<A name="6"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/2-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>upon which his mother bid the servants do whatever he should order. <A name="7"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/2-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>now there were six cisterns of stone plac'd there for the use of the Jews in their purifications, containing two or three firkins a-piece. <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/2-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>these Jesus order'd the waiters to fill with water, so they filled them up to the brim. <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/2-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>now fill out, said he, and carry it to the steward of the feast, which accordingly they did. <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/2-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>as soon as the steward had tasted the water that was made wine, (for he did not know whence it came, but the servants who drew the water knew it,) he called the bridegroom, <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/2-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>and said to him, 'tis usual to present the best wine first, and afterwards the worse, when the guests have drank pretty freely: but you have reserved the best wine to the last. <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/2-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>thus was the first miracle of Jesus wrought at Cana in Galilee, by which he displayed his power; and his disciples believed on him.<p> <A name="13"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Cleanses the Temple<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/21.htm#12">Matthew 21:12&#8211;17</a>; <a href ="../mark/11.htm#15">Mark 11:15&#8211;19</a>; <a href ="../luke/19.htm#45">Luke 19:45&#8211;48</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/2-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>After this he went down to Capernaum, in company with his mother, his brethren, and his disciples: but they stay'd there only a few days.<p> <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/2-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>for the Jews passover being nigh, Jesus went up to Jerusalem, <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/2-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>where he found in the temple those that sold oxen, sheep, and doves, besides the changers of money, who were sitting there. <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/2-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>upon which he made a whip of small cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with their sheep, and oxen; and threw about the changers money, and over-set the tables; and said to the dove-sellers, <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/2-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>away with these things; make not my father's house a market-house. <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/2-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>which put his disciples in mind of that passage, "my zeal for thine house does prey upon me." <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/2-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>whereupon the Jews said, what miracle can you show to justify your behaviour? <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/2-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Jesus answered them, saying, destroy this temple, and within three days I will raise it up. <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/2-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>to this said the Jews, forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?
