In Malaysia, there have been significantly less gender-related studies focused on local animation. This study was carried out to investigate the gender roles and representation of female characters in Malaysian animated works. The findings from this analysis was used as support for the production of my short animated film project entitled Beauty and the Feast, in which I explored less stereotypical portrayals of a female character. A coded content analysis was carried out on several episodes taken from two Malaysian television series (Upin \u0026amp;amp; Ipin, and BoBoiBoy), taking into account their current popularity among the target audience. The characters from these animations were investigated according to several stereotypical gender characteristics. The stories in the films tend to have a lasting impact on the minds of the audience and have influenced generations to take inspiration from the characters and stories. The stories have effected traditions, cultural values and gender norms across societies. It is in the wake of the huge impact that these films tend to exercise on the minds of the audience especially the impressionable children, thereby shaping their moral and value systems, that the films are often subjected to a lot of scrutiny in their role in the lives of the audience and their effect on their thought processes. These films, especially from the yesteryears, have been ridiculed for their glorification of male machismo and portrayal of female lead as a damsel in distress that requires saving by the hero of the film. Also the cliched depiction of beauty standards is another factor that adds to the ridicule. This study examines the popular animated films from Hollywood and studies the depiction of the female lead in the films. They become eager watchers as soon as they reach2 to 4 years of age. In light of this fact, an excessive number of youngsters are watching television excessively and the cartoons that they watch have turned out to be an addiction. Children distinguish promptly with cartoon characters, such characters can be sure good examples that empower good conduct among children. Krish, for instance, always helps people of his surroundings. On the other side, there can be bad character that provides no moral lesson to children like Kidmara. Cartoons play an essential part in framing children"s perception about male and female. They observe the behaviour and action of the characters and try to copy them. Being susceptible to gender stereotypes that are portrayed on television, particularly in cartoon series, they reinforce those accepted behavior shown through media, in their lives. Likewise, in an article by Arma (2010), "The effect of cartoon movies on children's gender development", the focus is on pros and cons of animated series and the roles that are ascribed to cartoons. The paper claims that the cartoon movies are not limited to entertainment purposes but they involve socializing aspects, gender stereotyping being one of them. Further, Arma also highlights that characters in the movies can be both human and nonhuman or living or non-living objects. Non-living and non-human characters show human highlights, for example, they can talk, walk simply like people. These types of characters are important in the movies because of their human like features. In some cartoons, lifeless and animal characters play stereotypical female or male roles. In some cartoon movies, sex reassignment takes place wherein a female character disguises as male or vice-a-versa intrigued with magical realism. Likewise, in cartoon movies sex transformation also takes place which often creates uneasiness or nervousness among children. Children have no sense of understanding; they don"t realize that there exists a remarkable gap between reality and fantasy. Government of India has taken so many undertakings, and implements various plans, programmes in regard to this and so as the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting also initiated awareness programmes through television. No one can deny the power of television's extending reach and attractive programmes which not only entertains but it priors to educate the mass. Being affected by the third and the fourth wave of feminism in American society and its effect on Egyptian adolescents; since animated movies are mainly American produced. This study aimed to present the feminist narratives in animated films, one of the most popular film genres today. In this context, computer-animated fantasy film Brave, regarded as one of the feminist films in animation cinema, was included in the scope of the study and was investigated in line with feminist film theory.
