But prosecutors say a looming divorce was the motive for Seacat to kill Vashti and then set her body on fire.</p> <p>Several co-workers testified earlier in the trial about Brett Seacat’s odd behavior the day before his wife’s death -- that he burned hard drives, discarded cell phones and asked for an overhead projector. When Seacat took the stand, he was ready with answers to explain everything.</p> <p>Seacat said he asked a co-worker for the projector to work on a fraud exercise.</p> <p>“I don’t want to say I was making a false social security card – but I was showing how a false social security card was made. Prosecutors have suggested that he borrowed the projector to forge Vashti’s suicide note.</p> <p>Seacat also said he wanted to replace the hard drives in his two old laptops before selling them. He said he melted them, instead of just throwing them away, to protect his identity. </p> <p>“That’s what you’re supposed to do with hard drives because the main source for identity theft is trash and if you leave a hard drive in a trash, most identify thieves would not have any problem at all accessing that hard drive in some form or another,” said Seacat.</p> <p><strong>Read more: <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130609151142/http://www.hlntv.com/article/2013/06/03/brett-seacat-vashti-cop-dreams-kill-wife">Testimony: Kansas cop dreamed of killing wife</a></strong></p> <p>He had a similar explanation for the two old cellphones he discarded. He said he thought about selling them but read online that you shouldn’t because of identity theft so he threw them in the trash instead.</p> <p>Seacat also explained what happened in the week before Vashti’s death. The two met up at a Target, according to Seacat, where she told him she was serving him divorce papers at their therapist’s office.   </p> <p>“She just seemed… sad, upset,” said Seacat. “She wasn’t crying or anything like that but she was having trouble talking.”</p> <p>After he received the stack of papers, the couple went to a sandwich shop to discuss them.</p> <p><strong>Read more: <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130609151142/http://hlntv.com/article/2013/06/05/brett-seacat-trial-vashti-suicide-note-expert-not-forged?hpt=hln10_2" target="_blank">Expert: Brett Seacat didn't forge suicide note</a></strong></p> <p>“I think my main line of questioning was, ‘Do you really know what you’re doing here? This is really big.’ Just along those lines because I hadn’t been served yet, I didn’t know any of the details of the divorce,” said Seacat.</p> <p>Vashti kept changing her mind about their separation, according to Seacat.</p> <p>“She did not seem to have made up her mind at all, which really seemed odd because I was being served. She would say, ‘This doesn’t mean we’re getting a divorce’ and I would try to tell her, ‘These are divorce papers, this does mean we’re getting a divorce.’ She would say, ‘We can call it off, work it out,’” Seacat testified.</p> <p>On the morning before Vashti’s death, Brett Seacat said, she gave him a big kiss. And then in the morning she gives me a kiss, which makes me think not divorce. So it just let me know we were back on the not-divorce track, or led me to believe that anyway,” said Seacat.</p> <p>In a seven-hour interview conducted with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation before the trial, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130609151142/http://articles.kwch.com/2013-05-24/vashti_39508543" target="_blank">Seacat says his wife was secretly depressed</a>.</p> <p>"The only reason why I knew 'cause I was the guy who spent the nights with her," he said.</p> <p>But friends testified that Vashti was <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130609151142/http://articles.kwch.com/2013-05-29/vashti-seacat_39609500" target="_blank">happy in the days before her death</a>. They say she was ready to move on with her life and her divorce, but was scared about how Seacat would react. He had already <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130609151142/http://articles.kwch.com/2013-05-29/vashti-seacat_39609500" target="_blank">allegedly threatened to take their boys away from her</a> if she left him.</p> <p>In that same interview with investigators, Seacat insisted he <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130609151142/http://articles.kwch.com/2013-05-28/brett-seacat_39586268" target="_blank">had nothing to do with Vashti’s death.</a></p> <p>He told them he was sleeping downstairs when he heard a loud noise. His wife allegedly called him on his cell phone and told him to get their boys. After hearing two more loud pops, Seacat says he went upstairs to find flames in the hallway. According to his story, there were also flames on the bed, where he saw Vashti’s body.</p> <p>Seacat says he picked her up and tried to drag her through the flames and found she was limp in his arms. But investigators told him his story didn’t add up.</p> <p>For one, he didn’t have any blood on him. All they found was <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130609151142/http://articles.kwch.com/2013-05-29/vashti-seacat_39609500" target="_blank">singed hair on his calves</a> and two blisters on the top of his left foot. The gun that killed Vashti was also found under her body.</p> <p>Brett Seacat and the couple's sons escaped from the blaze unharmed.</p> <p>The Seacats' home in Kingman, Kansas, sits not far from the courthouse where Brett Seacat is standing trial.</p> <p>Despite extensive fire damage, the house still stands; a brick chimney pokes out of the charred remains.</p> <p>"I'm smart enough that if I wanted to kill my wife ... I could've come up with something better than this," Seacat told investigators about the shooting and the fire.</p> <p>"This is what a crazy person does."</p> </div> </div> <div id="gigya-content"
