This approach seems, in fact, relevant to overcoming two of the main structural biases of migration studies in the social sciences, which are particularly noticeable in French historiography: on the one hand, the imbalance between the attention paid to the points of arrival of migratory flows rather than their points of departure and the reasons that prompted these departures; and, on the other hand, the focus of research on major “migratory waves” (European migrations of the 1880s-1920s, post-colonial migrations of the 1960s, the current migratory crisis), rather than on more modest or marginal phenomena, whose invisibility has been further reinforced by such research logics.

The aim of our proposal is to reread the main macro- and meso-analytical hypotheses formulated from the observation of major emigration flows (push and pull factors, logics of “channels”, “diasporas” and “networks”, political regulation of migratory flows) in the light of these little-explored fields of migration studies, since they concern communities generally deemed as secondary or of little significance. By examining migratory experiences that have taken place off the beaten path, we hope to take a fresh look at the agency of migrants, their decision-making processes and the resources they can mobilize to design and implement their migratory projects in contexts that are presumably more uncertain, risky or adventurous. Along the way, we'll also be shedding light on singular migratory itineraries, connecting little-studied departure, transit and reception areas.

In order to do this, the symposium proposes to conduct its discussions within a framework delimited by the two postulates that have determined the program’s approach from the outset. On the one hand, we wish to enable a dialogue between a wide variety of contributions, by submitting them to a unified and coherent questionnaire that will enable a comparative analysis of the empirical data collected. The questionnaire is based on three main questions: to determine the social profile - gender, geographical origin, socio-cultural background - of individuals who migrate “off the beaten path”; to identify the institutional, economic, social, cultural and cognitive resources they can mobilize to define and implement their projects; and finally, to question the historical dynamics of the phenomena observed, to determine whether they have evolved into more massive migratory channels and currents, or whether they have remained in an embryonic state. To answer these questions, the two methodological approaches traditionally used in migration studies can be mobilized: the micro-analytical approach, based on the collection of migrants' testimonials (written sources from private archives for historians, literary accounts and oral interviews for social science researchers); the macro-analytical approach, based on the use of statistical or institutional sources. On the other hand, we have chosen to focus our observations and discussions on a strictly defined terrain: that of the century that preceded, between 1750 and 1850, the European “great migrations” of the second half of the 19th century. This century, which coincides with the Imperial Meridian, has been identified in historical literature as a period marked by the opening of “new migratory horizons” for Europeans who had hitherto either been deprived of the possibility of emigrating outside Europe, or who could only do so in “privileged” or “constrained” contexts - two notions that also deserve to be discussed and clarified.

The following points should therefore be examined in particular:

- the perception that Europeans of the time had of the new opportunities arising from the dismantling of the first American colonial empires and the emergence of new migratory possibilities towards Africa or Asia

- the social profiles of the individuals who were the first to embark on these new migratory adventures

- the knowledge, networks and institutional support they were able to mobilize to help them prepare their projects

- the diversity of motivations weighing on the candidates for migration, whether strictly personal and familial, economic (search for work or prospects of improving one's social condition) or political (escape from religious and political persecution) or, more likely, whether they resulted from combinations articulating several of these factors in the determination of “auspices” favorable to migration (Rosental, 1999).

- the question of migration governance, implemented by sovereign powers (States, empires, communities), which constituted a framework that could be either encouraging or restrictive, but which was rarely neutral, and with which migrants therefore had to reckon in carrying out their projects

- finally, the relationship between the “pioneering” experiences thus highlighted and the more massive migratory flows that already existed, or were beginning to be structured, at that time and over the following decades, and, more specifically, the question of the attitude adopted by the pioneers towards the deployment of these flows.

While the subject matter and the fields covered by the symposium are deliberately circumscribed from a chronological point of view, the scientific committee will also warmly welcome any contribution dealing with another era or other migrant communities, including social science studies shedding light on very contemporary experiences, whenever they are likely to feed, in a comparative approach, reflection on the concepts and questions put forward by the symposium.

Submission guidelines

The conference languages will be French, English, Spanish and Italian.

Pertanto, sarà opportuno esaminare in modo particolare i seguenti punti:
