And after it was sold<MG4097>, was it not <a href="#fn">[d]</a>under<MG1722> your control<MG1849>? Why<MG5101> is it that you have <a href="#fn">[e]</a>conceived<MG5087> this<MG3778> deed<MG4229> in your heart<MG2588>? You have not lied<MG5574> to men<MG444>, but to God<MG2316>.” <a href="/acts/5-5.htm">5</a>And as he heard<MG191> these<MG3778> words<MG3056>, Ananias<MG367> collapsed<MG4098> and <a href="#fn">[f]</a>died<MG1634>; and great<MG3173> fear<MG5401> came<MG1096> over<MG1909> all<MG3956> who heard<MG191> about it. <a href="/acts/5-6.htm">6</a>The young<MG3501b> men<MG3501b> got<MG450> up<MG450> and covered<MG4958> him up<MG4958>, and after carrying<MG1627> him out<MG1627>, they buried<MG2290> him. <a href="/acts/5-7.htm">7</a>Now<MG1161> an interval<MG1292> of about<MG5613> three<MG5140> hours<MG5610> elapsed<MG1096>, and his wife<MG1135> came<MG1525> in<MG1525>, not knowing<MG3609a> what had happened<MG1096>. <a href="/acts/5-8.htm">8</a>And Peter<MG4074> responded<MG611> to her, “Tell<MG3004> me whether<MG1487> you sold<MG591> the land<MG5564> for <a href="#fn">[g]</a>this<MG5118> price<MG5118>?” And she said<MG3004>, “Yes<MG3483a>, for <a href="#fn">[h]</a>that<MG5118> price<MG5118>.” <a href="/acts/5-9.htm">9</a>Then<MG1161> Peter<MG4074> said to her, “Why<MG5101> is it that you have agreed<MG4856> together<MG4856> to put<MG3985> the Spirit<MG4151> of the Lord<MG2962> to<MG3985> the<MG3985> test<MG3985>? Behold<MG2400>, the feet<MG4228> of those<MG3588> who have buried<MG2290> your husband<MG435> are at the door<MG2374>, and they will carry<MG1627> you out<MG1627> as well.” <a href="/acts/5-10.htm">10</a>And immediately<MG3916> she collapsed<MG4098> at his feet<MG4228> and <a href="#fn">[i]</a>died<MG1634>; and the young<MG3495> men<MG3495> came<MG1525> in<MG1525> and found<MG2147> her dead<MG3498>, and they carried<MG1627> her out<MG1627> and buried<MG2290> her beside<MG4314> her husband<MG435>. <a href="/acts/5-11.htm">11</a>And great<MG3173> fear<MG5401> came<MG1096> over<MG1909> the whole<MG3650> church<MG1577>, and over<MG1909> all<MG3956> who heard<MG191> about these<MG3778> things<MG3778>. <a href="/acts/5-12.htm">12</a><a href="#fn">[j]</a>At the hands<MG5495> of the apostles<MG652> many<MG4183> <a href="#fn">[k]</a>signs<MG4592> and wonders<MG5059> were taking<MG1096> place<MG1096> among<MG1722> the people<MG2992>; and they were all<MG3956> <a href="#fn">[l]</a>together<MG3661> in Solomon’s<MG4672> <a href="#fn">[m]</a>portico<MG4745>. <a href="/acts/5-13.htm">13</a>But none<MG3762> of the rest<MG3062> dared<MG5111> to associate<MG2853> with them; however<MG235>, the people<MG2992> held<MG3170> them in<MG3170> high<MG3170> esteem<MG3170>. <a href="/acts/5-14.htm">14</a>And increasingly<MG3123> believers<MG4100> in the Lord<MG2962>, large<MG4128> numbers<MG4128> of men<MG435> and women<MG1135>, were being added<MG4369> to their number, <a href="/acts/5-15.htm">15</a>to<MG5620> such<MG5620> an<MG5620> extent<MG5620> that<MG5620> they even<MG2532> carried<MG1627> the sick<MG772> out<MG1627> into the streets<MG4116> and laid<MG5087> them on cots<MG2825a> and pallets<MG2895>, so<MG2443> that<MG2443> when Peter<MG4074> came<MG2064> by at<MG2579> least<MG2579> his shadow<MG4639> might fall<MG1982> on any<MG5100> of them. <a href="/acts/5-16.htm">16</a>The <a href="#fn">[n]</a>people<MG4128> from the cities<MG4172> in the vicinity<MG4038> of Jerusalem<MG2419> were coming<MG4905> together<MG4905> as<MG2532> well<MG2532>, bringing<MG5342> people who were sick<MG772> <a href="#fn">[o]</a>or<MG2532> tormented<MG3791> with unclean<MG169> spirits<MG4151>, and they were all<MG537a> being healed<MG2323>. Imprisonment and Release<a href="/acts/5-17.htm">17</a>But the high<MG749> priest<MG749> stood<MG450> up<MG450>, along<MG2532> with all<MG3956> his associates<MG4862> (that is the sect<MG139> of the Sadducees<MG4523>), and they were filled<MG4092a> with jealousy<MG2205b>. <a href="/acts/5-18.htm">18</a>They laid<MG1911> hands<MG5495> on the apostles<MG652> and put<MG5087> them in a public<MG1219> prison<MG5084>. <a href="/acts/5-19.htm">19</a>But during<MG1223> the night<MG3571> an angel<MG32a> of the Lord<MG2962> opened<MG455> the gates<MG2374> of the prison<MG5438>, and leading<MG1806> them out<MG1806>, he said<MG3004>, <a href="/acts/5-20.htm">20</a>“Go<MG4198>, stand<MG2476> and <a href="#fn">[p]</a>speak<MG2980> to the people<MG2992> in the temple<MG2413> area <a href="#fn">[q]</a>the whole<MG3956> message<MG4487> of this<MG3778> Life<MG2222>.” <a href="/acts/5-21.htm">21</a>Upon hearing<MG191> this, they entered<MG1525> into the temple<MG2413> area about<MG5259> daybreak<MG3722> and began to teach<MG1321>. Now<MG1161> when the high<MG749> priest<MG749> and his associates<MG4862> came<MG1525>, they called<MG4779> the <a href="#fn">[r]</a>Council<MG4892> together<MG4779>, that is, all<MG3956> the Senate<MG1087> of the sons<MG5207> of Israel<MG2474>, and sent<MG649> orders to the prison<MG1201> for them to be brought<MG71>. <a href="/acts/5-22.htm">22</a>But the officers<MG5257> who came<MG3854> did not find<MG2147> them in the prison<MG5438>; and they returned<MG390> and reported<MG518>, <a href="/acts/5-23.htm">23</a>saying<MG3004>, “We found<MG2147> the prison<MG1201> locked<MG2808> quite<MG3956> securely<MG803> and the guards<MG5441> standing<MG2476> at the doors<MG2374>; but when we opened<MG455> them, we found<MG2147> no<MG3762> one<MG3762> inside<MG2080>.” <a href="/acts/5-24.htm">24</a>Now<MG1161> when<MG5613> the captain<MG4755> of the temple<MG2413> guard and the chief<MG749> priests<MG749> heard<MG191> these<MG3778> words<MG3056>, they were greatly<MG1280> perplexed<MG1280> about<MG4012> them as to what<MG5101> <a href="#fn">[s]</a>would come<MG1096> of this<MG3778>. <a href="/acts/5-25.htm">25</a>But someone<MG5100> came<MG3854> and reported<MG518> to them, “The men<MG435> whom<MG3739> you put<MG5087> in prison<MG5438> are standing<MG2476> in the temple<MG2413> area and teaching<MG1321> the people<MG2992>!” <a href="/acts/5-26.htm">26</a>Then<MG5119> the captain<MG4755> went<MG565> along<MG565> with the officers<MG5257> and proceeded to bring<MG71> them back without<MG3756, 3326> violence<MG970> (for they were<MG5399> afraid<MG5399> of the people<MG2992>, that they might be stoned<MG3034>). <a href="/acts/5-27.htm">27</a>When they had brought<MG71> them, they had them stand<MG2476> <a href="#fn">[t]</a>before<MG1722> the Council<MG4892>. The high<MG749> priest<MG749> interrogated<MG1905> them, <a href="/acts/5-28.htm">28</a>saying<MG3004>, “We gave<MG3853> you strict<MG3852> orders<MG3852> not to continue teaching<MG1321> in this<MG3778> name<MG3686>, and <a href="#fn">[u]</a>yet<MG2400>, you have filled<MG4137> Jerusalem<MG2419> with your teaching<MG1322> and intend<MG1014> to bring<MG1863> this<MG3778> Man’s<MG444> blood<MG129> upon us.” <a href="/acts/5-29.htm">29</a>But Peter<MG4074> and the apostles<MG652> answered<MG611>, “We must<MG1163> obey<MG3980> God<MG2316> rather<MG3123> than<MG2228> men<MG444>. <a href="/acts/5-30.htm">30</a>The God<MG2316> of our fathers<MG3962> raised<MG1453> up<MG1453> Jesus<MG2424>, whom<MG3739> you put<MG1315a> to<MG1315a> death<MG1315a> by hanging<MG2910> Him on <a href="#fn">[v]</a>a cross<MG3586>. <a href="/acts/5-31.htm">31</a>He is the one whom God<MG2316> exalted<MG5312> <a href="#fn">[w]</a>to His right<MG1188> hand<MG1188> as a <a href="#fn">[x]</a>Prince<MG747> and a Savior<MG4990>, to grant<MG1325> repentance<MG3341> to Israel<MG2474>, and forgiveness<MG859> of sins<MG266>. <a href="/acts/5-32.htm">32</a>And we are witnesses<MG3144> <a href="#fn">[y]</a>of these<MG3778> things<MG4487>; and so is the Holy<MG40> Spirit<MG4151>, whom<MG3739> God<MG2316> has given<MG1325> to those<MG3588> who obey<MG3980> Him.” Gamaliel’s Counsel<a href="/acts/5-33.htm">33</a>But when they heard<MG191> this, they became<MG1282> infuriated<MG1282> and nearly decided<MG1011> to execute<MG337> them. <a href="/acts/5-34.htm">34</a>But a Pharisee<MG5330> named<MG3686> Gamaliel<MG1059>, a teacher<MG3547> of<MG3547> the<MG3547> Law<MG3547>, respected<MG5093> by all<MG3956> the people<MG2992>, stood<MG450> up<MG450> in the Council<MG4892> and gave<MG2753> orders<MG2753> to put<MG4160> the men<MG444> outside<MG1854> for a short<MG1024> time<MG1024>. <a href="/acts/5-35.htm">35</a>And he said<MG3004> to them, “Men<MG435> of Israel<MG2475a>, be<MG4337> careful<MG4337, 1438> as to what<MG5101> you are<MG3195> about<MG3195> to<MG3195> do<MG4238> with these<MG3778> men<MG444>. <a href="/acts/5-36.htm">36</a>For, some<MG3778> time<MG2250> ago<MG4253> Theudas<MG2333> appeared<MG450>, claiming<MG3004> to be somebody<MG5100>, and a group<MG706> of about<MG5613> four<MG5071> hundred<MG5071> men<MG435> joined<MG4346a> him. <a href="#fn">[z]</a>But he was killed<MG337>, and all<MG3956> who<MG3745> followed<MG3982> him were dispersed<MG1262> and came<MG1096> to nothing<MG3762>. <a href="/acts/5-37.htm">37</a>After<MG3326> this<MG3778> man<MG3778>, Judas<MG2455> of Galilee<MG1057> appeared<MG450> in the days<MG2250> of the census<MG582> and drew<MG868> away<MG868> some people<MG2992> after<MG3694> him; he also<MG2548> perished<MG622>, and all<MG3956> those who<MG3745> followed<MG3982> him were scattered<MG1287>. <a href="/acts/5-38.htm">38</a>And so in the present<MG3568> case<MG3568>, I say<MG3004> to you, stay<MG868> away<MG868> from these<MG3778> men<MG444> and leave<MG863> them alone<MG863>, for if<MG1437> the source<MG1537> of this<MG3778> plan<MG1012> or<MG2228> <a href="#fn">[aa]</a>movement<MG2041> is men<MG444>, it will be overthrown<MG2647>; <a href="/acts/5-39.htm">39</a>but if<MG1487> the source<MG1537> is God<MG2316>, you will not be able<MG1410> to overthrow<MG2647> them; or<MG3379> else<MG3379> you may even<MG2532> be found<MG2147> fighting<MG2314> against<MG2314> God<MG2314>.” <a href="/acts/5-40.htm">40</a>They followed<MG3982> his advice<MG3982>;
