Fifty people died in Florida due to the storm and \u003ca href=\"https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/billions/events/US/1980-2023?disasters[]=tropical-cyclone\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eNCEI’s Billion-Dollar Weather and Climate Disasters\u003c/a\u003e tool has the cost of the storm at $30.2 billion (2023 U.S. dollars). According to the National Weather Service, the storm caused catastrophic damage from wind and storm surge, particularly in the Panama City Beach to Mexico Beach to Cape San Blas areas. The storm surge inundation heights produced by Michael were estimated at 9–14 ft above ground level from just southeast of Tyndall Air Force Base to Port St. Joe in Bay and Gulf Counties, respectively, with the highest inundation occurring in Mexico Beach. There was significant beach erosion. ETOPO 2022 provides accurate topographic and bathymetric data to predict water movement across global ocean surfaces, which is vital for modeling the movement of tsunami waves across ocean basins. The CRMs are regional-scale DEMs that provide refined resolutions of the seafloor in the U.S. Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ) to more accurately model the movement and height of the waves as depths become shallower near the coastline.
