then I will forgive<MH5545> their wrongdoing<MH5771> and their sin<MH2403b>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Then Jeremiah<MH3414> called<MH7121> Baruch<MH1263> the son<MH1121> of Neriah<MH5374>, and Baruch<MH1263> wrote<MH3789> on a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>scroll<MH4039, 5612> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>at the dictation<MH6310> of Jeremiah<MH3414> all<MH3605> the words<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068> which<MH834> He had spoken<MH1696> to him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Jeremiah<MH3414> then commanded<MH6680> Baruch<MH1263>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;I am <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>restricted<MH6113>; I cannot<MH3201, 3808> go<MH935> into the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>So you go<MH935> and read<MH7121> from the scroll<MH4039>, which<MH834> you have written<MH3789> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>at my dictation<MH6310>, the words<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>to the people<MH5971a> at the LORD&#8217;S<MH3068> house<MH1004> on a day<MH3117> of fasting<MH6685>. And you shall also<MH1571> read<MH7121> them <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>to all<MH3605> <i>the people of</i> Judah<MH3063> who come<MH935> from their cities<MH5892b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Perhaps<MH194> their pleading<MH8467> will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>come<MH5307> before<MH6440> the LORD<MH3068>, and everyone<MH376> will turn<MH7725> from his evil<MH7451a> way<MH1870>; for great<MH1419> is the anger<MH639> and the wrath<MH2534> that the LORD<MH3068> has pronounced<MH1696> against<MH413> this<MH2088> people<MH5971a>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>So Baruch<MH1263> the son<MH1121> of Neriah<MH5374> acted<MH6213a> in accordance with all<MH3605> that Jeremiah<MH3414> the prophet<MH5030> commanded<MH6680> him, reading<MH7121> from the book<MH5612> the words<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068> in the LORD&#8217;S<MH3068> house<MH1004>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Now in the fifth<MH2549> year<MH8141> of Jehoiakim<MH3079> the son<MH1121> of Josiah<MH2977>, king<MH4428> of Judah<MH3063>, in the ninth<MH8671> month<MH2320>, all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> in Jerusalem<MH3389> and all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> who came<MH935> from the cities<MH5892b> of Judah<MH3063> to Jerusalem<MH3389> proclaimed<MH7121> a fast<MH6685> before<MH6440> the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Then Baruch<MH1263> read<MH7121> to all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> from the book<MH5612> the words<MH1697> of Jeremiah<MH3414> in the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068> in the chamber<MH3957> of Gemariah<MH1587> the son<MH1121> of Shaphan<MH8227b> the scribe<MH5613b>, in the upper<MH5945a> courtyard<MH2691a>, at the entry<MH6607> of the New<MH2319> Gate<MH8179> of the LORD&#8217;S<MH3068> house<MH1004>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Now when Micaiah<MH4321> the son<MH1121> of Gemariah<MH1587>, the son<MH1121> of Shaphan<MH8227b>, had heard<MH8085> all<MH3605> the words<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068> from the book<MH5612>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>he went<MH3381> down<MH3381> to the king&#8217;s<MH4428> house<MH1004>, into the scribe&#8217;s<MH5613b> chamber<MH3957>. And behold<MH2009>, all<MH3605> the officials<MH8269> were sitting<MH3427> there<MH8033>&#8212;Elishama<MH476> the scribe<MH5613b>, Delaiah<MH1806> the son<MH1121> of Shemaiah<MH8098>, Elnathan<MH494> the son<MH1121> of Achbor<MH5907>, Gemariah<MH1587> the son<MH1121> of Shaphan<MH8227b>, Zedekiah<MH6667> the son<MH1121> of Hananiah<MH2608a>, and all<MH3605> the <i>other</i> officials<MH8269>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And Micaiah<MH4321> declared<MH5046> to them all<MH3605> the words<MH1697> that he had heard<MH8085> when Baruch<MH1263> read<MH7121> from the book<MH5612> to the people<MH5971a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then all<MH3605> the officials<MH8269> sent<MH7971> Jehudi<MH3065> the son<MH1121> of Nethaniah<MH5418>, <i>who was</i> the son<MH1121> of Shelemiah<MH8018>, the son<MH1121> of Cushi<MH3570>, to Baruch<MH1263>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;Take<MH3947> in your hand<MH3027> the scroll<MH4039> from which<MH834> you have read<MH7121> to the people<MH5971a> and come<MH1980>.&#8221; So Baruch<MH1263> the son<MH1121> of Neriah<MH5374> took<MH3947> the scroll<MH4039> in his hand<MH3027> and came<MH935> to them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And they said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Sit<MH3427> down<MH3427>, please<MH4994>, and read<MH7121> it to us.&#8221; So Baruch<MH1263> read<MH7121> it to them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>When they had heard<MH8085> all<MH3605> the words<MH1697>, they turned<MH6342> in<MH6342> fear<MH6342> one<MH376> to another<MH7453>. And they said<MH559> to Baruch<MH1263>, &#8220;We will certainly<MH5046> report<MH5046> all<MH3605> these<MH428> words<MH1697> to the king<MH4428>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Then they asked<MH7592> Baruch<MH1263>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;Tell<MH5046> us, please<MH4994>, how<MH349> did you write<MH3789> all<MH3605> these<MH428> words<MH1697>? <i>Was it</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>at Jeremiah&#8217;s dictation<MH6310>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And Baruch<MH1263> said<MH559> to them, &#8220;He dictated<MH4480, 6310, 7121> all<MH3605> these<MH428> words<MH1697> to me, and I wrote<MH3789> them with ink<MH1773> on the book<MH5612>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Then the officials<MH8269> said<MH559> to Baruch<MH1263>, &#8220;Go<MH1980>, hide<MH5641> yourself, you and Jeremiah<MH3414>, and do not let anyone know<MH3045> where<MH375> you are.&#8221; <p class="hdg">The Scroll Is Burned</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>So they came<MH935> to the king<MH4428> in the courtyard<MH2691a>, but they had deposited<MH6485> the scroll<MH4039> in the chamber<MH3957> of Elishama<MH476> the scribe<MH5613b>; and they reported<MH5046, 241> all<MH3605> the words<MH1697> to the king<MH4428>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> sent<MH7971> Jehudi<MH3065> to get<MH3947> the scroll<MH4039>, and he took<MH3947> it out of the chamber<MH3957> of Elishama<MH476> the scribe<MH5613b>. And Jehudi<MH3065> read<MH7121> it to the king<MH4428> as well as to all<MH3605> the officials<MH8269> who were standing<MH5975> beside<MH4480, 5921> the king<MH4428>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Now the king<MH4428> was sitting<MH3427> in the winter<MH2779> house<MH1004> in the ninth<MH8671> month<MH2320>, with <i>a fire</i> burning<MH1197a> in the brazier<MH254> before<MH6440> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And when Jehudi<MH3065> had read<MH7121> three<MH7969> or four<MH702> columns<MH1817>, <i>the king</i> cut<MH7167> it with a scribe&#8217;s<MH5613b> knife<MH8593> and threw<MH7993> <i>it</i> into the fire<MH784> that was in the brazier<MH254>, until<MH5704> all<MH3605> of the scroll<MH4039> was consumed<MH8552> in the fire<MH784> that was in the brazier<MH254>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Yet the king<MH4428> and all<MH3605> his servants<MH5650> who heard<MH8085> all<MH3605> these<MH428> words<MH1697> did not tremble<MH6342> in<MH6342> fear<MH6342>, nor<MH3808> did they tear<MH7167> their garments<MH899b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Even though<MH1571> Elnathan<MH494>, Delaiah<MH1806>, and Gemariah<MH1587> urged<MH6293> the king<MH4428> not to burn<MH8313> the scroll<MH4039>, he would not listen<MH8085> to them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>And the king<MH4428> commanded<MH6680> Jerahmeel<MH3396> the king&#8217;s<MH4428> son<MH1121>, Seraiah<MH8304> the son<MH1121> of Azriel<MH5837>, and Shelemiah<MH8018> the son<MH1121> of Abdeel<MH5655> to seize<MH3947> Baruch<MH1263> the scribe<MH5613b> and Jeremiah<MH3414> the prophet<MH5030>, but the LORD<MH3068> hid<MH5641> them. <p class="hdg">The Scroll Is Replaced</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Then the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068> came<MH1961> to Jeremiah<MH3414> after<MH310> the king<MH4428> had burned<MH8313> the scroll<MH4039> and the words<MH1697> which<MH834> Baruch<MH1263> had written<MH3789> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>at the dictation<MH6310> of Jeremiah<MH3414>, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>&#8220;Take<MH3947> again<MH7725> another<MH312> scroll<MH4039> and write<MH3789> on it all<MH3605> the previous<MH7223> words<MH1697> that were on the first<MH7223> scroll<MH4039>, which<MH834> Jehoiakim<MH3079> the king<MH4428> of Judah<MH3063> burned<MH8313>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>And concerning<MH5921> Jehoiakim<MH3079> king<MH4428> of Judah<MH3063> you shall say<MH559>, &#8216;This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559>: &#8220;You have burned<MH8313> this<MH2088> scroll<MH4039>, saying<MH559>, &#8216;Why<MH4069> have you written<MH3789> on it <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>that the king<MH4428> of Babylon<MH894> will certainly<MH935> come<MH935> and destroy<MH7843> this<MH2088> land<MH776>, and will make mankind<MH120> and animals<MH929> disappear<MH7673a> from it?&#8217;&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Therefore<MH3651> this<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559> concerning<MH5921> Jehoiakim<MH3079> king<MH4428> of Judah<MH3063>: &#8220;He shall have<MH1961> no<MH3808> one to sit<MH3427> on the throne<MH3678> of David<MH1732>, and his dead<MH5038> body<MH5038> shall be thrown<MH7993> out<MH7993> to the heat<MH2721a> of the day<MH3117> and the frost<MH7140> of the night<MH3915>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>I will also punish<MH6485> him, his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>descendants<MH2233>, and his servants<MH5650> for their wrongdoing<MH5771>, and I will bring<MH935> on them and the inhabitants<MH3427> of Jerusalem<MH3389> and the people<MH376> of Judah<MH3063> all<MH3605> the disaster<MH7463a> that I have declared<MH1696> to them&#8212;but they did not listen<MH8085>.&#8221;&#8217;&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/36-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>Then Jeremiah<MH3414> took<MH3947> another<MH312> scroll<MH4039> and gave<MH5414> it to the scribe<MH5613b> Baruch<MH1263> the son<MH1121> of Neriah<MH5374>, and he wrote<MH3789> on it at the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>dictation<MH6310> of Jeremiah<MH3414> all<MH3605> the words<MH1697> of the book<MH5612> which<MH834> Jehoiakim<MH3079> king<MH4428> of Judah<MH3063> had burned<MH8313> in the fire<MH784>;
