Almost never without her sketchpad, Okubo recorded her images of drama, humiliation, and everyday struggle. While interned, Okubo taught art to children and later entered a magazine contest with her drawing of a camp guard. Becoming nationally recognized, Okubo received numerous awards, among which included the 1984 <a href="/wiki/American_Book_Award" class="mw-redirect" title="American Book Award">American Book Award</a><sup id="cite_ref-Nash_-_Mine_Okubo:_Celebrating_Art_4-4" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Nash_-_Mine_Okubo:_Celebrating_Art-4"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>4<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> for <i>Citizen 13660</i>.
