The giving of children to another nation signifies the loss of family and heritage, a devastating outcome for the Israelites who valued lineage and inheritance. Historically, this prophecy was fulfilled during the Assyrian and Babylonian exiles when Israelites were taken captive. The loss of children to foreign nations also symbolizes spiritual estrangement from God, as children represent future generations and the continuation of faith.
while your eyes grow weary looking for them day after day
The imagery of weary eyes conveys a sense of hopelessness and prolonged suffering. This reflects the deep emotional and spiritual anguish experienced by parents separated from their children. The phrase suggests a relentless longing and the futility of waiting for their return. In a broader biblical context, this can be seen as a metaphor for the spiritual blindness and despair that result from turning away from God. It echoes the lamentations of the prophets, such as Jeremiah, who mourned the fate of Israel.
with no power in your hand
This phrase emphasizes the complete helplessness and lack of control experienced by the Israelites. It underscores the severity of the judgment for disobedience, where even the most basic human rights and powers are stripped away. This powerlessness can be seen as a direct consequence of breaking the covenant with God, who is the ultimate source of strength and protection. Theologically, it points to the need for reliance on God rather than human strength. In the New Testament, this theme is echoed in the teachings of Jesus, who emphasizes dependence on God for deliverance and salvation.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Moses
The author of Deuteronomy, delivering God's laws and warnings to the Israelites.

2. Israelites
The chosen people of God, receiving the blessings and curses based on their obedience or disobedience.

3. Another Nation
Represents foreign nations that would take the Israelites' children due to their disobedience.

4. Promised Land
The land God promised to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, which the Israelites are about to enter.

5. Covenant
The agreement between God and Israel, which includes blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience.
Teaching Points
The Seriousness of Disobedience
Disobedience to God’s commands can have severe and far-reaching consequences, affecting not just the individual but also their family and community.

The Importance of Covenant Faithfulness
The Israelites were bound by a covenant with God, and their faithfulness was crucial to receiving His blessings. Many of the nations bordering on Israel were accustomed when they made inroads to take away, not only the cattle, but the children for slaves. Another equally pathetic passage in Jeremiah touches on the very same thing. "A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation and bitter weeping; Rachel weeping for her children, refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not." And it would not always be said, as it was then, "they shall come again from the land of the enemy" (Jeremiah 31:15-17).
Thine eyes shall . . . fail--i.e., shall consume. "All longing after that which comes not is called consumption of the eyes" (Rashi).
And there shall be no might in thine hand.--The Hebrew phrase here is very remarkable. It occurs also in Genesis 31:29. "It is in the power of mine hand to do you hurt." But it means, literally, thou shalt have no hand toward God, i.e., "thou shalt not be able to lift a hand to Him." We may compare Jacob wrestling with the angel, and Moses in the fight with Amalek: "When he held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed." Some would perhaps explain the phrase in another way; but this explanation is thoroughly in accordance with the genius of the Hebrew language, and I have good authority for it. Hezekiah said, "Mine eyes fail with looking upward." Here the eyes fail with looking, but cannot look up.

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 32. - And there shall be no might in thine hand.
