and you will see<MH7200> the king<MH4428> of Babylon<MH894> eye<MH5869> to eye<MH5869>, and he will speak<MH1696> with you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>face<MH6310> to face<MH6310>, and you will go<MH935> to Babylon<MH894>.’”’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/34-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Yet<MH389> hear<MH8085> the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068>, Zedekiah<MH6667> king<MH4428> of Judah<MH3063>! This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559> concerning<MH5921> you: ‘You will not die<MH4191> by the sword<MH2719>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/34-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>You will die<MH4191> in peace<MH7965>; and as <i>spices</i> were burned<MH4955> for your fathers<MH1>, the former<MH7223> kings<MH4428> who<MH834> were before<MH6440> you, so<MH3651> they will burn<MH8313> <i>spices</i> for you; and they will mourn<MH5594> for you, <i>crying,</i> “Oh<MH1945>, <i>my</i> lord<MH113>!”’ For I have spoken<MH1696> the word<MH1697>,” declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/34-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Then Jeremiah<MH3414> the prophet<MH5030> spoke<MH1696> all<MH3605> these<MH428> words<MH1697> to Zedekiah<MH6667> king<MH4428> of Judah<MH3063> in Jerusalem<MH3389> <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/34-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>when the army<MH2428> of the king<MH4428> of Babylon<MH894> was fighting<MH3898a> against<MH5921> Jerusalem<MH3389> and all<MH3605> the remaining<MH3498> cities<MH5892b> of Judah<MH3063>, <i>that is,</i> Lachish<MH3923> and Azekah<MH5825>, for they <i>alone</i> remained<MH7604> as fortified<MH4013> cities<MH5892b> among the cities<MH5892b> of Judah<MH3063>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/34-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>The word<MH1697> that came<MH1961> to Jeremiah<MH3414> from the LORD<MH3068> after<MH310> King<MH4428> Zedekiah<MH6667> had made<MH3772> a covenant<MH1285> with all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> who<MH834> were in Jerusalem<MH3389>, to proclaim<MH7121> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>release<MH1865> to them: <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/34-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>that each<MH376> person<MH376> was to set<MH7971> his male<MH5650> servant<MH5650> free<MH2670> and each<MH376> his female<MH8198> servant<MH8198>, a Hebrew<MH5680> man<MH5680> or a Hebrew<MH5680> woman<MH5680>, so that no<MH1115> one<MH376> would keep<MH5647> them, his Jewish<MH3064> brother<MH251> <i>or sister,</i> in<MH5647> bondage<MH5647>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/34-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And all<MH3605> the officials<MH8269> and all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> obeyed<MH8085> who<MH834> had entered<MH935> into the covenant<MH1285> that each<MH376> person<MH376> was to set<MH7971> his male<MH5650> servant<MH5650> free<MH2670> and each<MH376> his female<MH8198> servant<MH8198>, so that no<MH1115> one<MH1115> would keep<MH5647> them in<MH5647> bondage<MH5647> any<MH5750> longer<MH5750>; they obeyed<MH8085>, and set<MH7971> <i>them free.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/34-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>But afterward<MH310, 3651> they turned<MH7725> around<MH7725> and took<MH7725> back<MH7725> the male<MH5650> servants<MH5650> and the female<MH8198> servants<MH8198> whom<MH834> they had set<MH7971> free<MH2670>, and brought<MH3533> them into<MH3533> subjection<MH3533> as male<MH5650> servants<MH5650> and as female<MH8198> servants<MH8198>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/34-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068> came<MH1961> to Jeremiah<MH3414> from the LORD<MH3068>, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/34-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>“This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478> says<MH559>: ‘I made<MH3772> a covenant<MH1285> with your forefathers<MH1> on the day<MH3117> that I brought<MH3318> them out<MH3318> of the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>, from the house<MH1004> of bondage<MH5650>, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/34-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>“At the end<MH7093> of seven<MH7651> years<MH8141> each<MH376> of you shall set<MH7971> free<MH7971> his Hebrew<MH5680> brother<MH251> who<MH834> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>has been sold<MH4376> to you and has served<MH5647> you for six<MH8337a> years<MH8141>, and you shall send<MH7971> him out<MH7971> free<MH2670> from you.” But your forefathers<MH1> did not obey<MH8085> Me nor incline<MH5186> their ear<MH241> to Me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/34-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Although recently<MH3117> you <i>had</i> turned<MH7725> and done<MH6213a> what<MH3477> is<MH3477> right<MH3477> in My sight<MH5869>, each<MH376> one<MH376> proclaiming<MH7121> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>release<MH1865> to his neighbor<MH7453>, and you had made<MH3772> a covenant<MH1285> before<MH6440> Me in the house<MH1004> which<MH834> is called<MH7121> by My name<MH8034>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/34-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Yet you turned<MH7725> and profaned<MH2490c> My name<MH8034>, and each<MH376> person<MH376> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>took<MH7725> back<MH7725> his male<MH5650> servant<MH5650> and each<MH376> his female<MH8198> servant<MH8198> whom<MH834> you had set<MH7971> free<MH2670> according to their desire<MH5315>, and you brought<MH3533> them into<MH3533> subjection<MH3533> to be your male<MH5650> and female<MH8198> servants<MH5650, 8198>.’ <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/34-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>“Therefore<MH3651> this<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559>: ‘You have not obeyed<MH8085> Me in proclaiming<MH7121> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>release<MH1865>, each<MH376> one<MH376> to his brother<MH251> and each<MH376> to his neighbor<MH7453>. Behold<MH2009>, I am proclaiming<MH7121> a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>release<MH1865> to you,’ declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>, ‘to the sword<MH2719>, to the plague<MH1698>, and to the famine<MH7458>; and I will make<MH5414> you a terror<MH2113> to all<MH3605> the kingdoms<MH4467> of the earth<MH776>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/34-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>I will give<MH5414> the people<MH376> who have violated<MH5674a> My covenant<MH1285>, who<MH834> have not fulfilled<MH6965> the words<MH1697> of the covenant<MH1285> which<MH834> they made<MH3772> before<MH6440> Me, <i>when</i> they cut<MH3772> the calf<MH5695> in two<MH8147> and passed<MH5674a> between<MH996> its parts<MH1335>— <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/34-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>the officials<MH8269> of Judah<MH3063> and the officials<MH8269> of Jerusalem<MH3389>, the high<MH5631> officials<MH5631> and the priests<MH3548>, and all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> of the land<MH776> who passed<MH5674a> between<MH996> the parts<MH1335> of the calf<MH5695>— <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/34-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>I will hand<MH5414, 3207> them over<MH5414> to their enemies<MH340> and to those who seek<MH1245> their lives<MH5315>.
