While recent advances in technology have improved fracking by leaps and bounds, fracking itself can be traced back to the Civil War.

In 1862, Col. Edward A.L. Roberts was on the battlefield in Fredericksburg, Virginia when he witnessed the effects of Confederate soldiers firing explosive artillery shells into a narrow canal that was an obstruction on the battlefield. This sparked an idea in Roberts’ mind of how explosives could be used as a method to increase oil production in wells with what he described as superincumbent fluid tamping.

In 1866, Col. Roberts was issued U.S. Patent No. 59,936 for what was described as the Roberts exploding torpedo. The torpedo was basically an iron casing containing 15 to 20 pounds of gunpowder. In 1866, Roberts conducted a series of experiments where his newly patented torpedoes were lowered in wells. Then the boreholes were filled with water, hence the superincumbent fluid tamping, to concentrate the concussion of the explosion and increase the “fracturing” of the formation. The torpedoes were then detonated via a wire running from the shell to the surface.

Roberts’ experiments were wildly successful. Oil production in some of the wells increased by 1,200% within a week of the shell detonation or “exploding shot”. This gave birth to the Roberts Petroleum Torpedo Company.

Roberts’ company charged from $100 to $200 for each torpedo detonation. In addition to the charge per torpedo, the company also received a royalty of 1/15 of the profits generated by the procedure. The exploding shot method was used for decades in oil production.

As you can see, fracking is not some newfangled technology, but has been improved upon to what it is today. These advances have led to the shale revolution which has been a saving grace for the American economy.

>> RELATED – The Fracking Groundwater Cover-Up

>> RELATED – Fracking Bans in Texas Outlawed

The Fracking Groundwater Cover-Up

SEOadmin

Oil and Gas Current Events

Permian Basin Oil News

Uncategorized

Fracking

Hydraulic Fracturing

Hydraulic fracturing (commonly known as fracking) is a common technique used in ...

Hydraulic fracturing (commonly known as fracking) is a common technique used in oil and natural gas exploration and development in the United States. In fact, it is estimated that over one million wells have been fracked either hydraulically or by other methods in oil and natural gas basins across the nation since the 1940’s. It has just been in the past ten years or so that the use of fracking has sparked a heated debate as to whether or not it is safe for groundwater sources in proximity to the wells.

Environmentalists, green energy advocates, climate change proponents, and Hollywood have viciously attacked fracking, but the question remains, is their demonization of fracking warranted? Does fracking contaminate groundwater sources?

In 2014, a landmark 18-month federal study on hydraulic fracturing by the Department of Energy was conducted at a site in western Pennsylvania. Scientists used tracer fluids, seismic monitoring, and an array of other tests to look for problems created by the fracking process. The study resulted in one of the most detailed reports to date as to the effects of fracking on the surrounding rock structures and groundwater, but found no evidence of contaminated groundwater.

An EPA five-year study concerning the potential impacts of hydraulic fracturing for oil and gas on drinking water resources in the United States, “found no evidence for direct communication with shallow drinking water wells due to upward migration from shale horizons.” (page 5) However, the study did find that, while groundwater contamination was not coming from fracking, contamination could come from surface spills.

A major three-year study of fracking and its impact on local water supplies was recently completed by a team of researchers at the University of Cincinnati. This study specifically targeted the Utica shale region of Ohio. The results of the study showed that there was no evidence of groundwater contamination from hydraulic fracturing.

The problem with this study is that the results are not being released to the public. Dr. Amy Townsend-Small, an assistant professor at the University Of Cincinnati Department Of Geology and the leader of the study said, “I am really sad to say this, but some of our funders, the groups that had given us funding in the past, were a little disappointed in our results. They feel that fracking is scary and so they were hoping our data could point to a reason to ban it.” As more information comes out about this study, we find that it was funded by “ban fracking” activists who are also behind the delay in the release of the findings of the study.

On the flip side, there was a study in Pavillion, Wyoming on the town’s water supply where fracking was claimed to have been linked to groundwater contamination. The interesting thing about that study is that it is quickly becoming one of the most quoted sources on the internet regarding fracking and groundwater contamination. You’ll find stories on it on Think Progress, Greenpeace, EcoWatch, Inside Climate News, The Huffington Post, The Daily Kos, and even across the pond at The Guardian. There is also a petition on MoveOn.org requesting that President Obama and EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy reopen fracking investigations in Pavillion, Wyoming and other areas. If you are familiar with these organizations, you might notice a common thread.

Why would studies that find no evidence of fracking causing ground water contamination get the results buried, but studies that link fracking to water contamination get published and quoted far and wide? Forbes.com offers a possible reason in “Russians Financed The U.S. Anti-Fracking Movement.” Surprisingly, the New York Times backs up the Forbes story with one of their own, “Russian Money Suspected Behind Fracking Protests.”

So the debate rages on as to whether or not fracking causes groundwater contamination. Both sides have studies supporting their claims. However, may we offer this in closing – instead of jumping on a particular study as the end-all-be-all, perhaps we should dig deeper into who is funding the study and what are their motives, and also who is conducting the study and ascertain as to whether or not they have an agenda as well. Maybe some “independent and unbiased” studies would be in order.

Memorial Day 2016 – May 30
Despite targeting a deeper formation, mechanical issues prevented the original operator from reaching their objective and they chose to complete the well to access the upper sands with smaller reserve potential. Midyear-2015, Aresco joined a lead operator and its capital partners and embarked on a targeted well reentry program, which has resulted in a significant new field discovery. As of March 22nd, the well has produced over 500,000 MMCFG.

“The Tuscaloosa Sands project had everything we look for in a quality acquisition: solid, proved geology, extensive analogue data, multiple drill sites, and prodigious production potential,” said Brandon Laxton, President and Founder of Aresco LP and Aresco Operating. “By sidetracking and deepening the existing wellbore at a fraction of the cost of new drilling, we’ve created an opportunity for an exceptional return on investment. We’re excited about the results and look forward to continuing to jointly execute the development program for this prospect area. It has been a long journey to reach this point. We celebrate this victory with all of those who paved the way early on along with those who were a part of getting us to where we are today.”

Aresco’s Tuscaloosa Sands prospect features up to approximately twenty-two in-field drilling locations with gross estimated reserves of 726 billion cubic feet of gas and 36.3 million barrels of oil.

About Aresco LP

Aresco LP is a privately held Dallas-based exploration and production company actively engaged in developmental drilling, mineral leasing, and production acquisitions in conventional and unconventional oil plays throughout Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Louisiana, and the entire Gulf Coast region. Instead they are living up to the wildcatter’s reputation of being creative problem solvers by making moves to see them through this current rough spell.

The crude-rich monarchy of Saudi Arabia has been playing hardball at the head of the table of oil-producing Middle Eastern states, choosing not to cut production – this despite the effects the recent oil glut has had on global oil pricing. With the global benchmark Brent crude down near $30/b in recent weeks, the Saudis are betting the bank that the surplus in supply will continue to play havoc with the energy markets, thereby testing the resolve of their North American production counterparts while also effectively choking out a few of their own associates, such as Venezuela. Add to this the fact that the first shipments of Iranian oil have now reached the European market, the already Middle Eastern supply glut is set to grow. It is estimated that the Iranians are on pace to contribute an estimated 3 million barrels per day (bpd) to global production. Given these factors, one has to wonder how Permian producers can stay in the game.

But if the usual methods of improving margins in a challenging market such as cutting CAPEX, etc. do not effectively fix the bottom line, what else can be done? Recent headlines prove that West Texas operators are getting creative on the financial-side of things to help withstand supply-side pressures. One solution to help them batten down the hatches, at least in the short to near term, appears to be selling over $2 billion in equity.

Diamondback Energy Inc. launched a 4 million-share sale a week after Pioneer Natural Resources Co. issued and sold 12 million shares of their own on in early January 2016. Pioneer explained their move as an effort to fund “…general corporate purposes, including continuing to actively develop its acreage position in the Spraberry/Wolfcamp play in West Texas while maintaining a strong balance sheet during the current period of low commodity prices.”

In addition to these moves there is also outside money flowing into the industry via private equity firms. For example, Invictus Energy LLC is a new producer being financed by Kayne Anderson Capital Advisors LP to the tune of $150 million. They look to work the Permian Basin as well as the Eagle Ford Shale play.

According to David Deckelbaum of KeyBanc Capital Markets Inc., producers have been looking to alternative taps from which to draw cash rather than taking a sizable loss through asset sales or accumulating significant debt. “In a world where the oil price can break you, taking on debt is an absolute no-no.”

Results

But how are these producers performing on the heels of their equity moves? Pioneer has bettered the oil market which saw a 13 percent fall by reporting only a 2.3 percent drop since its January 5 offering. Likewise, Diamondback has surged more than 20 percent since its January 13 issuance.

Additionally, predictions on future demand are understandably positive, such as British Petroleum’s 2035 Energy Outlook, which forecasts that global demand for energy will increase by 34%, driven primarily by growth in the global population and economy. Shale demand is specifically addressed where the report states: “Globally, shale gas is expected to grow by 5.6% p.a. between 2014 and 2035, well in excess of the growth of total gas production. As a result, the share of shale gas in global gas production more than doubles from 11% in 2014 to 24% by 2035.”

WTI closed above $30/b today and looks to be rebounding nicely in response to all the talk of OPEC’s alleged willingness to now “cooperate” on cutting production as was first reported via Twitter by a WSJ reporter last week. Closer to home more news circulates of producers consolidating their interests elsewhere in the U.S. to focus on production in West Texas. This movement is backed up by the U.S. Energy Information Administration which anticipates crude production in the Permian Basin to climb by 5,000 barrels per day in February to 2.04 million bpd, up from 2.035 million bpd in January – in spite of a significant drop in rig count.

The EIA also predicts that the average WTI price in May of this year will be up to $36/b based on NYMEX contract values for delivery at that time indicating that the market estimates WTI to range between $21/b to $58/b at a confidence interval of 95%.

Before the Dawn

These predictions and more paint a positive impression for the Permian Basin in both the short and long term. While active rig and CAPEX numbers may be dramatically lower in response to recent soft oil pricing, the prospects for West Texas are still attractive to many investors. Rystad recently reported that the Permian Midland and Permian Delaware may attract $14 billion in investment over the next 10 months. “Production of oil from shale and tight formations from North America will transform the global energy landscape in many ways.” They go on to predict the United States will achieve self-sufficiency in liquids by 2019.

Sales Past and Future

Like Diamondback and Pioneer, Energen Corp. announced mid-February that they are launching a public offering of 12,000,000 shares of common stock. Their goal is grossing $275 million from the sale to fund drilling and developmental activities as well as other general corporate purposes. KeyBanc’s Deckelbaum has indicated that he suspects other producers of the region to follow suit including Callon Petroleum Co., Cimarex Energy Co., Laredo Petroleum Inc., Parsley Energy Inc. and RSP Permian Inc.

However, it should be noted that RSP Permian made a similar offering in October of 7,600,000 shares, Cimarex likewise offered 6 million shares in May of 2015 while Laredo Petroleum made a couple of offerings – one of common stock and another of senior notes – in the first quarter before that. Bryan Sheffield, Chairman and CEO of Parsley put it this way, “Nimble organizations have a significant advantage in volatile environment.”

Whether you call it ‘nimble’ or ‘creative’, equity sales sounds a lot like an effective solution these producers have found to see them through a challenging time.

Permian Basin Scores with Lifting of Crude Oil Export Ban

SEOadmin

New Mexico Oil and Gas Investing

Oil and Gas Current Events

Permian Basin Oil News

Texas Oil and Gas Investing

Crude Oil Export Ban

Energy Information Administration (EIA)

Oil Market

OPEC

Permian Basin

The doors to the global oil market were opened wide to America’s ...

The doors to the global oil market were opened wide to America’s oil producers after they had been closed tight(-ish) for 40 years after the successful passage of a $1.1 trillion omnibus government budget package last month. One of the major benefactors of ending the crude oil export ban looks to be the Permian Basin.

Background:

The “crude oil export ban” has been in place since the U.S. fell victim to price manipulation and an outright oil embargo at the hands of increasingly unfriendly Middle East suppliers. The impact of OPEC’s game was seen in America in the form of devastating reductions in supply and resultant rationing measures. In response, President Jimmy Carter signed into law the Energy Policy and Conservation Act of 1975 which, among other measures, prohibited the export of domestically produced crude. The Washington Post referred to it last year it as “a desperate ploy in the 1970s to control commodities markets amid spikes in oil prices induced by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.” Their editorial board also went on to say “Keeping it in place now is an economically incoherent policy, particularly when removing it would encourage an industry that is transforming the fortunes of large swaths of the nation. Congress should lift the ban entirely.”

Today:

And that is exactly what happened on December 18, 2015 when President Obama approved the bill as a result of a series of fortunate circumstances. First is the game-changing explosion in production in recent years due to the widespread application of industry innovation. Exploitation of resource deposits in previously unprofitable shale formations has lifted the United States above Russia into the top spot in oil and gas production. Second is political concessions made by Congressional leaders on both sides of the aisle. Newly elected Majority Leader, Paul Ryan, led the Republicans in making several concessions to see the ban lifted including allowing Democrats to include a five-year extension on tax credits for wind and solar energy producers. The Democrats thereby avoided a stalemate and a shutting down of D.C. And Republicans are able to give domestic energy producers a much-deserved boost to their bottom line as the stable of potential buyers is expanded considerably.

Tomorrow:

Why does the Permian Basin stand to be the big winner in this changing scene?

The Permian Basin is the overwhelming leader in production of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil. WTI, the highest grade crude, was once the benchmark for oil pricing internationally and looks likely to challenge Brent (North Sea) crude for that position of preference. When it comes to producing “sweet Texas crude,” the Permian Basin has two huge advantages–strong existing production and massive running room for growth:

The Energy Information Administration (EIA) recently reported that the Permian Basin’s December 2015 crude production equaled approximately two million barrels of oil per day, a 0.7% gain over November 2015. A year-to-year comparison shows a 12% rise in production from December 2014.

The Permian Basin is projected to remain a production powerhouse well into the future. Now, due to widespread innovation, industry experts estimate that the Permian Basin contains recoverable oil and natural gas resources exceeding that which has been produced over the last 90 years.

With these factors in play, the Permian Basin is poised take advantage of this new reality–especially when supply eventually tightens up and prices begin to rebound. With the lifting of the crude oil export ban, producers throughout the basin now enjoy the freedom to move their barrels to refineries across Europe or Asia, serving new markets while receiving world pricing.

New Year’s Day Office Hours

Khara Erickson

Uncategorized

In celebration of the New Year, our office will be closed Friday, ...

In celebration of the New Year, our office will be closed Friday, January 1st.
