and she said<MH559> to Jacob<MH3290>, “Give<MH3051> me children<MH1121>, or else<MH518, 369> I am going to die<MH4191>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>Then Jacob’s<MH3290> anger<MH639> burned<MH2734> against Rachel<MH7354>, and he said<MH559>, “Am I in<MH8478> the place<MH8478> of<MH8478> God<MH430>, who<MH834> has withheld<MH4513> from you the fruit<MH6529> of the womb<MH990>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Then she said<MH559>, “Here<MH2009> is my female<MH519> slave<MH519> Bilhah<MH1090a>: have<MH935> relations<MH935> with<MH935> her that she may give<MH3205> birth<MH3205> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>on my knees<MH1290>, so that <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>by her I too<MH1571> may obtain<MH1129> a child<MH1129>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>So she gave<MH5414> him her slave<MH8198> Bilhah<MH1090a> as a wife<MH802>, and Jacob<MH3290> had<MH935> relations<MH935> with<MH935> her. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Bilhah<MH1090a> conceived<MH2029> and bore<MH3205> Jacob<MH3290> a son<MH1121>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Then Rachel<MH7354> said<MH559>, “God<MH430> has <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>vindicated<MH1777> me, and has indeed<MH1571> heard<MH8085> my voice<MH6963> and has given<MH5414> me a son<MH1121>.” Therefore<MH5921, 3651> she named<MH7121> him <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>Dan<MH1835>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And Rachel’s<MH7354> slave<MH8198> Bilhah<MH1090a> conceived<MH2029> again<MH5750> and bore<MH3205> Jacob<MH3290> a second<MH8145> son<MH1121>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>So Rachel<MH7354> said<MH559>, “<i>With</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>mighty<MH430> wrestling<MH5319> I have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>wrestled<MH6617> with my sister<MH269>, <i>and</i> I have indeed<MH1571> prevailed<MH3201>.” And she named<MH7121> him Naphtali<MH5321>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>When Leah<MH3812> saw<MH7200> that she had stopped<MH5975> having<MH3205> children<MH3205>, she took<MH3947> her slave<MH8198> Zilpah<MH2153> and gave<MH5414> her to Jacob<MH3290> as a wife<MH802>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And Leah’s<MH3812> slave<MH8198> Zilpah<MH2153> bore<MH3205> Jacob<MH3290> a son<MH1121>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then Leah<MH3812> said<MH559>, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>How fortunate<MH1409>!” So she named<MH7121> him <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>Gad<MH1410>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And Leah’s<MH3812> slave<MH8198> Zilpah<MH2153> bore<MH3205> Jacob<MH3290> a second<MH8145> son<MH1121>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then Leah<MH3812> said<MH559>, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>Happy<MH837> am I! For women<MH1323> will call<MH7121> me happy<MH833>.” So she named<MH7121> him <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>Asher<MH836>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Now in the days<MH3117> of wheat<MH2406> harvest<MH7105a> Reuben<MH7205> went<MH1980> and found<MH4672> mandrake<MH1736> fruits<MH1736> in the field<MH7704>, and brought<MH935> them to his mother<MH517> Leah<MH3812>. Then Rachel<MH7354> said<MH559> to Leah<MH3812>, “Please<MH4994> give<MH5414> me some<MH4480> of your son’s<MH1121> mandrakes<MH1736>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>But she said<MH559> to her, “Is it a small<MH4592> matter<MH4592> for you to take<MH3947> my husband<MH376>? And would you take<MH3947> my son’s<MH1121> mandrakes<MH1736> also<MH1571>?” So Rachel<MH7354> said<MH559>, “Therefore<MH3651> he may sleep<MH7901> with you tonight<MH3915> in<MH8478> return<MH8478> for<MH8478> your son’s<MH1121> mandrakes<MH1736>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>When Jacob<MH3290> came<MH935> in<MH935> from the field<MH7704> in the evening<MH6153>, Leah<MH3812> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> to meet<MH7122> him and said<MH559>, “You must have<MH935> relations<MH935> with<MH935> me, for I have indeed<MH7936> hired<MH7936> you with my son’s<MH1121> mandrakes<MH1736>.” So he slept<MH7901> with her that night<MH3915>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>God<MH430> listened<MH8085> to Leah<MH3812>, and she conceived<MH2029> and bore<MH3205> Jacob<MH3290> a fifth<MH2549> son<MH1121>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Then Leah<MH3812> said<MH559>, “God<MH430> has given<MH5414> me my <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>reward<MH7939>, because<MH834> I gave<MH5414> my slave<MH8198> to my husband<MH376>.” So she named<MH7121> him Issachar<MH3485>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And Leah<MH3812> conceived<MH2029> again<MH5750> and bore<MH3205> a sixth<MH8345> son<MH1121> to Jacob<MH3290>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Then Leah<MH3812> said<MH559>, “God<MH430> has endowed<MH2064> me with a good<MH2896a> gift<MH2065>; finally<MH6471> my husband<MH376> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>will acknowledge<MH2082> me <i>as his wife,</i> because<MH3588> I have borne<MH3205> him six<MH8337a> sons<MH1121>.” So she named<MH7121> him Zebulun<MH2074>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Afterward<MH310> she gave<MH3205> birth<MH3205> to a daughter<MH1323>, and named<MH7121, 8034> her Dinah<MH1783>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Then God<MH430> remembered<MH2142> Rachel<MH7354>, and God<MH430> listened<MH8085> to her and opened<MH6605a> her womb<MH7358>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>So she conceived<MH2029> and gave<MH3205> birth<MH3205> to a son<MH1121>, and said<MH559>, “God<MH430> has taken<MH622> away<MH622> my disgrace<MH2781>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And she named<MH7121, 8034> him Joseph<MH3130>, saying<MH559>, “May the LORD<MH3068> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>give<MH3254> me another<MH312> son<MH1121>.” <p class="hdg">Jacob Prospers</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Now it came<MH1961> about<MH1961>, when<MH3512c> Rachel<MH7354> had given<MH3205> birth<MH3205> to Joseph<MH3130>, that Jacob<MH3290> said<MH559> to Laban<MH3837a>, “Send<MH7971> me away<MH7971>, so that I may go<MH1980> to my own place<MH4725> and to my own country<MH776>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Give<MH5414> <i>me</i> my wives<MH802> and my children<MH3206> for whom<MH834> I have served<MH5647> you, and let me go<MH1980>; for you yourself<MH859> know<MH3045> my service<MH5656> which<MH834> I have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>rendered<MH5647> you.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>But Laban<MH3837a> said<MH559> to him, “If<MH518> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>it pleases<MH4672, 2580> you at<MH4994> all<MH4994>, <i>stay with me;</i> I have determined<MH5172> by<MH5172> divination<MH5172> that the LORD<MH3068> has blessed<MH1288> me on your account<MH1558>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>He <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>continued<MH559>, “Name<MH5344a> me your wages<MH7939>, and I will give<MH5414> them.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>But <i>Jacob</i> said<MH559> to him, “You yourself<MH859> know<MH3045> how<MH854, 834> I have served<MH5647> you and how<MH854, 834> your livestock<MH4735> have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>fared<MH1961> with me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>For you had<MH1961> little<MH4592> before<MH6440> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>I came, and it has <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>increased<MH6555> to a multitude<MH7230>, and the LORD<MH3068> has blessed<MH1288> you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>wherever I turned<MH7272>. But now<MH6258>, when<MH4970> shall I provide<MH6213a> for my own household<MH1004> also<MH1571>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>So he said<MH559>, “What<MH4100> shall I give<MH5414> you?” And Jacob<MH3290> said<MH559>, “You shall not give<MH5414> me anything<MH3972>. If<MH518> you will do<MH6213a> this<MH2088> <i>one</i> thing<MH1697> for me, I will again<MH7725> pasture<MH7462a> <i>and</i> keep<MH8104> your flock<MH6629>: <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>let me pass<MH5674a> through your entire<MH3605> flock<MH6629> today<MH3117>, removing<MH5493> from there<MH8033> every<MH3605> speckled<MH5348> or spotted<MH2921> sheep<MH7716> and every<MH3605> black<MH2345> sheep<MH7716> among the lambs<MH3775>, and the spotted<MH2921> or speckled<MH5348> among the goats<MH5795>; and <i>those</i> shall be my wages<MH7939>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>So my <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>honesty<MH6666> will answer<MH6030a> for me later<MH4279, 3117>, when<MH3588> you come<MH935> concerning<MH5921> my <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>wages<MH7939>. Every<MH3605> one<MH3605> that is not speckled<MH5348> or spotted<MH2921> among the goats<MH5795>, or black<MH2345> among the lambs<MH3775>, <i>if found</i> with me, will be considered stolen<MH1589>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>Laban<MH3837a> said<MH559>, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[x]</a></span>Good<MH2005>, let it be according to your word<MH1697>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>So he removed<MH5493> on that day<MH3117> the striped<MH6124> or spotted<MH2921> male<MH8495> goats<MH8495>, and all<MH3605> the speckled<MH5348> or spotted<MH2921> female<MH5795> goats<MH5795>, every<MH3605> one<MH3605> with white<MH3836> on it, and all<MH3605> the black<MH2345> ones<MH2345> among the sheep<MH3775>, and put<MH5414> them in the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[y]</a></span>care<MH3027> of his sons<MH1121>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>And he put<MH7760> <i>a distance of</i> three<MH7969> days’<MH3117> journey<MH1870> between<MH996> himself and Jacob<MH3290>, and Jacob<MH3290> fed<MH7462a> the rest<MH3498> of Laban’s<MH3837a> flocks<MH6629>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>Then Jacob<MH3290> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[z]</a></span>took<MH3947> fresh<MH3892> rods<MH4731> of poplar<MH3839>, almond<MH3869>, and plane<MH6196> trees<MH6196>, and peeled<MH6478> white<MH3836> stripes<MH6479> in them, exposing<MH4286> the white<MH3836> that <i>was</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[aa]</a></span>in the rods<MH4731>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>He set<MH3322> the rods<MH4731> which<MH834> he had peeled<MH6478> in front<MH5227> of the flocks<MH6629> in the drinking<MH7298a> troughs<MH7298a>, <i>that is,</i> in the watering<MH4325> channels<MH8268> where<MH834> the flocks<MH6629> came<MH935> to drink<MH8354>; and they mated<MH3179> when they came<MH935> to drink<MH8354>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>So the flocks<MH6629> mated<MH3179> by the rods<MH4731>, and the flocks<MH6629> delivered<MH3205> striped<MH6124>, speckled<MH5348>, and spotted<MH2921> <i>offspring.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>Then Jacob<MH3290> separated<MH6504> the lambs<MH3775>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ab]</a></span>made<MH5414> the flocks<MH6629> face<MH6440> toward<MH413> the striped<MH6124> and all<MH3605> the black<MH2345> in the flock<MH6629> of Laban<MH3837a>; and he put<MH7896> his own herds<MH5739> apart<MH905>, and did not put<MH7896> them with Laban’s<MH3837a> flock<MH6629>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/30-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>Moreover, whenever<MH3605> the stronger<MH7194> of the flock<MH6629> were mating<MH3179>, Jacob<MH3290> would place<MH7760> the rods<MH4731> in the sight<MH5869> of the flock<MH6629> in the drinking<MH7298a> troughs<MH7298a>, so that they would mate<MH3179> by the rods<MH4731>;
