The slice includes a cut through the magnet wiring (niobium titanium), the beampipe and the steel magnet yokes. Particle beams in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have the same energy as a high-speed train, squeezed ready for collision into a space narrower than a human hair. Huge forces are needed to control them. Dipole magnets (2 poles) are used to bend the paths of the protons around the 27 km ring. Quadrupole magnets (4 poles) focus the proton beams and squeeze them so that more particles collide when the beams’ paths cross. There are 1232 15m long dipole magnets in the LHC.</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="594" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="a">AC</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="595" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="a">CERN Invenio WebSubmit</subfield> <subfield code="b">GENSBM</subfield> <subfield code="c">1</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"> <subfield code="2">SzGeCERN</subfield> <subfield code="a">Accelerators and storage rings</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="653" ind1="1" ind2=" "> <subfield code="a">LHC</subfield> <subfield code="9">CERN</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="653" ind1="1" ind2=" "> <subfield code="a">AC</subfield> <subfield code="9">CERN</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="653" ind1="1" ind2=" "> <subfield code="a">Museum Heritage Collection</subfield> <subfield code="9">CERN</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="690" ind1="C" ind2=" "> <subfield code="a">CERN</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="852" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="a">282</subfield> <subfield code="c"></subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2=" "> <subfield code="8">2302811</subfield> <subfield code="s">1844295</subfield> <subfield code="u">http://cds.cern.ch/record/2773288/files/coupe dipôle.JPG</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2=" "> <subfield code="8">2302811</subfield> <subfield code="s">17701</subfield> <subfield code="u">http://cds.cern.ch/record/2773288/files/coupe dipôle.jpg?subformat=icon-180</subfield> <subfield code="x">icon-180</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2=" "> <subfield code="8">2302811</subfield> <subfield code="s">18428</subfield> <subfield code="u">http://cds.cern.ch/record/2773288/files/coupe dipôle.gif?subformat=icon</subfield> <subfield code="x">icon</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="859" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="f">iliana.tatsi@cern.ch</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="876" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="j">Available</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="916" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="s">n</subfield> <subfield code="w">202124</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="922" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="b"></subfield> <subfield code="c"></subfield> <subfield code="d">58 cm</subfield> <subfield code="h"></subfield> <subfield code="i"></subfield> <subfield code="l"></subfield> <subfield code="p">8 cm</subfield> <subfield code="r"></subfield> <subfield code="v"></subfield> <subfield code="w">27.8 kg</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="941" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="a">CERN-OBJ-AC-041</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="980" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="a">MICROCOSM</subfield> </datafield> </record> </collection>
