We support multilateralism and a global rules-based order. Today the EU and ASEAN have extensive bilateral ties through trade and investment. There is more potential to elevate the economic ties to the next level. New free trade agreements with individual ASEAN member states are being negotiated. Southeast Asia is located one of the world's busiest shipping routes. It is often where geopolitical interests are high too. <br /><br />Our bilateral relation is getting richer with shared interest on connectivity, climate change, human rights, sustainable development and promotion of regional and global security. In December 2020 the EU and ASEAN elevated their longstanding relationship to becoming Strategic Partners. <br /><br />This legislature the delegation will continue engaging to support democratic values and human rights in the region. <br /><br />Mutual understanding can be fostered through political dialogues and people-to-people exchanges. I want to highlight the parliamentary dimension. We need regular bilateral contacts between Members of the two regions. Bilateral exchanges with parliamentarians are essential and should be fostered. We also need to develop our relations with the ASEAN Interparliamentary Assembly (AIPA). We welcome the positive momentum of the annual Inter-Regional EP-AIPA Dialogues and will work to develop the dialogues further together with AIPA members. <br /><br />I look forward to working together with DASE colleagues and promoting our relations with Southeast Asia. </div><br />Source : <a href="https://www.europarl.europa.eu/privacy-policy/en">© European Union, 2024 - European Parliament was represented by the Delegation for relations with Southeast Asia and ASEAN (DASE), chaired by DASE Chair Daniel Caspary, and the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), represented by delegations from the parliaments of Lao PDR, current AIPA Presidency, Cambodia and Indonesia. AIPA delegation was lead by MP Sanya Praseuth, National Assembly of Lao PDR. The Inter-regional Dialogue Meeting agreed on next steps in further developing the dialogues and discussed matters of common interest in economic, trade and investment cooperation and global and regional security challenges. The delegation was headed by the Chair of DASE, Mr <a href="https://www.europarl.europa.eu/meps/en/28219/DANIEL_CASPARY/home">Daniel CASPARY (EPP, Germany)</a>.</p> <p>European Parliament represented by a delegation of DASE Members and the Parliament of Singapore held the 13th Inter-Parliamentary Meeting on 7 December 2023. The previous Inter-Parliamentary meeting was held in November 2022, in a remote format.</p> <p>The Members of the European Parliament met with the Speaker of the Parliament Mr SEAH Kian Peng, Deputy Speaker Ms Jessica TAN, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Trade and Industry Mr BEH Swan Gin and representatives of the Urban Redevelopment Authority, PSA International (operator of the port of Singapore), EU Member State Ambassadors hosted by the EU Ambassador and the European business community, as well as representatives of academia and civil society.</p> <p>Upon the conclusion of the visit, the Chair of DASE underlined that "Singapore is a key political partner in Southeast Asia, which shares views with the EU on defence of international rule of law and sovereignty of independent nations". He stressed the importance of the national ratifications of the EU-Singapore Investment Protection Agreement (EUSIPA). He said that the first such agreement with ASEAN countries, the EU-Singapore Free Trade Agreement has proven the value of such agreements. He urged for more free trade agreements to be negotiated with Southeast Asian countries following the successful examples of Singapore and Vietnam.</p> <p>"Singapore is an important partner with whom to develop EU-Asia connectivity, and for climate change, foreign affairs and security aspects. DASE visit to Singapore highlights the need for like-minded partners to meet regularly amongst the many security and trading challenges we are facing today. </p> <p>The parliamentary diplomacy represents an irreplaceable dimension in the bilateral agenda. The bilateral relations are dynamic. Singapore is at the forefront of key areas of cooperation as the EU-Singapore Digital Partnership shows. Moreover, Singapore was one of the 15 WTO Members, alongside the European Union, deciding to establish a Multiparty Interim Appeal Arbitration Arrangement (MPIA) to solve trade disputes, in response to the weaknesses of the WTO Appellate Body," said Mr Caspary.</p> <p>"Singapore's location at the main trading routes, its use of advance technologies also make it a key partner in the context of the EU Strategy for Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific and of the EU-ASEAN Strategic Partnership."</p> <p>"We need to complete the Member State ratifications of the bilateral political framework agreement, the EU-Singapore Partnership and Cooperation Agreement, as well," added Mr Caspary, Chair of DASE.</p> <p>During their visit, Members of the European Parliament learnt about the advanced operations of the Port of Singapore, the busiest port in the world in terms of shipping tonnage, with an average 140,000 vessels calling at the port annually. Members also discussed with the city authorities Singapore's redevelopment and transformation. The text adopted in plenary was tabled by the EPP, S&D, Renew, Greens/EFA, ECR, The Left groups and Members.</p><p><br /></p><p>Kem Sokha, the former Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) president was arrested in 2017 over accusations of conspiracy to overthrow Prime Minister Hun Sen and held in arbitrary pre-trial detention until his conditional release into house arrest on 10 September 2018. MEPs call for the unlawful state of emergency in the country to end immediately, for the military's indiscriminate use of force to stop, for the civilian government and parliament to be restored, and for a path towards democracy to be re-established.<br />In addition, the resolution calls on the EU and member states to substantially increase humanitarian aid to the people and refugees of Myanmar, including the Rohingya. MEPs also want the EU to introduce additional targeted sanctions against the Burmese military and its business interests.
