and they questioned Him, saying, "Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath?" that they might accuse Him. <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And He said to them <FR>"What man of you who shall have one sheep; and, if this should fall into a pit on the sabbath, will not lay hold of it, and raise <i>it</i> up?<Fr> <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span><FR>How much better, therefore, <i>is</i> a man than a sheep! Therefore, it is lawful to do well on the sabbath."<Fr> <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then saith He to the man, <FR>"Stretch forth your hand."<Fr> And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole as the other. <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>But the Pharisees, having gone out, held a consultation against Him, that they might destroy Him.<p> <A name="16"></a><p class="hdg">God’s Chosen Servant<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>But Jesus, knowing it, withdrew thence; and many followed Him, and He healed them all. <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And He charged them, that they should not make Him known; <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying,<p> <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>"Behold, My servant Whom I chose, My Beloved, in Whom My soul delighted. I will put My Spirit upon Him, and He will declare judgment to the gentiles.<p> <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>He will not strive, nor cry aloud; nor will any one hear His voice in the streets:<p> <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>A bruised reed will He not break, and a smoking flax will He not quench, till He send forth judgment unto victory;<p> <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>And in His name will the gentiles hope."<p> <A name="23"></a><p class="hdg">A House Divided<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/3.htm#20">Mark 3:20–27</a>; <a href ="../luke/11.htm#14">Luke 11:14–23</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Then there was brought to Him a demoniac, blind, and dumb; and He healed him, so that the dumb man spake and saw. <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And all the multitudes were amazed, and said, Can this be the Son of David?" <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>But the Pharisees, hearing it, said, "This Man doth not cast out the demons, except by Beelzebub, prince of the demons."<p> <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And, knowing their thoughts, He said to them, <FR>"Every kingdom, divided against itself, is brought to naught; and every city or house, divided against itself, shall not stand.<Fr> <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span><FR>And, if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how, then, shall his kingdom stand<Fr> <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span><FR>And, if I by Beelzebub cast out the demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore, they shall be your judges.<Fr> <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span><FR>But, if I by the Spirit of God cast out the demons, then the Kingdom of God came upon you unexpectedly.<Fr> <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span><FR>Or how can one enter into the house of the strong man, and seize upon his goods, unless he first bind the strong man? And then he will plunder his house.<Fr><p> <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span><FR>He that is not with Me is against Me; and he that gathers not with Me scatters.<Fr><p> <A name="32"></a><p class="hdg">The Unpardonable Sin<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/3.htm#28">Mark 3:28–30</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span><FR>Therefore, I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven to men, but the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit shall not be forgiven.<Fr> <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span><FR>And whosoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whosoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven, neither in this age nor in that which is to come.<Fr><p> <A name="34"></a><p class="hdg">Good and Bad Fruit<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../luke/6.htm#43">Luke 6:43–45</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span><FR>Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree worthless and its fruit worthless; for from the fruit the tree is known.<Fr> <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span><FR>"Broods of vipers! how can ye speak good things, being <i>yourselves</i> evil? For, out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.<Fr> <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span><FR>The good man, out of his good treasure, puts forth good things; and the evil man, out of his evil treasure, puts forth evil things.<Fr> <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span><FR>And I say to you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account concerning it in the day of judgment;<Fr> <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span><FR>for by your words you shall be justified, and by your words you shall be condemned."<Fr><p> <A name="39"></a><p class="hdg">The Sign of Jonah<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../luke/11.htm#29">Luke 11:29–32</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered Him, saying, "Teacher, we wish to see a sign from Thee." <A name="40"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>And He, answering, said to them, <FR>"An evil and adulterous generation is seeking after a sign; and no sign shall be given to it, except the sign of Jonah the prophet.<Fr> <A name="41"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span><FR>For, as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so shall the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.<Fr> <A name="42"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span><FR>"The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation, and will condemn it; because they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and, behold, a greater than Jonah is here.<Fr> <A name="43"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span><FR>"A queen of the south will rise up in the judgment with this generation, and will condemn it; because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.<Fr><p> <A name="44"></a><p class="hdg">An Unclean Spirit Returns<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../luke/11.htm#24">Luke 11:24–26</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span><FR>"But, when the unclean spirit goes out from the man, it passes through waterless places, seeking rest, and finds it not.<Fr> <A name="45"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span><FR>Then it says, 'I will return into my house whence I came out;' and, having come, it finds <i>it</i> unoccupied, swept, and adorned.<Fr> <A name="46"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/12-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span><FR>Then it goes and takes along with itself seven other spirits more evil than itself, and, entering in, they dwell there; and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first.
