element formulation for the investigation of the effects of a localized interfacial degeneration on the dynamic behavior of the [90˚/0˚] laminated composite plate employing the state-space technique is performed. The stiffness of the laminate is determined by assembling the stiffnesses of sub-elements. This includes an introduction of an interface layer adopting the virtually zero-thickness formulation to model the interfacial degeneration. Also, the kinematically consistent mass matrix and proportional damping have been formulated to complete the free vibration governing expression. To simulate the interfacial degeneration of the laminate, the degenerated areas are defined from the center propagating outwards in a localized manner. It is found that the natural frequency, damped frequency and damping ratio of the plate decreases as the degenerated area of the interface increases. On the contrary, the loss factor increases correspondingly. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dynamic%20finite%20element" title="dynamic finite element">dynamic finite element</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=localized%20interface%20degeneration" title=" localized interface degeneration"> localized interface degeneration</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=proportional%20damping" title=" proportional damping"> proportional damping</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=state-space%20modeling" title=" state-space modeling "> state-space modeling </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/16720/proportionally-damped-finite-element-state-space-model-of-composite-laminated-plate-with-localized-interface-degeneration" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/16720.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">296</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1909</span> Element-Independent Implementation for Method of Lagrange Multipliers</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gil-Eon%20Jeong">Gil-Eon Jeong</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sung-Kie%20Youn"> Sung-Kie Youn</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=K.%20C.%20Park"> K. To handle this problem, the method of Lagrange multipliers including classical and localized versions are the most popular technique. It essentially imposes the interface compatibility conditions by introducing Lagrange multipliers. However, the numerical system becomes unstable and inefficient due to the Lagrange multipliers. The interface element-independent formulation that does not include the Lagrange multipliers can be obtained by modifying the independent variables mathematically. Through this modification, more efficient and stable system can be achieved while involving equivalent accuracy comparing with the conventional method. A numerical example is conducted to verify the validity of the presented method. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=element-independent%20formulation" title="element-independent formulation">element-independent formulation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=interface%20coupling" title=" interface coupling"> interface coupling</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=methods%20of%20Lagrange%20multipliers" title=" methods of Lagrange multipliers"> methods of Lagrange multipliers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=non-matching%20interface" title=" non-matching interface"> non-matching interface</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/62168/element-independent-implementation-for-method-of-lagrange-multipliers" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/62168.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">403</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1908</span> On the Volume of Ganglion Cell Stimulation in Visual Prostheses by Finite Element Discretization</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Diego%20Luj%C3%A1n%20Villarreal">Diego Luján Villarreal</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Visual prostheses are designed to repair some eyesight in patients blinded by photoreceptor diseases, such as retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Its strong association with metabolic syndrome is postulated to be due to both mechanical and biochemical factors. Our study aims to study differential effect of metabolic risk factors on cartilage degeneration and regeneration at biomarker level. Design: After screening 281 patients presenting with knee pain, 41 patients who met the selection criteria were included and were divided into metabolic MetS OA and non-metabolic Non-MetS OA phenotypes using National Cholesterol Education Programme-Adult Treatment Panel-III NCEP ATP III criteria for metabolic syndrome. Serum Cartilage Oligomeric Matrix Protein COMP and Procollagen type IIA N terminal Propeptide PIIANP levels were used as tools to assess cartilage degeneration and regeneration, respectively. Results: 22 among 41 patients 53.66% had metabolic syndrome. Covariates like age, gender, Kellgren Lawrence KL grades were comparable in both groups. MetS OA group showed significant increase in serum COMP levels (p 0.03 with no significant effect on serum PIIANP levels (p 0.46. Hypertriglyceridemia showed independent association with both cartilage anabolism (p 0.03 and catabolism (p 0.03. Conclusion: Metabolic syndrome, though has no effect on cartilage regeneration tends to shift cartilage homeostasis towards degeneration with hypertriglyceridemia showing significant independent effect on cartilage metabolism. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=metabolic" title="metabolic">metabolic</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=syndrome" title=" syndrome"> syndrome</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cartilage" title=" cartilage"> cartilage</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=degernation" title=" degernation"> degernation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/172402/metabolic-syndrome-and-its-effects-on-cartilage-degeneration-vs-regeneration-a-pilot-study-using-osteoarthritis-biomarkers" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/172402.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">65</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1906</span> An Analysis of OpenSim Graphical User Interface Effectiveness</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sina%20Saadati">Sina Saadati</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> OpenSim is a well-known software in biomechanical studies. There are worthy algorithms developed in this program which are used for modeling and simulation of human motions. In this research, we analyze the OpenSim application from the computer science perspective. It is important that every application have a user-friendly interface. An effective user interface can decrease the time, costs, and energy needed to learn how to use a program. In this paper, we survey the user interface of OpenSim as an important factor of the software. This is because the user lacks focus on visualizing the contents due to the interaction mechanisms whereby multiple markers may need to be used to perform a particular function. In this research, we have designed a novel TUI user interface where multiple functions could be triggered similar to a natural keyboard thus allowing user to focus more on its digital contents such as 2D/3D, text input, animation and sound. Test results of the user interface with potential users and HCI experts revealed that the multiple functions user interface was new, preferred and appreciated more as opposed to marker based user interface. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=multimedia" title="multimedia">multimedia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=augmented%20reality" title=" augmented reality"> augmented reality</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=engineering" title=" engineering"> engineering</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=user%20interface" title=" user interface"> user interface</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=visualization" title=" visualization"> visualization</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/34793/interactive-multiple-functions-user-interface" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/34793.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">449</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1904</span> Oct to Study Efficacy of Avastin in Recurrent Wet Age Related Macular Degeneration and Persistent Diffuse DME</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Srinivasarao%20Akuthota">Srinivasarao Akuthota</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rajasekhar%20Pabolu"> Rajasekhar Pabolu</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Bharathi%20Hepattam"> Bharathi Hepattam</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Purpose: To assess the efficacy of intravitreal Avastin in subjects with recurrent wet AMD and persistent diffuse DME on the basis of OCT. It is shown that under the condition of the QDE-MNP characteristic relaxation time being much shorter than that of the QDE in free-space but much longer than the LSP lifetime. It is also shown that energy dissipation in the QDE-MNP system is relatively weak with the probability of the photon emission being about 0.75, a number which, rather surprisingly, does not explicitly depend on the metal absorption characteristics. The degree of entanglement measured by the concurrency takes the maximum value, while the distances between the QDEs and metal ball approximately are equal. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=metal%20nanoparticle" title="metal nanoparticle">metal nanoparticle</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=localized%20surface%20plasmon" title=" localized surface plasmon"> localized surface plasmon</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=quantum%20dipole%20emitter" title=" quantum dipole emitter"> quantum dipole emitter</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=relaxation%20dynamics" title=" relaxation dynamics"> relaxation dynamics</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/28289/relaxation-dynamics-of-quantum-emitters-resonantly-coupled-to-a-localized-surface-plasmon" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/28289.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">452</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1901</span> Delamination of Scale in a Fe Carbon Steel Surface by Effect of Interface Roughness and Oxide Scale Thickness</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=J.%20M.%20Lee">J. Among several mechanisms of this delamination behavior, the normal tensile stress to the substrate-scale interface has been described as one of the main factors. The stress distribution at the interface is also known to be affected by thermal expansion mismatch between substrate and oxide scale, creep behavior during cooling and the geometry of the interface. In this study, stress states near the interface in a Fe carbon steel with oxide scale have been investigated using FE simulations. The thermal and mechanical properties of oxide scales are indicated in literature and Fe carbon steel is measured using tensile testing machine. In particular, the normal and shear stress components developed at the interface during bending are investigated. Preliminary numerical sensitivity analyses are provided to explain the effects of the interface geometry and oxide thickness on the delamination behavior. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=oxide%20scale" title="oxide scale">oxide scale</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=delamination" title=" delamination"> delamination</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fe%20analysis" title=" Fe analysis"> Fe analysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=roughness" title=" roughness"> roughness</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=thickness" title=" thickness"> thickness</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=stress%20state" title=" stress state"> stress state</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/43731/delamination-of-scale-in-a-fe-carbon-steel-surface-by-effect-of-interface-roughness-and-oxide-scale-thickness" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/43731.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">344</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1900</span> A Comparative Study of Localized Rainfall and Air Pollution between the Urban Area of Sungai Penchala with Sub-Urban and Green Area in Malaysia</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mohd%20N.%20Ahmad">Mohd N. The high rainfall that partly added by localized rain had been seen as a threat of causing the flash floods and water quality deterioration in the area. The air pollution that consisted of mainly particulate matter (PM10), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ozone (O3) gave an alarming air pollution index (API) to the surrounding area. Comparison among urban area (Sungai Penchala), sub-urban (Gombak), and green areas (Jerantut plus Temerloh) with respect to the rainfall parameters and air pollutants, it was found that the degree of intensities of the parameters was positively related with the urbanization. The air pollutants especially NO2, SO2, and CO were in tandem with the increase of the rainfall. Specifically, if the water catchment area is physically near to the urban area, then the authorities need to look into related urban development program by considering the management of emitted pollutants with respect to the ecological setting of the urban area. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=urbanization" title="urbanization">urbanization</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=green%20area%20localized%20rainfall" title=" green area localized rainfall"> green area localized rainfall</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=air%20pollution" title=" air pollution"> air pollution</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sub-urban%20area" title=" sub-urban area"> sub-urban area</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/7841/a-comparative-study-of-localized-rainfall-and-air-pollution-between-the-urban-area-of-sungai-penchala-with-sub-urban-and-green-area-in-malaysia" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/7841.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">520</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1899</span> Effects of Boldenone Injections and Endurance Exercise on Hepatocyte Morphologic Damages in Male Wistar Rats</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Seyyed%20Javad%20Ziaolhagh">Seyyed Javad Ziaolhagh</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Background: The purpose of present study was to investigate, the effects of anabolic steroid Boldenone (BOL) with eight weeks of resistance training on structural changes in rat liver. Method: 21 Male adult Wistar rats, 12 weeks old and 228/53±7/94 g initial body weight were randomly assigned to three groups: group1: Control+ Placebo (C), group2: training+ Placebo (T), group3: Boldenone intramuscular injections 5mg/kg (B). The endurance training protocol consisted three exercise sessions weekly started by a 30-minute run with the speed of 12 m/min and lasted by 60min run with the speed of 30 m/min in 8 weeks. At the end of the experiment, for light microscopic study Slides were prepared. Results: Sections stained of rat's livers showed no any cell degeneration and cytoplasmic lipid vacuoles in all groups, but few samples were seen. Indeed, congested blood sinusoids, cell infiltration and degeneration were seen in the Boldenone-treated group. Hepatotoxic effects were severe in group treatment received 5 mg/kg and directly depended on the doses. Indeed, training group was no any hepatocyte degeneration, inflammation and congestion. Conclusion: The present results showed that BOL has a marked adverse effect on the liver tissue, even with low– dose and endurance training. As a result, athletes should aware of Boldenone dosage consumption. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=anabolic%20androgenic%20steroids" title="anabolic androgenic steroids">anabolic androgenic steroids</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Boldenone" title=" Boldenone"> Boldenone</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=blood%20congestion" title=" blood congestion"> blood congestion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cellular%20inflammation" title=" cellular inflammation"> cellular inflammation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cellular%20degeneration" title=" cellular degeneration"> cellular degeneration</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lipid%20vocuolations" title=" lipid vocuolations"> lipid vocuolations</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=endurance%20training" title=" endurance training"> endurance training</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/35964/effects-of-boldenone-injections-and-endurance-exercise-on-hepatocyte-morphologic-damages-in-male-wistar-rats" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/35964.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">430</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1898</span> Insight into Figo Sub-classification System of Uterine Fibroids and Its Clinical Importance as Well as MR Imaging Appearances of Atypical Fibroids</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Madhuri%20S.%20Ghate">Madhuri S. Contrast was administered when degeneration was suspected. Imaging appearances of Atypical fibroids and various degenerations in fibroids were studied. Fibroids were classified using FIGO Sub-classification system. Its impact on surgical decision making and clinical outcome were also studied qualitatively. Results: Intramural fibroids were most common (14 patients), subserosal 7 patients, submucosal 5 patients . 6 patients were having multiple fibroids. 7 were having atypical fibroids. (1 hyaline degeneration, 1 cystic degeneration, 1 fatty, 1 necrosis and hemorrhage, 1 red degeneration, 1 calcification, 1 unusual large bilobed growth). Fibroids were classified using FIGO system. In uterus conservative surgeries, the lesser was the degree of myometrial invasion of fibroid, better was the fertility outcome. Conclusion: Relationship of fibroid with mucosal and serosal layers is important in the management of symptomatic fibroid cases. Risk to fertility involved in uterus conservative surgeries in women of child bearing age group depends on the extent of myometrial invasion of fibroids. FIGO system provides better insight into the degree of myometrial invasion. Knowledge about the atypical appearances of fibroids is important to avoid diagnostic confusion and untoward treatment. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=degeneration" title="degeneration">degeneration</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=FIGO%20sub-classification" title=" FIGO sub-classification"> FIGO sub-classification</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=MRI%20pelvis" title=" MRI pelvis"> MRI pelvis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=uterine%20fibroids" title=" uterine fibroids"> uterine fibroids</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/161429/insight-into-figo-sub-classification-system-of-uterine-fibroids-and-its-clinical-importance-as-well-as-mr-imaging-appearances-of-atypical-fibroids" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/161429.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">92</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1897</span> Multiscale Cohesive Zone Modeling of Composite Microstructure</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Vincent%20Iacobellis">Vincent Iacobellis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kamran%20Behdinan"> Kamran Behdinan</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> A finite element cohesive zone model is used to predict the temperature dependent material properties of a polyimide matrix composite with unidirectional carbon fiber arrangement. The cohesive zone parameters have been obtained from previous research involving an atomistic-to-continuum multiscale simulation of the fiber-matrix interface using the bridging cell multiscale method. The goal of the research was to both investigate the effect of temperature change on the composite behavior with respect to transverse loading as well as the validate the use of cohesive parameters obtained from atomistic-to-continuum multiscale modeling to predict fiber-matrix interfacial cracking. From the multiscale model cohesive zone parameters (i.e. maximum traction and energy of separation) were obtained by modeling the interface between the coarse-grained polyimide matrix and graphite based carbon fiber. The cohesive parameters from this simulation were used in a cohesive zone model of the composite microstructure in order to predict the properties of the macroscale composite with respect to changes in temperature ranging from 21 ˚C to 316 ˚C. Good agreement was found between the microscale RUC model and experimental results for stress-strain response, stiffness, and material strength at low and high temperatures. Examination of the deformation of the composite through localized crack initiation at the fiber-matrix interface also agreed with experimental observations of similar phenomena. Overall, the cohesive zone model was shown to be both effective at modeling the composite properties with respect to transverse loading as well as validated the use of cohesive zone parameters obtained from the multiscale simulation. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cohesive%20zone%20model" title="cohesive zone model">cohesive zone model</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fiber-matrix%20interface" title=" fiber-matrix interface"> fiber-matrix interface</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=microscale%20damage" title=" microscale damage"> microscale damage</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=multiscale%20modeling" title=" multiscale modeling"> multiscale modeling</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/36952/multiscale-cohesive-zone-modeling-of-composite-microstructure" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/36952.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">488</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1896</span> Urbanization and Built Environment: Impacts of Squatter Slums on Degeneration of Urban Built Environment, a Case Study of Karachi</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mansoor%20Imam">Mansoor Imam</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Amber%20Afshan"> Amber Afshan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sumbul%20Mujeeb"> Sumbul Mujeeb</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kamran%20%20Gill"> Kamran Gill</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> An investigative approach has been made to study the quality of living prevailing in the squatter slums of Karachi city that is influencing the urbanization trends and environmental degeneration of built environment. The paper identifies the issues and aspects that have directly and indirectly impacted the degeneration owing to inadequate basic infrastructural amenities, substandard housing, overcrowding, poor ventilation in homes and workplaces, and noncompliance with building bye-laws and regulations, etc. Primarily, secondary data has been critically examined and analyzed which was however not limited to census data, demographic / socioeconomic data, official documents and other relevant secondary data were obtained from existing literature and GIS. It is observed that the poor and sub-standard housing / living quality have serious adverse impacts on the environment and the health of city residents. Hence strategies for improving the quality of built environment for sustainable living are mandated. It is, therefore, imperative to check and prevent further degradation and promote harmonious living and sustainable urbanization. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=squatter%20slums" title="squatter slums">squatter slums</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=urbanization" title=" urbanization"> urbanization</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=degenerations" title=" degenerations"> degenerations</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=living%20quality" title=" living quality"> living quality</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=built%20environment" title=" built environment"> built environment</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/63780/urbanization-and-built-environment-impacts-of-squatter-slums-on-degeneration-of-urban-built-environment-a-case-study-of-karachi" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/63780.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">393</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1895</span> A Brain Controlled Robotic Gait Trainer for Neurorehabilitation</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Qazi%20Umer%20Jamil">Qazi Umer Jamil</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Abubakr%20Siddique"> Abubakr Siddique</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mubeen%20Ur%20Rehman"> Mubeen Ur Rehman</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nida%20Aziz"> Nida Aziz</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mohsin%20I.%20Tiwana"> Mohsin I. Patients suffering from Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI) become unable to execute motion control of their lower proximities due to degeneration of spinal cord neurons. The presented approach can help SCI patients in neuro-rehabilitation training by directly translating patient motor imagery into walkers motion commands and thus bypassing spinal cord neurons completely. A non-invasive EEG based brain-computer interface is used for capturing patient neural activity. For signal processing and classification, an open source software (OpenVibe) is used. Classifiers categorize the patient motor imagery (MI) into a specific set of commands that are further translated into walker motion commands. The robotic walker also employs fall detection for ensuring safety of patient during gait training and can act as a support for SCI patients. The gait trainer is tested with subjects, and satisfactory results were achieved. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=brain%20computer%20interface%20%28BCI%29" title="brain computer interface (BCI)">brain computer interface (BCI)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=gait%20trainer" title=" gait trainer"> gait trainer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=spinal%20cord%20injury%20%28SCI%29" title=" spinal cord injury (SCI)"> spinal cord injury (SCI)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=neurorehabilitation" title=" neurorehabilitation"> neurorehabilitation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/107088/a-brain-controlled-robotic-gait-trainer-for-neurorehabilitation" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/107088.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">162</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1894</span> Electronic States at SnO/SnO2 Heterointerfaces</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=A.%20Albar">A. Often after forming operation, the sheet has defects requiring additional corrections steps. For example, in the drawing process, the formed sheet may have several defects such as springback, localized thinning and bends. All these defects are directly dependent on process, geometric and material parameters. The prediction and elimination of these defects requires the control of most sensitive parameters. The present study is concerned with a reliable parametric study of deep forming process in order to control the localized thinning. The proposed approach will be based on stochastic finite element method. Facebook was designed in the west, and the original language was English. Subsequently, the words in the user interface were translated to other languages, including Arabic. Arabic words are written from right to left, and English is written from left to right. The translated version may misrepresent the original design and users preferences may influence their culture, which should be considered in the user interface design. Previous research indicates that users are more comfortable when interacting with a user interface, which relates to their own culture. Therefore, this paper, using a survey investigates the preferences of Saudi Arabian on the Arabic version of user interface of Facebook. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=culture" title="culture">culture</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=social%20media" title=" social media"> social media</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=user%20interface%20design" title=" user interface design"> user interface design</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Facebook" title=" Facebook"> Facebook</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Saudi%20Arabia" title=" Saudi Arabia"> Saudi Arabia</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/18970/the-effect-of-culture-on-user-interface-design-of-social-media-a-case-study-on-preferences-of-saudi-arabian-on-the-arabic-user-interface-of-facebook" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/18970.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">398</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1889</span> Theoretical Analysis of Graded Interface CdS/CIGS Solar Cell</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hassane%20Ben%20Slimane">Hassane Ben Slimane</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dennai%20Benmoussa"> Dennai Benmoussa</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Abderrachid%20Helmaoui"> Abderrachid Helmaoui</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> We have theoretically calculated the photovoltaic conversion efficiency of a graded interface CdS/CIGS solar cell, which can be experimentally fabricated. In order to find the axial displacements, shear stress and interface debond length in a closed analytical form for different positions of the interface gap, the 1D modified shear lag analysis is used. The debond length is represented as a function of many parameters (frequency, magnitude, electric displacement, moisture and temperature, joint geometry, position of the gap along the interface, etc.). Then the Genetic algorithm (GA) is implemented to find this position of the gap along the interface at which a vanishing/minimal debond length is ensured, e.g to find the most harmless position for the safe work of the structure. The illustrative example clearly shows that analytical shear-lag solutions and GA method can be combined successfully to give an effective prognosis of interface shear stress and interface delamination in patch/layer structure at combined loading with existing defects. To show the effect of the position of the interface gap, all obtained results are given in figures and discussed. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=genetic%20algorithm" title="genetic algorithm">genetic algorithm</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=minimal%20delamination" title=" minimal delamination"> minimal delamination</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=optimal%20gap%20position" title=" optimal gap position"> optimal gap position</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=shear%20lag%20solution" title=" shear lag solution"> shear lag solution</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/74794/effect-of-an-interface-defect-in-a-patchlayer-joint-under-dynamic-time-harmonic-load" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/74794.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">302</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1887</span> Development of Sound Tactile Interface by Use of Human Sensation of Stiffness</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=K.%20Doi">K. In this study, we developed a sound tactile interface that makes use of the human sensation of stiffness. The interface comprises eight elastic objects having varying degrees of stiffness. Each elastic object is shaped like a column. When people with and without hearing disabilities press each elastic object, different sounds are produced depending on the stiffness of the elastic object. The types of sounds used were “Do Re Mi sounds.” The interface has a major advantage in that people with or without hearing disabilities can play with it. We found that users were able to recognize the hardness sensation and relate it to the corresponding Do Re Mi sounds. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=tactile%20sense" title="tactile sense">tactile sense</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sound%20interface" title=" sound interface"> sound interface</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=stiffness%20perception" title=" stiffness perception"> stiffness perception</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=elastic%20object" title=" elastic object"> elastic object</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/13051/development-of-sound-tactile-interface-by-use-of-human-sensation-of-stiffness" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/13051.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">285</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1886</span> BSYJ Promoting Homing and Differentiation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells at the Retina of Age-Related Macular Degeneration Model Mice Induced by Sodium Iodate</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lina%20Liang">Lina Liang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kai%20Xu"> Kai Xu</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jing%20Zhang"> Jing Zhang</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Purpose: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a major leading cause of visual impairment and blindness with no cure currently established. Cell replacement is discussed as a potential therapy for AMD. Besides intravitreal injection and subretinal injection, intravenous administration has been explored as an alternative route. This study is to observe the effect of BSYJ, a traditional Chinese medicine on the homing and differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells transplanted via tail vein injection in an age-related macular degeneration mouse model. Methods: Four-week-old C57BL/6J mice were injected with 40 mg/kg NaIO₃ to induce age-related macular degeneration model. At the second day after NaIO₃ injection, 1×10⁷ GFP labeled bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (GFP-MSCs) were transplanted via tali vein injection into the experimental mice. Then the mice were randomly divided into two groups, gavaged with either BSYJ solution (BSYJ group, n=12) or distilled water (DW group, n=12). 12 age-matched healthy C57BL/6J mice were fed regularly as normal control. At day 7, day 14, and day 28 after treatment, retina flat mounting was used to detect the homing of mesenchymal stem cells at the retina. Double-labeling immunofluorescence was used to determine the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells. Results: At 7, 14, 28 days after treatment, the numbers of GFP-MSCs detected by retina flatmount were 10.2 ± 2.5, 14.5 ± 3.4 and 18.7 ± 5.8, respectively in the distilled water group, while 15.7 ± 3.8, 32.3 ± 3.5 and 77.3 ± 6.4 in BSYJ group, the differences between the two groups were significant (p < 0.05). At 28 days after treatment, it was shown by double staining immunofluorescence that there were more GFP positive cells in the retina of BSYJ group than that of the DW group, but none of the cells expressed RPE specific genes such as RPE65 and CRALBP, or photoreceptor genes such as recoverin and rhodopsin either in BSYJ group or DW group. However, GFAP positive cells were found among the cells labeled with GFP, and the double labeling cells were much more in the BSYJ group than the distilled water group. Conclusion: BSYJ could promote homing of mesenchymal stem cells at the retina of age-related macular degeneration model mice induced by NaIO₃, and the differentiation towards to glial cells. The governing equations consist of the well-balanced two-layer shallow water equations for the water flow and a linear elastic model for the bed deformations. Deformations in the topography can be caused by a brutal localized force or simply by a class of sliding displacements on the bathymetry. This deformation in the bed is a source of perturbations, on the water surface generating water waves which propagate with different amplitudes and frequencies. Coupling conditions at the interface are also investigated in the current study and two mesh procedure is proposed for the transfer of information through the interface. In the present work a new procedure is implemented at the soil-water interface using the finite element and two-layer finite volume meshes with a conservative distribution of the forces at their intersections. The finite element method employs quadratic elements in an unstructured triangular mesh and the finite volume method uses the Rusanove to reconstruct the numerical fluxes. The numerical coupled method is highly efficient, accurate, well balanced, and it can handle complex geometries as well as rapidly varying flows. Numerical results are presented for several test examples of dam-break flows over deformable beds. Mesh convergence study is performed for both methods, the overall model provides new insight into the problems at minimal computational cost. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dam-break%20flows" title="dam-break flows">dam-break flows</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=deformable%20beds" title=" deformable beds"> deformable beds</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=finite%20element%20method" title=" finite element method"> finite element method</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=finite%20volume%20method" title=" finite volume method"> finite volume method</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hybrid%20techniques" title=" hybrid techniques"> hybrid techniques</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=linear%20elasticity" title=" linear elasticity"> linear elasticity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=shallow%20water%20equations" title=" shallow water equations"> shallow water equations</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/95218/a-finite-elementfinite-volume-method-for-dam-break-flows-over-deformable-beds" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/95218.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">181</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1881</span> Effect of the Drawbar Force on the Dynamic Characteristics of a Spindle-Tool Holder System</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jui-Pui%20Hung">Jui-Pui Hung</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yu-Sheng%20Lai"> Yu-Sheng Lai</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tzuo-Liang%20Luo"> Tzuo-Liang Luo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kung-Da%20Wu"> Kung-Da Wu</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yun-Ji%20Zhan"> Yun-Ji Zhan</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This study presented the investigation of the influence of the tool holder interface stiffness on the dynamic characteristics of a spindle tool system. The interface stiffness was produced by drawbar force on the tool holder, which tends to affect the spindle dynamics. In order to assess the influence of interface stiffness on the vibration characteristic of spindle unit, we first created a three dimensional finite element model of a high speed spindle system integrated with tool holder. The key point for the creation of FEM model is the modeling of the rolling interface within the angular contact bearings and the tool holder interface. The former can be simulated by a introducing a series of spring elements between inner and outer rings. The contact stiffness was calculated according to Hertz contact theory and the preload applied on the bearings. The interface stiffness of the tool holder was identified through the experimental measurement and finite element modal analysis. Current results show that the dynamic stiffness was greatly influenced by the tool holder system. In addition, variations of modal damping, static stiffness and dynamic stiffness of the spindle tool system were greatly determined by the interface stiffness of the tool holder which was in turn dependent on the draw bar force applied on the tool holder. Overall, this study demonstrates that identification of the interface characteristics of spindle tool holder is of very importance for the refinement of the spindle tooling system to achieve the optimum machining performance. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dynamic%20stiffness" title="dynamic stiffness">dynamic
