and if<MG1487> a son<MG5207>, then<MG2532> an heir<MG2818> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>through<MG1223> God<MG2316>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/4-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>However<MG235> at that time<MG5119>, when you did not know<MG3609a> God<MG2316>, you were slaves<MG1398> to those<MG3588> which by nature<MG5449> are not gods<MG2316>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/4-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>But now<MG3568> that you have come to know<MG1097> God<MG2316>, or<MG1161> rather<MG3123> to be known<MG1097> by God<MG2316>, how<MG4459> is it that you turn<MG1994> back<MG1994> again<MG3825> to the weak<MG772> and worthless<MG4434> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>elementary<MG4747> principles<MG4747>, to which<MG3739> you want<MG2309> to be enslaved<MG1398> all<MG509> over<MG509> again<MG3825>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/4-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>You meticulously<MG3906> observe<MG3906> days<MG2250> and months<MG3376> and seasons<MG2540> and years<MG1763>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/4-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>I fear<MG5399> for you, that perhaps<MG4458> I have labored<MG2872> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>over<MG1519> you in vain<MG1500>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/4-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>I beg<MG1189a> of you, brothers<MG80> <i>and sisters,</i> become<MG1096> as I <i>am,</i> for I also<MG2532> <i>have become</i> as you <i>are.</i> You have done<MG91> me no<MG3762> wrong<MG91>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/4-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>but you know<MG3609a> that it was because<MG1223> of a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>bodily<MG4561> illness<MG769> that I preached<MG2097> the gospel<MG2097> to you the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>first<MG4387> time<MG4387>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/4-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>and you did not despise<MG1848> that which<MG3986> was<MG3986> a<MG3986> trial<MG3986> to you in my <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>bodily<MG4561> condition<MG4561>, nor<MG3761> express<MG1609> contempt<MG1609>, but you received<MG1209> me as an angel<MG32a> of God<MG2316>, as Christ<MG5547> Jesus<MG2424> <i>Himself.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/4-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Where<MG4226> then<MG3767> is <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>that sense<MG3108> of<MG3108> blessing<MG3108> you had? For I testify<MG3140> about you that, if<MG1487> possible<MG1415>, you would have torn<MG1846> out<MG1846> your eyes<MG3788> and given<MG1325> them to me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/4-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>So<MG5620> have I become<MG1096> your enemy<MG2190> by <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>telling<MG226> you the<MG226> truth<MG226>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/4-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>They eagerly<MG2206> seek<MG2206> you, not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>in a commendable<MG2573> way<MG2573>, but they want<MG2309> to shut<MG1576> you out<MG1576> so<MG2443> that<MG2443> you will seek<MG2206> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/4-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>But it is good<MG2570> always<MG3842> to be eagerly<MG2206> sought<MG2206> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>in a commendable<MG2570> way<MG2570>, and not only<MG3440> when<MG1722> I am<MG3918b> present<MG3918b> with you. <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/4-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>My children<MG5043>, with whom<MG3739> I am<MG5605> again<MG3825> in<MG5605> labor<MG5605> until<MG3360> Christ<MG5547> is formed<MG3445> in you— <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/4-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>but I could wish<MG2309> to be present<MG3918b> with you now<MG737> and to change<MG236> my <i>tone of</i> voice<MG5456>, for I am<MG639> at<MG639> a<MG639> loss<MG639> about<MG1722> you! <p class="hdg">Slave and Free</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/4-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Tell<MG3004> me, you who want<MG2309> to be under<MG5259> law<MG3551>, do you not listen<MG191> to the Law<MG3551>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/4-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>For it is written<MG1125> that Abraham<MG11> had<MG2192> two<MG1417> sons<MG5207>, one<MG1520> by the slave<MG3814> woman<MG3814> and one<MG1520> by the free<MG1658> woman<MG1658>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/4-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>But the son by the slave<MG3814> woman<MG3814> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>was born<MG1080> according<MG2596> to the flesh<MG4561>, and the son by the free<MG1658> woman<MG1658> through<MG1223> the promise<MG1860>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/4-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>This<MG3748> is speaking<MG238> allegorically<MG238>, for these<MG3778> <i>women</i> are two<MG1417> covenants<MG1242>: one<MG1520> <i>coming</i> from Mount<MG3735> Sinai<MG4614> giving<MG1080> birth<MG1080> to<MG1080> children<MG1080> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>who are to be slaves<MG1397>; <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>she is Hagar<MG28>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/4-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> this<MG3588> Hagar<MG28> is Mount<MG3735> Sinai<MG4614> in Arabia<MG688> and corresponds<MG4960> to the present<MG3568> Jerusalem<MG2419>, for she is enslaved<MG1398> with her children<MG5043>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/4-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>But the Jerusalem<MG2419> above<MG507> is free<MG1658>; <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>she is our mother<MG3384>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/4-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>For it is written<MG1125>: <p class="indent1stline">“REJOICE<MG2165>, INFERTILE<MG4723> ONE, YOU WHO DO NOT GIVE<MG5088> BIRTH<MG5088>; <t><p class="indent1">BREAK<MG4486> FORTH<MG4486> AND SHOUT<MG994>, YOU WHO ARE<MG5605> NOT IN<MG5605> LABOR<MG5605>; <t><p class="indent1">FOR THE CHILDREN<MG5043> OF THE DESOLATE<MG2048> ONE <i>ARE</i> MORE<MG4183> NUMEROUS<MG4183> <t><p class="indent1">THAN<MG2228> <i>THOSE</i> OF THE ONE WHO HAS<MG2192> A HUSBAND<MG435>.” <A><span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/4-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>And you, brothers<MG80> <i>and sisters,</i> like<MG2596> Isaac<MG2464>, are children<MG5043> of promise<MG1860>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/4-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>But as at that time<MG5119> the <i>son</i> who was born<MG1080> according<MG2596> to the flesh<MG4561> persecuted<MG1377> the one <i>who was born</i> according<MG2596> to the Spirit<MG4151>, so<MG3779> it is even<MG2532> now<MG3568>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/4-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>But what<MG5101> does the Scripture<MG1124> say<MG3004>?
