Biblically, this aligns with the idea that God grants the desires of the righteous (<a href="/psalms/37-4.htm">Psalm 37:4</a>). The sweetness to the soul suggests a deep, internal joy that transcends mere physical satisfaction, pointing to the spiritual fulfillment found in alignment with God's will. In the context of Proverbs, wisdom literature often contrasts the outcomes of the wise and the foolish, emphasizing that true fulfillment comes from living according to divine principles.<p><b>but turning from evil is detestable to fools</b><br>This part of the verse contrasts the joy of fulfilled desires with the stubbornness of fools who reject moral correction. In biblical terms, a fool is someone who lacks wisdom and understanding, often choosing a path contrary to God's commands (<a href="/proverbs/1-7.htm">Proverbs 1:7</a>). The detestability of turning from evil to fools underscores their resistance to repentance and moral change. This reflects the broader biblical theme of the hardness of heart, as seen in Pharaoh's resistance to God's commands in Exodus. The fool's aversion to turning from evil highlights the spiritual blindness and pride that prevent them from experiencing the sweetness of a righteous life.<div class="vheading2">Persons / Places / Events</div>1. <b><a href="/topical/s/solomon.htm">Solomon</a></b><br>Traditionally attributed as the author of Proverbs, Solomon was the son of King David and known for his wisdom.<br><br>2. <b><a href="/topical/i/israel.htm">Israel</a></b><br>The nation to whom the Proverbs were originally addressed, providing guidance for living a life pleasing to God.<br><br>3. <b><a href="/topical/f/fools.htm">Fools</a></b><br>A recurring character in Proverbs, representing those who reject wisdom and moral instruction.<div class="vheading2">Teaching Points</div><b><a href="/topical/t/the_sweetness_of_fulfilled_desires.htm">The Sweetness of Fulfilled Desires</a></b><br>When our desires align with God's will, their fulfillment brings deep satisfaction and joy to our souls.<br><br><b><a href="/topical/t/the_folly_of_rejecting_righteousness.htm">The Folly of Rejecting Righteousness</a></b><br>Fools find it detestable to turn from evil because they are entrenched in their sinful ways, highlighting the importance of seeking wisdom.<br><br><b><a href="/topical/a/aligning_desires_with_god's_will.htm">Aligning Desires with God's Will</a></b><br>To experience the sweetness of fulfilled desires, we must ensure our desires are in harmony with God's purposes.<br><br><b><a href="/topical/t/the_danger_of_sinful_desires.htm">The Danger of Sinful Desires</a></b><br>Unchecked desires can lead to sin and destruction, emphasizing the need for discernment and self-control.<br><br><b><a href="/topical/t/the_role_of_wisdom_in_decision-making.htm">The Role of Wisdom in Decision-Making</a></b><br>Wisdom helps us discern between desires that are beneficial and those that lead us away from God.<div class="vheading2">Lists and Questions</div><a href="/top10/lessons_from_proverbs_13.htm">Top 10 Lessons from Proverbs 13</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/q/what_defines_the_holiness_of_god.htm">Do you wish to prosper and be in good health?</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/q/why_is_1914_key_to_jehovah's_witnesses.htm">When is it appropriate to love or hate?</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/q/how_is_'foolishness'_defined_today.htm">Proverbs 9:6 urges abandoning foolishness to truly live. This is usually taken to mean the desire of what is good and honest, when it is fulfilled and realized, is a source of highest joy and comfort to the wise. Septuagint, "The desires of the pious are sweet to the soul." <span class="cmt_word">But it is abomination to fools to depart from evil.</span> The antithesis is not very obvious, but it may be: it is sweet to a good man to obtain his wish; but for a wicked man to leave, to abandon evil to which he clings so fondly, is a detestable alternative. Or the latter clause may mean that the wicked will not give up the evil which makes the satisfaction of their desire impossible. But it is best to take the first clause as a general statement, viz. the satisfaction of desire is pleasant to all men; then the latter member gives a special case and will signify, "For the sake of this pleasure bad men will not give up their evil wishes and plans; they will pursue what they have set their heart upon because they hate the idea of foregoing their evil designs." Septuagint, "The deeds of sinners are far from knowledge," <span class="accented">i.e.</span> from practical wisdom, prudence, and piety. The Vulgate introduces quite another thought, "Fools abhor those who flee from evil." Compare the passage in Wisd. 2, concerning the sinner's hatred of the good. <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/proverbs/13-19.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">Desire</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1514;&#1468;&#1463;&#1488;&#1458;&#1493;&#1464;&#1443;&#1492;</span> <span class="translit">(ta&#183;&#8217;a&#774;&#183;w&#257;h)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_8378.htm">Strong's 8378: </a> </span><span class="str2">A longing, a delight</span><br /><br /><span class="word">fulfilled</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1504;&#1460;&#1453;&#1492;&#1456;&#1497;&#1464;&#1492;</span> <span class="translit">(nih&#183;y&#257;h)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Nifal - Participle - feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_1961.htm">Strong's 1961: </a> </span><span class="str2">To fall out, come to pass, become, be</span><br /><br /><span class="word">is sweet</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1514;&#1468;&#1462;&#1506;&#1457;&#1512;&#1463;&#1443;&#1489;</span> <span class="translit">(&#7791;e&#183;&#8216;&#277;&#183;ra&#7687;)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_6149.htm">Strong's 6149: </a> </span><span class="str2">To be sweet or pleasing</span><br /><br /><span class="word">to the soul,</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1500;&#1456;&#1504;&#1464;&#1425;&#1508;&#1462;&#1513;&#1473;</span> <span class="translit">(l&#601;&#183;n&#257;&#183;p&#772;e&#353;)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition-l &#124; Noun - feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5315.htm">Strong's 5315: </a> </span><span class="str2">A soul, living being, life, self, person, desire, passion, appetite, emotion </span><br /><br /><span class="word">but turning</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1505;&#1443;&#1493;&#1468;&#1512;</span> <span class="translit">(s&#363;r)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Qal - Infinitive construct<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5493.htm">Strong's 5493: </a> </span><span class="str2">To turn aside</span><br /><br /><span class="word">from evil</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1502;&#1461;&#1512;&#1464;&#1469;&#1506;&#1475;</span> <span class="translit">(m&#234;&#183;r&#257;&#8216;)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition-m &#124; Adjective - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_7451.htm">Strong's 7451: </a> </span><span class="str2">Bad, evil</span><br /><br /><span class="word">is detestable</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1493;&#1456;&#1514;&#1493;&#1465;&#1506;&#1458;&#1489;&#1463;&#1445;&#1514;</span> <span class="translit">(w&#601;&#183;&#7791;&#333;&#183;w&#183;&#8216;a&#774;&#183;&#7687;a&#7791;)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw &#124; Noun - feminine singular construct<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_8441.htm">Strong's 8441: </a> </span><span class="str2">Something disgusting, an abhorrence, idolatry, an idol</span><br /><br /><span class="word">to fools.</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1499;&#1468;&#1456;&#1437;&#1505;&#1460;&#1497;&#1500;&#1460;&#1431;&#1497;&#1501;</span> <span class="translit">(k&#601;&#183;s&#238;&#183;l&#238;m)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3684.htm">Strong's 3684: </a> </span><span class="str2">Stupid fellow, dullard, fool</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/proverbs/13-19.htm">Proverbs 13:19 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/proverbs/13-19.htm">Proverbs 13:19 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/proverbs/13-19.htm">Proverbs 13:19 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/proverbs/13-19.htm">Proverbs 13:19 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/proverbs/13-19.htm">Proverbs 13:19 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/proverbs/13-19.htm">Proverbs 13:19 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/proverbs/13-19.htm">Proverbs 13:19 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/proverbs/13-19.htm">Proverbs 13:19 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/proverbs/13-19.htm">Proverbs 13:19 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/proverbs/13-19.htm">Proverbs 13:19 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/proverbs/13-19.htm">OT Poetry: Proverbs 13:19 Longing fulfilled is sweet to the soul (Prov.
