mockery and scorn during His earthly ministry (<a href="/matthew/27-29.htm">Matthew 27:29-31</a>), yet remained steadfast in His mission.<div class="vheading2">Persons / Places / Events</div>1. <b><a href="/topical/j/job.htm">Job</a></b><br>A man described as blameless and upright, who feared God and shunned evil. It was not for Elihu, who professed a desire to "justify" (or completely exonerate) Job, to aggravate his guilt by means of rhetorical comment; and the comment itself was unfair, for Job had not indulged in scorn to any extent, much less "drunk it up like water" (comp. <a href="/job/15-16.htm">Job 15:16</a>). He had in no respect scorned God; and if he had occasionally poured some scorn upon his "comforters" (<a href="/job/6-21.htm">Job 6:21</a>; <a href="/job/12-2.htm">Job 12:2</a>; <a href="/job/13-4.htm">Job 13:4-13</a>; <a href="/job/16-2.htm">Job 16:2</a>; <a href="/job/21-2.htm">Job 21:2-5</a>; <a href="/job/26-2.htm">Job 26:2-4</a>), must it not be admitted that they had deserved it? It was the duty of Elihu to act as moderator between Job and the "comforters," whereas he here seeks to exasperate them, and lash them up to fury against their afflicted friend. Perhaps Job's impassive attitude has embittered him. <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/job/34-7.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">What</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1502;&#1460;&#1497;&#1470;</span> <span class="translit">(m&#238;-)</span><br /><span class="parse">Interrogative<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_4310.htm">Strong's 4310: </a> </span><span class="str2">Who?, whoever, in oblique construction with prefix, suffix</span><br /><br /><span class="word">man</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1490;&#1462;&#1445;&#1489;&#1462;&#1512;</span> <span class="translit">(&#7713;e&#183;&#7687;er)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_1397.htm">Strong's 1397: </a> </span><span class="str2">A valiant man, warrior, a person simply</span><br /><br /><span class="word">is like Job,</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1499;&#1468;&#1456;&#1488;&#1460;&#1497;&#1468;&#1425;&#1493;&#1465;&#1489;</span> <span class="translit">(k&#601;&#183;&#8217;&#238;&#183;y&#333;&#183;w&#7687;)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition-k &#124; Noun - proper - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_347.htm">Strong's 347: </a> </span><span class="str2">Job -- a patriarch</span><br /><br /><span class="word">[who] drinks up</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1497;&#1460;&#1469;&#1513;&#1473;&#1456;&#1514;&#1468;&#1462;&#1492;&#1470;</span> <span class="translit">(yi&#353;&#183;teh-)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_8354.htm">Strong's 8354: </a> </span><span class="str2">To imbibe</span><br /><br /><span class="word">derision</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1500;&#1468;&#1463;&#1445;&#1506;&#1463;&#1490;</span> <span class="translit">(la&#183;&#8216;a&#7713;)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3933.htm">Strong's 3933: </a> </span><span class="str2">A mocking, derision</span><br /><br /><span class="word">like water?</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1499;&#1468;&#1463;&#1502;&#1468;&#1464;&#1469;&#1497;&#1460;&#1501;&#1475;</span> <span class="translit">(kam&#183;m&#257;&#183;yim)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition-k, Article &#124; Noun - masculine plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_4325.htm">Strong's 4325: </a> </span><span class="str2">Water, juice, urine, semen</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/job/34-7.htm">Job 34:7 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/job/34-7.htm">Job 34:7 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/job/34-7.htm">Job 34:7 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/job/34-7.htm">Job 34:7 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/job/34-7.htm">Job 34:7 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/job/34-7.htm">Job 34:7 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/job/34-7.htm">Job 34:7 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/job/34-7.htm">Job 34:7 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/job/34-7.htm">Job 34:7 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/job/34-7.htm">Job 34:7 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/job/34-7.htm">OT Poetry: Job 34:7 What man is like Job who drinks (Jb) </a></div></div></td></tr></table></div><div id="left"><a href="/job/34-6.htm" onmouseover='lft.src="/leftgif.png"' onmouseout='lft.src="/left.png"' title="Job 34:6"><img src="/left.png" name="lft" border="0" alt="Job 34:6" /></a></div><div id="right"><a href="/job/34-8.htm" onmouseover='rght.src="/rightgif.png"' onmouseout='rght.src="/right.png"' title="Job 34:8"><img src="/right.png" name="rght" border="0" alt="Job 34:8" /></a></div><div id="botleft"><a href="#" onmouseover='botleft.src="/botleftgif.png"' onmouseout='botleft.src="/botleft.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botleft.png" name="botleft" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="botright"><a href="#" onmouseover='botright.src="/botrightgif.png"' onmouseout='botright.src="/botright.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botright.png" name="botright" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="bot"><iframe width="100%" height="1500" scrolling="no" src="/botmenubhnew2.htm" frameborder="0"></iframe></div></td></tr></table></div></body></html>
