His name is often interpreted to mean "a stranger there," reflecting Moses' life in exile. Gershom's account and lineage are significant in understanding the family dynamics of Moses, the great leader and prophet of Israel.

Biblical References:

1. Birth and Naming: Gershom's birth is recorded in the Book of Exodus. After Moses fled from Egypt to Midian, he married Zipporah, the daughter of Jethro, the priest of Midian. Gershom was born during Moses' time in Midian. The Bible states, "She gave birth to a son, and Moses named him Gershom, saying, 'I have become a foreigner in a foreign land'" (Exodus 2:22). This name reflects Moses' sense of alienation and his status as a sojourner.

2. Family Context: Gershom had a younger brother named Eliezer. The family of Moses, including Gershom, played a role in the narrative of the Exodus, although Gershom himself is not prominently featured in the dramatic events of the liberation from Egypt.

3. Role in Israelite Society: While Gershom does not have a significant role in the major events of the Exodus, his descendants are noted in the genealogies of the Levites. In 1 Chronicles 23:15-16, it is recorded, "The sons of Moses: Gershom and Eliezer. The descendants of Gershom: Shebuel was the first." This indicates that Gershom's lineage continued to hold a place within the Levitical order, which was responsible for religious duties and the care of the tabernacle.

4. Priestly Lineage: Gershom's descendants are sometimes associated with the priestly functions, although the primary priestly line is through Aaron, Moses' brother. In Judges 18:30, there is a mention of a "Jonathan, son of Gershom, the son of Moses," who served as a priest for the tribe of Dan. This passage, however, is subject to textual variations and interpretations, with some manuscripts referring to "Manasseh" instead of "Moses."

5. Legacy and Interpretation: Gershom's life and legacy are often viewed through the lens of his father's mission and the broader narrative of the Israelites. His name and the circumstances of his birth serve as a reminder of Moses' journey and the theme of exile and return that is prevalent throughout the biblical narrative.

Gershom's account, though not extensively detailed in the Scriptures, contributes to the understanding of Moses' personal life and the continuation of his family line within the context of Israel's history. His presence in the genealogies underscores the importance of family heritage and the fulfillment of God's promises through successive generations.
Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary
Gershom
a stranger here
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Gershom
(a stranger or exile).

The first-born son of Moses and Zipporah. The only details of his life contained in the Pentateuch are the account of his circumcision (Exodus 4:25), and his remaining under the care of Jethro, while Moses was in Egypt leading the Exodus. His descendants were numbered among the tribes of Levi (1 Chronicles 23:14). One of them apparently was the Jonathan who officiated as priest of the idolatrous sanctuary at Dan, and whose descendants held the office until the captivity. The Massoretic Text inserts a suspended nun, "n," in the name of Moses (mosheh), causing it to be lead Manasseh, for the purpose, according to tradition, of disguising the name out of respect for the revered Lawgiver.
