He started as a full-back but appears wasted in defence.</P><P>The dreadlocked winger earned a standing ovation when he was substituted 12 minutes from full-time in a one-sided final before joining in the celebrations when the 4-1 win was completed.</P><P>Ryan Babel - a reported target for Arsenal - scored one goal, missed a penalty and picked up the man-of-the-match award, while Maceo Rigters sealed the golden boot with his strike.</P><P>Otman Bakkal and Luigi Bruins scored the others, while Dragan Mrdja grabbed a consolation, with Jong Oranje cruising to consecutive titles after losing an entire team a year ago.</P><P>"Our achievement is bigger than last year because I think we had more quality then," said coach Foppe De Haan.</P><P>The competition was played in consecutive years to move the tournament to "odd" years, raising its profile and coverage in the absence of a major championship for the seniors.</P><P>While England only had two full internationals, semi-finalists Belgium had a team packed with seniors experience to signal their intent.</P><P>"Well, if I directly look and say Belgium have got nine full internationals in their squad and we had two - Kieran Richardson and David Nugent - you draw from that whatever you draw from that," said Stuart Pearce, who is expected to discuss this week if he will carry on as England Under-21 coach on a full-time basis.</P><P>Several of Pearce's youngsters joined the likes of Drenthe, Babel and Rigters in showing their promise.</P><P>Scott Carson played an instrumental role in keeping England unbeaten since 2005, not counting the crazy shoot-out defeat against the hosts.</P><P>He also admitted he needs regular football next season if he wants to keep his place in the senior squad.</P> <div id="article_footer"> <div class="separator1"></div> <div id=copy_publisher>COPYRIGHT 2007 MGN Ltd.<br> No portion of this article can be reproduced without the express written permission from the copyright holder. </div> <div id=copy_gale>Copyright 2023 Gale, Cengage Learning.
