And a disciple<MG3101> was there<MG1563>, named<MG3686> Timothy<MG5095>, the son<MG5207> of a Jewish<MG2453> woman<MG1135> who was a believer<MG4103>, but his father<MG3962> was a Greek<MG1672>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>and he was well<MG3140> spoken<MG3140> of by the brothers<MG80> <i>and sisters</i> who were in Lystra<MG3082> and Iconium<MG2430>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Paul<MG3972> wanted<MG2309> this<MG3778> man<MG3778> to leave<MG1831> with him; and he took<MG2983> him and circumcised<MG4059> him because<MG1223> of the Jews<MG2453> who were in those<MG1565> parts<MG5117>, for they all<MG537a> knew<MG3609a> that his father<MG3962> was a Greek<MG1672>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> while<MG5613> they were passing<MG1279> through<MG1279> the cities<MG4172>, they were delivering<MG3860> the ordinances<MG1378> for them to follow<MG5442> which had been determined<MG2919> by the apostles<MG652> and elders<MG4245> in Jerusalem<MG2414>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>So<MG3767> the churches<MG1577> were being strengthened<MG4732> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>in the faith<MG4102>, and were increasing<MG4052> in number<MG706> daily<MG2596, 2250>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>They passed<MG1330> through<MG1330> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>Phrygian<MG5435> and Galatian<MG1054> region<MG5561>, after being forbidden<MG2967> by the Holy<MG40> Spirit<MG4151> to speak<MG2980> the word<MG3056> in <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>Asia<MG773>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>and after they came<MG2064> to Mysia<MG3465>, they were trying<MG3985> to go<MG4198> into Bithynia<MG978>, and the Spirit<MG4151> of Jesus<MG2424> did not allow<MG1439> them; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>and passing<MG3928> by Mysia<MG3465>, they went<MG2597> down<MG2597> to Troas<MG5174>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And a vision<MG3705> appeared<MG3708> to Paul<MG3972> in the night<MG3571>: a man<MG435> of Macedonia<MG3110> was standing<MG2476> and pleading<MG3870> with him, and saying<MG3004>, “Come<MG1224> over<MG1224> to Macedonia<MG3109> and help<MG997> us.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>When<MG5613> he had seen<MG3708> the vision<MG3705>, we immediately<MG2112> sought<MG2212> to leave<MG1831> for Macedonia<MG3109>, concluding<MG4822> that God<MG2316> had called<MG4341> us to preach<MG2097> the gospel<MG2097> to them. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>So<MG3767> after setting<MG321> sail<MG321> from Troas<MG5174>, we ran<MG2113> a<MG2113> straight<MG2113> course<MG2113> to Samothrace<MG4543>, and on the following<MG1897> <i>day</i> to Neapolis<MG3496>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>and from<MG2547> there<MG2547> to Philippi<MG5375>, which<MG3748> is a leading<MG4413> city<MG4172> of the district<MG3310> of Macedonia<MG3109>, a <i>Roman</i> colony<MG2862>; and we were spending<MG1304> some<MG5100> days<MG2250> in this<MG3778> city<MG4172>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And on the Sabbath<MG4521> day<MG2250> we went<MG1831> outside<MG1854> the gate<MG4439> to a riverside<MG3844, 4215>, where<MG3757> we were thinking<MG3543> that there was a place<MG4335> of<MG4335> prayer<MG4335>; and we sat<MG2523> down<MG2523> and began speaking<MG2980> to the women<MG1135> who had assembled<MG4905>. <p class="hdg">First Convert in Europe</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>A woman<MG1135> named<MG3686> Lydia<MG3070> was listening<MG191>; <i>she was</i> a seller<MG4211> of<MG4211> purple<MG4211> fabrics<MG4211> from the city<MG4172> of Thyatira<MG2363>, <i>and</i> a worshiper<MG4576> of God<MG2316>. <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>The Lord<MG2962> opened<MG1272> her heart<MG2588> to respond<MG4337> to the things<MG2980> spoken<MG2980> by Paul<MG3972>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> when<MG5613> she and her household<MG3624> had been baptized<MG907>, she urged<MG3870> <i>us,</i> saying<MG3004>, “If<MG1487> you have judged<MG2919> me to be faithful<MG4103> to the Lord<MG2962>, come<MG1525> into my house<MG3624> and stay<MG3306>.” And she prevailed<MG3849> upon us. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>It happened<MG1096> that as we were going<MG4198> to the place<MG4335> of prayer<MG4335>, a slave<MG3814> woman<MG3814> who had<MG2192> a spirit<MG4151> of divination<MG4436> met<MG5221> us, who<MG3748> was bringing<MG3930> great<MG4183> profit<MG2039> to her masters<MG2962> by fortune-telling<MG3132>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>She followed<MG2628> Paul<MG3972> and us and cried<MG2896> out<MG2896> <i>repeatedly,</i> saying<MG3004>, “These<MG3778> men<MG444> are bond-servants<MG1401> of the Most<MG5310> High<MG5310> God<MG2316>, who<MG3748> are proclaiming<MG2605> to you a way<MG3598> of salvation<MG4991>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> she continued doing<MG4160> this<MG3778> for many<MG4183> days<MG2250>. But Paul<MG3972> was greatly<MG1278> annoyed<MG1278>, and he turned<MG1994> and said<MG3004> to the spirit<MG4151>, “I command<MG3853> you in the name<MG3686> of Jesus<MG2424> Christ<MG5547> to come<MG1831> out<MG1831> of her!” And it came<MG1831> out<MG1831> at that very<MG846> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>moment<MG5610>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>But when her masters<MG2962> saw<MG3708> that their hope<MG1680> of profit<MG2039> was <i>suddenly</i> gone<MG1831>, they seized<MG1949> Paul<MG3972> and Silas<MG4609> and dragged<MG1670> them into the marketplace<MG58> before<MG1909> the authorities<MG758>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>and when they had brought<MG4317> them to the chief<MG4755> magistrates<MG4755>, they said<MG3004>, “These<MG3778> men<MG444>, Jews<MG2453> as<MG2453> they<MG2453> are<MG2453>, are causing<MG1613> our city<MG4172> trouble<MG1613>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>and they are proclaiming<MG2605> customs<MG1485> that are not lawful<MG1832> for us to accept<MG3858> or<MG3761> to practice<MG4160>, <i>since</i> we are Romans<MG4514>.” <p class="hdg">Paul and Silas Imprisoned</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>The crowd<MG3793> joined<MG4911> in<MG4911> an<MG4911> attack<MG4911> against<MG2596> them, and the chief<MG4755> magistrates<MG4755> tore<MG4048> their <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>robes<MG2440> off<MG4048> them and proceeded to order<MG2753> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span><i>them</i> to be beaten<MG4463> with<MG4463> rods<MG4463>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>When they had struck<MG2007> them with many<MG4183> blows<MG4127>, they threw<MG906> them into prison<MG5438>, commanding<MG3853> the jailer<MG1200> to guard<MG5083> them securely<MG806>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>and he, having received<MG2983> such<MG5108> a command<MG3852>, threw<MG906> them into the inner<MG2082> prison<MG5438> and fastened<MG805> their feet<MG4228> in the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>stocks<MG3586>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> about<MG2596> midnight<MG3317> Paul<MG3972> and Silas<MG4609> were praying<MG4336> and singing<MG5214> hymns<MG5214> of<MG5214> praise<MG5214> to God<MG2316>, and the prisoners<MG1198> were listening<MG1874> to<MG1874> them; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>and suddenly<MG869> there was a great<MG3173> earthquake<MG4578>, so<MG5620> that<MG5620> the foundations<MG2310a> of the prison<MG1201> were shaken<MG4531>; and immediately<MG3916> all<MG3956> the doors<MG2374> were opened<MG455>, and everyone’s<MG3956> chains<MG1199> were unfastened<MG447>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>When the jailer<MG1200> awoke<MG1853> and saw<MG3708> the prison<MG5438> doors<MG2374> opened<MG455>, he drew<MG4685> <i>his</i> sword<MG3162> and was<MG3195> about<MG3195> to<MG3195> kill<MG337> himself<MG1438>, thinking<MG3543> that the prisoners<MG1198> had escaped<MG1628>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>But Paul<MG3972> called<MG5455> out<MG5455> with a loud<MG3173> voice<MG5456>, saying<MG3004>, “Do<MG4238> not harm<MG2556> yourself<MG4572>, for we are all<MG537a> here<MG1759a>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>And <i>the jailer</i> asked<MG154> for lights<MG5457> and rushed<MG1530> in<MG1530>, and trembling<MG1790> with<MG1790> fear<MG1790>, he fell<MG4363> down<MG4363> before<MG4363> Paul<MG3972> and Silas<MG4609>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>and after he brought<MG4254> them out, he said<MG5346>, “Sirs<MG2962>, what<MG5101> must<MG1163> I do<MG4160> to be saved<MG4982>?” <p class="hdg">The Jailer Converted</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>They said<MG3004>, “Believe<MG4100> in the Lord<MG2962> Jesus<MG2424>, and you will be saved<MG4982>, you and your household<MG3624>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>And they spoke<MG2980> the word<MG3056> of God<MG2962> to him together<MG4862> with all<MG3956> who<MG3588> were in his house<MG3614>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And he took<MG3880> them that <i>very</i> hour<MG5610> of the night<MG3571> and washed<MG3068> their wounds<MG4127>, and immediately<MG3916> he was baptized<MG907>, he and all<MG537a> his <i>household.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>And he brought<MG321> them into his house<MG3624> and set<MG3908> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>food<MG5132> before<MG3908> them, and was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>overjoyed<MG21>, since he had become<MG4100> a<MG4100> believer<MG4100> in God<MG2316> together<MG3832> with<MG3832> his whole<MG3832> household<MG3832>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> when day<MG2250> came<MG1096>, the chief<MG4755> magistrates<MG4755> sent<MG649> their officers<MG4465>, saying<MG3004>, “Release<MG630> those<MG1565> men<MG444>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>And the jailer<MG1200> reported<MG518> these<MG3778> words<MG3056> to Paul<MG3972>, <i>saying,</i> “The chief<MG4755> magistrates<MG4755> have sent<MG649> <i>word</i> that you be released<MG630>. So<MG3767> come<MG1831> out<MG1831> now<MG3568> and go<MG4198> in peace<MG1515>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>But Paul<MG3972> said<MG5346> to them, “After beating<MG1194> us in public<MG1219> without<MG178> due<MG178> process<MG178>—men<MG444> <i>who</i> are Romans<MG4514>—they threw<MG906> us into prison<MG5438>; and now<MG3568> they are releasing<MG1544b> us secretly<MG2977>? No<MG3756> indeed<MG1063>! On the contrary<MG1161>, let them come<MG2064> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>in person<MG846> and lead<MG1806> us out<MG1806>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/16-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>The officers<MG4465> reported<MG518> these<MG3778> words<MG4487> to the chief<MG4755> magistrates<MG4755>.
