[<a href="https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/accent">source</a> – <em>other meanings are available</em>]</li> </ul> <p>It comes from Middle English <em>accent</em> (accent, modulation), from Latin <em>accentus</em> (a blast, signal, accent, tone), from <em>accinō / accanō</em> (to sing to), from <em>ad</em> (to[wards]), and <em>canō</em> (to sing, recite, sound), a calque of Ancient Greek <em>προσῳδία</em> (prosōidía – song sung to music; pronunciation of syllable), from <em>πρός</em> (prós – to) and <em>ᾠδή</em> (ōidḗ – song) [<a href="https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/accent#English">source</a>].</p> <p>Words for <strong>accent</strong> in many other languages come from the same roots, as do the words <strong>chant</strong>, <strong>descant</strong>, <strong>enchant</strong>, <strong>incant</strong> and <strong>hen</strong> in English, <strong>canu</strong> (to sing, intone, chant) in Welsh, <strong>can</strong> (to say) in Scottish Gaelic, <strong>cicogna</strong> (stork) in Spanish, <strong>káně </strong> (buzzard) in Czech, and <strong>خوانْدَن</strong> (xândan – to read, recite, sing, study) in Persian [<a href="https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/cano#Latin">source</a>].</p> <p>Incidentally, the Ancient Greek word <strong>προσῳδία</strong> (prosōidía – song sung to music; pronunciation of syllable) is the root (via Middle French and Latin) of the English word <strong>prosody</strong>, which is study of rhythm, intonation, stress, and related attributes in speech, or the study of the patterns of sounds and rhythms in poetry [<a href="https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/prosody#English">source</a>].</p> <p>You might believe that you don’t have an accent, but you do. We all do. You might think that because you sound similar to most people around you, you don’t have an accent, while people from elsewhere do. From their perspective, it’s you that has an accent. I have a bit of a wandering accent that changes depending on who I’ve been listening and/or talking to.</p> <p>You can also listen to this podcast on: <a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/radio-omniglot/id1432641094">Apple Podcasts</a>, <a href="https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8b1b1d1b-b39e-4277-b28d-479a3b5043b3/radio-omniglot">Amazon Music</a>, <a href="https://tunein.com/podcasts/Education-Podcasts/Radio-Omniglot-p1154145/">TuneIn</a>, <a href="https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/radio-omniglot-716327">Podchaser</a>, <a href="<a href="https://podbay.fm/p/radio-omniglot">Podbay</a> or <a href="https://podtail.com/da/podcast/radio-omniglot/">Podtail</a> and other pod places.</p> <p>If you would like to support this podcast, you can make a donation via <a href="https://www.paypal.com/uk/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_flow&SESSION=aLjPfXL-vP_1gQ_U23Iz8_hSWLlhzLHPMFZrt32dIEfG8htoNFLYaPoWkv8&dispatch=5885d80a13c0db1f8e263663d3faee8def8934b92a630e40b7fef61ab7e9fe63">PayPal</a> or <a href="https://www.patreon.com/omniglot">Patreon</a>, or <a href="http://www.omniglot.com/donations.htm">contribute to Omniglot in other ways</a>.</p> <p>Radio Omniglot podcasts are brought to you in association with <a href="https://blubrry.com/services/podcast-hosting/?code=omniglot">Blubrry Podcast Hosting</a>, a great place to host your podcasts. The most common type of larch tree in Europe is the <strong>European larch</strong> (<em>Larix decidua</em>), which is native to northern Italy. Other types of larch are availble.</p> <p>The English word <strong>larch</strong> comes from early modern German <em>Larche/Lärche</em>, from Middle High German <em>larche</em>, from Old High German <em>larihha</em>, from Latin <em>larix</em> (larch), from Ancient Greek <em>λάριξ</em> (lárix – larch, Venice turpentine*), possibly from Gaulish <em>*devro</em> (oak?) from Proto-Celtic <em>*daru</em> (oak), from PIE <em>*dóru</em> (tree) [<a href="https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/larch#English">source</a>].</p> <p><em><strong>*Venice turpentine</strong> = A thick substance made from the tree resin of the European larch (<em>Larix decidua</em>), formerly used as a component in the oil paintings to create glossy, translucent glazes [<a href="https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Venice_turpentine#English">source</a>].</em></p> <p>Words in the modern Celtic languages from the same Proto-Celtic root include: <strong>dair</strong> [d̪ˠaɾʲ] (oak) in Irish, <strong>dair</strong> [darʲ] (oak) in Scottish Gaelic, <strong>darragh</strong> (oak) in Manx, <strong>dâr</strong> [ˈdaːr] (oak tree, leader, mighty lord) in Welsh, <strong>dar</strong> [daːr / dæːr] (oak) in Cornish, and <strong>dar</strong> [dɑːr] (oak) in Breton [<a href="https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Reconstruction:Proto-Celtic/daru">source</a>].</p> <p>Words from the same Proto-Celtic root in other languages include: <strong>làrix</strong> in Catalan, <strong>lariks</strong> in Dutch <strong>learag</strong> in Scottish Gaelic, <strong>larch</strong> in English, <strong>Lärche</strong> in German, and <strong>lærk</strong> in Danish, all of which mean <strong>larch</strong> (tree) [<a href="https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/larix#Latin">source</a>].</p> <p>Incidentally, the French word <strong>mélèze</strong> (larch) has doubly Celtic roots: it comes from Franco-Provençal (Dauphinois) <em>melèzo</em> (larch tree), from Vulgar Latin <em>*melice</em> (larch), from Gaulish <em>*mel-</em> (larch) and Latin <em>larix</em> (larch). The Gaulish word <em>*mel-</em> comes from Proto-Celtic <em>*meli</em> (honey) [<a href="https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/m%C3%A9l%C3%A8ze">source</a>]. </p> <p>Words from the same PIE root include <strong>δόρυ</strong> (dóry – spear) in Greek, <strong>terva</strong> (tar) in Finnish, <strong>dearbh</strong> (sure, certain) in Irish, <strong>tree</strong>, <strong>trim</strong>, and <strong>trough</strong> and <strong>true</strong> in English, and <strong>trä</strong> (wood) in Swedish [<a href="https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Reconstruction:Proto-Indo-European/d%C3%B3ru">source</a>]. </p> <p>See the Celtiadur post <a href="https://www.omniglot.com/celtiadur/2019/08/21/oaks/">Oak (trees)</a> for more details of words for <strong>oak</strong> and related things in Celtic languages. It’s also the name of a type of wine from the Hochheim region of Germany [<a href="https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/hock#English">source</a>].</p> <p>See the Celtiadur post <a href="https://www.omniglot.com/celtiadur/2018/11/17/legs-feet/">Legs & Feet</a> for more details of words for <strong>shank</strong>, <strong>calf</strong>, <strong>leg</strong>, <strong>foot</strong> and related things in Celtic languages. The Navy Bureau of Ships asked him to come up with a more interesting name to make the job of an acoustic ranging technician sound more glamorous. He suggested <strong>SONAR</strong>, and said that it stood for <strong>So</strong>und <strong>N</strong>avigation and <strong>R</strong>anging – so it is in fact a backronym (an acronym based on an existing word) [<a href="https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/sonar#English">source</a>].</p> <p>By the way, an adult male swan is a <strong>cob</strong>, which comes from Middle English <em>cobbe</em> (male swan, gang leader, bully) [<a href="https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/cob#English">source</a>]. An adult female swan is a <strong>pen</strong>, the origins of which are uncertain [<a href="https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/pen#English">source</a>], and a baby swan is a <strong>cygnet</strong>, which comes from Middle English <em>signet</em> (a young swan), from Anglo-Norman <em>cignet</em>, a diminutive of Old French <em>cigne</em> (swan), from Latin <em>cycnus</em> [ky.knus] (swan, [singing] poet), from Ancient Greek <em>κύκνος</em> (kúknos – swan, a type of ship) [<a href="https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/cygnet#English">source</a>]. Baby swans are also known as <strong>swanlings</strong> [<a href="https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/swanling#English">source</a>].</p> <p>You can also listen to this podcast on: <a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/radio-omniglot/id1432641094">Apple Podcasts</a>, <a href="https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8b1b1d1b-b39e-4277-b28d-479a3b5043b3/radio-omniglot">Amazon Music</a>, <a href="https://tunein.com/podcasts/Education-Podcasts/Radio-Omniglot-p1154145/">TuneIn</a>, <a href="https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/radio-omniglot-716327">Podchaser</a>, <a href="<a href="https://podbay.fm/p/radio-omniglot">Podbay</a> or <a href="https://podtail.com/da/podcast/radio-omniglot/">Podtail</a> and other pod places.</p> <p>If you would like to support this podcast, you can make a donation via <a href="https://www.paypal.com/uk/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_flow&SESSION=aLjPfXL-vP_1gQ_U23Iz8_hSWLlhzLHPMFZrt32dIEfG8htoNFLYaPoWkv8&dispatch=5885d80a13c0db1f8e263663d3faee8def8934b92a630e40b7fef61ab7e9fe63">PayPal</a> or <a href="https://www.patreon.com/omniglot">Patreon</a>, or <a href="http://www.omniglot.com/donations.htm">contribute to Omniglot in other ways</a>.</p> <p>Radio Omniglot podcasts are brought to you in association with <a href="https://blubrry.com/services/podcast-hosting/?code=omniglot">Blubrry Podcast Hosting</a>, a great place to host your podcasts. Well, back in the 14th century the French word <em>bureau</em> meant a carpet on which one did one’s accounts, probably made of coarse fabric. Later a table for doing accounts, then a place where you do your accounts, and by the 16th century it meant an establishment open to the public where a service of collective interest is undertaken [<a href="https://fr.wiktionary.org/wiki/bureau">source</a>].</p> <p>The word <strong>burel</strong> (a coarse woolen cloth) also exists in English and was borrowed from Old French [<a href="https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/burel#English">source</a>], and the old word <strong>borrel</strong> (a mean, ignorant or unlearned fellow) probably comes from the same roots [<a href="https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/borrel#Etymology_2">source</a>].</p> <p>The English prefix <strong>pyro-</strong> (fire, heat, fever), as in <strong>pyromancy</strong> (divination by fire), <strong>pyrometer</strong> (a thermometer designed to measure high temperatures) and <strong>pyroclast</strong> (solid matter ejected into the air by an active volcano) comes from the same PIE root [<a href="https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/pyro-#English">source</a>], as do such words as <strong>fire</strong>, <strong>pyre</strong> and <strong>purge</strong> [<a href="https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/fire#English">source</a>].</p> <p>Here’s a <a href="https://youtu.be/TcUGKO5ypvs">video</a> I made of this information:</p> <p><iframe loading="lazy" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/TcUGKO5ypvs" title="YouTube video player" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0"></iframe></p> <p>Video made with <a href="http://bit.ly/37vAg5P">Doodly</a> [afflilate link].</p> <p>I also write about words, etymology and other language-related topics on the <a href="https://www.omniglot.com/bloggle/">Omniglot Blog</a>, and I explore etymological connections between Celtic languages on the <a href="http://www.omniglot.com/celtiadur/">Celtiadur</a>.</p> <p>You can also listen to this podcast on: <a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/radio-omniglot/id1432641094">Apple Podcasts</a>, <a href="https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8b1b1d1b-b39e-4277-b28d-479a3b5043b3/radio-omniglot">Amazon Music</a>, <a href="https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/radio-omniglot">Stitcher</a>, <a href="https://tunein.com/podcasts/Education-Podcasts/Radio-Omniglot-p1154145/">TuneIn</a>, <a href="https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/radio-omniglot-716327">Podchaser</a>, <a href="https://player.fm/series/radio-omniglot">PlayerFM</a> or <a href="https://podtail.com/da/podcast/radio-omniglot/">podtail</a>.</p> <p>If you would like to support this podcast, you can make a donation via <a href="https://www.paypal.com/uk/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_flow&SESSION=aLjPfXL-vP_1gQ_U23Iz8_hSWLlhzLHPMFZrt32dIEfG8htoNFLYaPoWkv8&dispatch=5885d80a13c0db1f8e263663d3faee8def8934b92a630e40b7fef61ab7e9fe63">PayPal</a> or <a href="https://www.patreon.com/omniglot">Patreon</a>, or <a href="http://www.omniglot.com/donations.htm">contribute to Omniglot in other ways</a>.</p> <p>Radio Omniglot podcasts are brought to you in association with <a href="https://blubrry.com/services/podcast-hosting/?code=omniglot">Blubrry Podcast Hosting</a>, a great place to host your podcasts. In Classical Latin it was only used in poetry, while <em>equus</em> was the usual word for horse. In Vulgar Latin and Late Latin <em>caballus</em> was more commonly used, and mean a horse, nag, pack-horse, jade or hack.</p> <p>Words for horse in various other languages come from the same Latin root, including <strong>cavallo</strong> in Italian, <strong>caballo</strong> in Spanish, <strong>cavalo</strong> in Portuguese and <strong>cheval</strong> in French [<a href="https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/caballus#Latin">source</a>]. The English words <strong>cavalry</strong>, <strong>chivalry</strong> and <strong>cavalier</strong> also come from the same Latin roots [<a href="https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/cavalry">source</a>].</p> <p>Another Proto-Celtic word for horse was <strong>*ekʷos</strong>, which comes from the Proto-Indo-European <em>*h₁éḱwos</em> (stallion, horse) [<a href="https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Reconstruction:Proto-Celtic/kaballos">source</a>].</p> <p>Descendants in the Celtic languages include:</p> <ul> <li><strong>epos</strong> = horse in Gaulish</li> <li><strong>each</strong> [ax] = horse (<em>archaic</em>) Irish</li> <li><strong>each</strong> [ɛx] = horse in Scottish Gaulish</li> <li><strong>eagh</strong> = steed, riding horse in Manx</li> <li><strong>ebol</strong> [ˈɛbɔl / ˈeːbɔl] = colt, foal, sucker in Welsh</li> <li><strong>ebel</strong> = horse in Cornish</li> <li><strong>ebeul</strong> [ˈe.bøl] = foal in Breton</li> </ul> <p>The English words <strong>equine</strong>, <strong>equestrian</strong> come from the same PIE root, via Latin [<a href="https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/equinus#Latin">source</a>], as do words beginning with <strong>hippo-</strong>, such as <strong>hippopotamus</strong>, <strong>hippodrome</strong> and <strong>hippomancy</strong> (divination by the interpretation of the appearance and behaviour of horses) the via Ancient Greek [<a href="https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:English_words_prefixed_with_hippo-">source</a>].</p> <p>Another Proto-Celtic word for horse was <strong>*markos</strong>, which possibly comes from the Proto-Indo-European <em>*márkos</em> (horse) [<a href="https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Reconstruction:Proto-Indo-European/m%C3%A1rkos">source</a>].</p> <p>Descendants in the Celtic languages include:</p> <ul> <li><strong>marc</strong> [mˠaɾˠk] = horse (<em>literary, archaic</em>) Irish</li> <li><strong>marc</strong> [marxk] = charger, warhorse (<em>literary</em>) in Scottish Gaulish</li> <li><strong>mark</strong> = horse in Manx</li> <li><strong>march</strong> [marχ] = horse, stallion, war-horse, steed in Welsh</li> <li><strong>margh</strong> [ˈmaɾx] = horse in Cornish</li> <li><strong>marc’h</strong> [ˈmaʁχ] = horse, easel in Breton</li> </ul> <p>The English words <strong>mare</strong> and <strong>marshal</strong> possibly come from the same roots [<a href="https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Reconstruction:Proto-Germanic/marhaz">source</a>].</p> <p><a href="https://www.omniglot.com/celtiadur/2020/01/05/horses/">More details about these words on Celtiadur</a>, a blog where I explore connections between Celtic languages in more depth.
