The term is used both literally and metaphorically throughout the Scriptures, reflecting different aspects of faith, obedience, and divine support.

1. Stay as Remaining or Abiding

The idea of staying in a place or remaining steadfast is a recurring theme in the Bible. In the Old Testament, the Israelites were often instructed to stay in a particular location as part of God's plan. For example, in Exodus 14:13, Moses tells the people, "Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the LORD’s salvation, which He will accomplish for you today." Here, staying firm is associated with witnessing God's deliverance.

In the New Testament, Jesus emphasizes the importance of abiding in Him. In John 15:4 , He states, "Remain in Me, and I will remain in you. Just as no branch can bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me." This call to remain or stay in Christ is central to the Christian life, highlighting the necessity of a continuous, living relationship with the Savior.

2. Stay as Support or Upholding

The term "stay" is also used to describe support or upholding, often in the context of God's sustaining power. In Isaiah 41:10 , God reassures His people, "Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will surely help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand." Here, God's promise to uphold His people serves as a source of comfort and strength.

Similarly, in Psalm 18:18 , David acknowledges God's support during times of trouble: "They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the LORD was my support." This verse illustrates the divine assistance and stability provided by God to those who trust in Him.

3. Stay as Endurance or Perseverance

The concept of staying can also imply endurance or perseverance, particularly in the face of trials. James 1:12 speaks to this aspect: "Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him." Here, staying the course through difficulties is linked to spiritual reward and maturity.

The Apostle Paul also encourages believers to stay firm in their faith. In 1 Corinthians 16:13 , he exhorts, "Be on the alert. Stand firm in the faith. Be men of courage. Be strong." This call to steadfastness is a reminder of the need for resilience and courage in the Christian walk.

4. Stay as a Command or Instruction

In some instances, "stay" is used as a direct command or instruction. For example, in Genesis 22:5 , Abraham tells his servants, "Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you." This instruction is part of the narrative of Abraham's test of faith, where staying is part of obedience to God's unfolding plan.

In the New Testament, Jesus instructs His disciples to stay in Jerusalem until they receive the Holy Spirit. In Acts 1:4 , it is recorded, "And while they were gathered together, He commanded them: 'Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift the Father promised, which you have heard Me discuss.'" This directive underscores the importance of waiting on God's timing and provision.

Overall, the biblical concept of "stay" encompasses themes of abiding, support, endurance, and obedience, each reflecting a facet of the believer's relationship with God and the call to live faithfully according to His will.
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary
1. From one derivation it has the meaning "to stand" and so "to continue in one place" (Genesis 8:10 Leviticus 13:23, 28, etc.), "to forbear to act" (Ruth 1:13), "to rest," "to be trustful" (King James Version, the English Revised Version Isaiah 10:20; see below). Transitively it means "to cause to stay," "to hinder" (Daniel 4:35, etc.), and "stay" as a noun means "cessation of progress" (Leviticus 13:5, 37), "sojourn." From the second derivation the verb means "to support" (Exodus 17:12 1 Kings 22:35 Songs 2:5), while the noun means "a support" (1 Kings 10:19 Isaiah 3:1, etc.). the American Standard Revised Version has judged obsolete "stay on" in the sense "trust in," and for "stay" has substituted "lean" in Isaiah 10:20 and "rely" in 30:12; 31:01:00; 50:10, although "stay themselves upon" (= "support themselves by") has been kept in 48:2. Otherwise the Revised Version (British and American) has made few alterations. But such as have been made ("tarry ye" for "stay yourselves" in Isaiah 29:9 and the American Standard Revised Version "restrain" for "stay" in Job 37:4) could have been carried farther with advantage.

Burton Scott Easton

Greek
3306. meno -- to stay, abide, remain
... to stay, abide, remain.
