Later, he was appointed as Chief of the Outpatient Clinic of the Pediatric Dentistry Clinic, Osaka University Dental Hospital. More recently, Dr. Nakano became Professor of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Osaka University Graduate School of Dentistry as well as Head of the Pediatric Dentistry Clinic of Osaka University Dental Hospital. Dr. Nakano is a trustee of the Japanese Society of Pediatric Dentistry, and a member of the International Association of Dental Research. Since her second year of dental school, Shaddox has actively participated in the scientific research development in Periodontology, both nationally and internationally. She joined the University of Florida Oral Biology department as a research scholar in 2004, developing part of her Ph.D. thesis project involving the microbiology of smokers with periodontal disease. Following a pos-doctoral fellowship in Periodontal Microbiology, she joined the Periodontology department in 2006. She has been the director of the main Periodontology course for DMD students since 2008, participates in undergraduate and graduate teaching, several college committees and has an intense research program, for which she devotes majority of her time. Shaddox main research study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, is aimed at evaluating immunological, microbiological and genetic factors involved with localized aggressive periodontal disease in children and adolescents. Shaddox’s recent NIH R01 grant renewal is aimed to expanding this cohort to tease out possible genetic markers and specific inflammatory mechanisms playing a role in this disease. She has also been leading a clinical research project to investigate the relationship between periodontal disease and type II Diabetes Mellitus and their inflammatory response, and how this relationships is related to their clinical response to periodontal treatment. Each organism has a specific sensitivity to the environmental stimuli and exhibits various adaptations to the environment. It means that in certain circumstances, the adaptive mechanisms can manifest themselves both in the bone tissue and teeth. This record is used by biologists (physical anthropologists) to assess the environmental conditions which affected and shaped the local populations. Such defects as a enamel hypoplasia, dental caries, periodontal diseases or some pathologies are important indicators of health and hygiene, the quality of nutrition and general living conditions. Innovative research idea was to determine the prevalence of pulp stones in the historical populations. Usually high prevalence of pulp stones is joined of the advanced age of the patients. However, conducted study showed a statistically significant relationship presence of pulp stones not with age of individuals, but rather with degrees of dental wear. In addition, we have shown that an important factor of pathological calcification of the pulp can be a diet with high levels of calcium. The important research was an identification of early stage of dental caries in archeological populations.
