The service, now in beta, draws information posted on social media sites by people withing a user's friends group, and displays that information (photos, posts, etc) alongside standard Google search search results. </p> <p>On the surface, this was all fine and dandy. It was good to see if any of your friends were discussing the subject matter you searched for without having to comb through a zillion profiles or log on and search individual sites. The biggest knock on social search was that many networks only publish a limited amount of information on the open Web, and therefore can’t be indexed by Google. </p> <p>Now, with Facebook's altered (and <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20100202001946/http://www.xchangemag.com/hotnews/google-social-search-privacy-snag-facebook.html">some say pesky</a>) privacy settings, social search <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20100202001946/http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/188099/googles_social_search_wont_leverage_much_of_facebook.html">won't be able to play in their sandbox</a>. In essence, social search is getting a good ole stiff arm, i.e. The Heisman.</p> <p>How will this play out for Google, who is really putting a lot of eggs in this basket? Personalized search is going to big business, but privacy groups and consumer advocates are putting up a stink. Some say, <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20100202001946/http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2354890,00.asp">rightfully so</a>. Others don't care.</p> <p>What most seem to forget in this entire privacy argument is that social search only divulges what users allow to share. It's equated to a fire hose or a dimmer on a light switch.
