closely with state and local governments and many HHS-funded services are provided at the local level by state or county agencies, or through private sector grantees. The Department's programs are administered by divisions, including the U.S. Public Health Service and human services agencies. In addition to the services they deliver, the HHS programs provide for equitable treatment of beneficiaries nationwide.</p><p>The <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20140703221749/http://www.usphs.gov/">U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps</a> is a uniformed service of more than 6,000 health professionals who serve in many HHS and other federal agencies. The Surgeon General is head of the Commissioned Corps.</p><h2><a href="/web/20140703221749/http://www.hhs.gov/about/foa/osleadership/index.html">Office of the Secretary Staff Divisions (StaffDivs)</a></h2><p><a href="/web/20140703221749/http://www.hhs.gov/about/foa/osleadership/index.html">The Office of the Secretary</a> provides leadership through several offices that oversee operations, provides guidance, and ensures that funds are spent wisely and laws are followed fairly.聽</p><h2><a href="/web/20140703221749/http://www.hhs.gov/about/foa/opdivs/index.html">Operating Divisions (Opdivs)</a></h2><p>HHS has <a href="/web/20140703221749/http://www.hhs.gov/about/foa/opdivs/index.html">11 operating divisions</a>, including eight agencies in the U.S. Public Health Service and three human services agencies, which administer a wide variety of health and human services and conduct life-saving research for the nation.
