In the arid regions of the biblical lands, grass was a vital resource for grazing animals and a symbol of God's provision and care.

Symbol of Transience and Mortality

The Bible often uses grass to illustrate the fleeting nature of human life. In Isaiah 40:6-8, the prophet declares, "All flesh is grass, and all its glory is like the flowers of the field. The grass withers, the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever." This passage emphasizes the temporary nature of human existence in contrast to the eternal word of God. Similarly, in Psalm 103:15-16, it is written, "As for man, his days are like grass—he blooms like a flower of the field; when the wind passes over, it vanishes, and its place remembers it no more."

Provision and Sustenance

Grass is also depicted as a sign of God's provision. In Psalm 104:14, the psalmist praises God for His creation, stating, "He makes the grass grow for the livestock and provides crops for man to cultivate, bringing forth food from the earth." This verse highlights God's role in sustaining both animals and humans through the growth of grass and other vegetation.

Judgment and Destruction

In some contexts, grass is used metaphorically to describe judgment and destruction. In 2 Kings 19:26, the Assyrians are described as "short-lived plants, like grass on the rooftops, scorched before it grows up." This imagery conveys the idea of swift and inevitable judgment upon those who oppose God.

New Testament References

The New Testament also uses grass to convey spiritual truths. In Matthew 6:30, Jesus uses grass to teach about God's care and provision: "If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?" This passage encourages believers to trust in God's provision and not to be anxious about material needs.

Conclusion

Throughout the Bible, grass serves as a powerful symbol of the brevity of life, the certainty of God's provision, and the reality of divine judgment. Its presence in Scripture reminds believers of the importance of relying on God's eternal word and trusting in His care and sustenance.
ATS Bible Dictionary
Grass
Sometimes means any green herbage, Isaiah 15:6, and sometimes the usual food of cattle, Psalm 104:14.
