future. At the time, our workplace experience (WX) taskforce had been reimagining a more holistic and supportive work experience, but as Covid-19 took hold, those efforts turned towards evolving the way we work to meet a new set of challenges. That mission grew into WE@Audible, or workplace evolved, seeking to equip employees with resources and tools to feel supported and productive while working from home.

But where do we go from here? As vaccinations make it possible to return to something ‘closer to normal,’ what will the future of work at Audible look like? Or as Chief People Officer Anne Erni and Head of Talent and Culture Ara Tucker are asking, what should it look like? Erni and Tucker recently discussed this question in a LinkedIn Live session (which you can watch below), stressing the role of our Activate Caring People Principle. “Activate Caring informed how we adopt, adapt and change the future of our physical workplace,” says Erni, “and how we want to change it when we do go back.”

Erni describes a hybrid model emphasizing flexibility. “Work is not a place,” she says, “it can happen anywhere.” Employers across industries are discussing shifting to a dual-workspace world that encompasses our home offices and our physical office spaces, or “hubs.” This “hub and home” model lets us enjoy the social, in-person benefits of teamwork, brainstorms, scrums and so on, while the home office affords private work time and attention to personal needs. “I’m convinced agility is going to be the key for the future of work.”

Empathy also plays a huge role. Tucker points out that in addition to the pandemic, “we’re also grappling with a racial and social justice reckoning, charged political climates, and other seismic shifts happening around the globe.” Creating a truly supportive workplace environment requires making sure all voices are heard, and that all people feel comfortable being vulnerable. Tucker says she’s thinking about how to create a space where anyone can feel safe saying, “I’m not okay.”

Employee feedback has already informed changes in practices. “We’ll continue to listen to our employees, hear what their needs are, and allocate resources and make changes that solve their problems,” says Erni.

Watch the entire conversation below.

<img src="//images.ctfassets.net/3sa0209epr53/588JdeVqeKd9a2sC2UsiKF/f8e4b8f1ce30dbdb4dd6b8232a8f63e9/newsroom_futureofwork-live-thumbnail.PNG?w=720" alt="The two speakers from the LinkedIn Live conversation are showcased in their homes. At the time, our workplace experience (WX) taskforce had been reimagining a [more holistic and supportive work experience](https://www.audible.com/about/newsroom/reinventing-our-workplace-for-covid-19-and-beyond/), but as Covid-19 took hold, those efforts turned towards evolving the way we work to meet a new set of challenges. That mission grew into WE@Audible, or *workplace evolved*, seeking to equip employees with resources and tools to feel supported and productive while working from home.\n\nBut where do we go from here? As vaccinations make it possible to return to something ‘closer to normal,’ what will the future of work at Audible look like? Or as Chief People Officer Anne Erni and Head of Talent and Culture Ara Tucker are asking, what *should* it look like? Erni and Tucker recently discussed this question in a [LinkedIn Live session](https://www.linkedin.com/video/live/urn:li:ugcPost:6790272698288246785/) (which you can watch below), stressing the role of our Activate Caring [People Principle](https://www.audible.com/about/people-principles/). “Activate Caring informed how we adopt, adapt and change the future of our physical workplace,” says Erni, “and how we want to change it when we do go back.”\n\nErni describes a hybrid model emphasizing flexibility. “I’m convinced agility is going to be the key for the future of work.”\n\nEmpathy also plays a huge role. Tucker says she’s thinking about how to create a space where anyone can feel safe saying, “I’m not okay.”\n\nEmployee feedback has already informed changes in practices. “We’ll continue to listen to our employees, hear what their needs are, and allocate resources and make changes that solve their problems,” says Erni. \n\nWatch the entire conversation below."}},{"metadata":{"tags":[],"concepts":[]},"sys":{"space":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Space","id":"3sa0209epr53"}},"id":"64g78HVAQ0tA7dxhRsShDa","type":"Entry","createdAt":"2021-04-20T17:36:21.764Z","updatedAt":"2021-04-20T17:36:21.764Z","environment":{"sys":{"id":"master","type":"Link","linkType":"Environment"}},"publishedVersion":4,"revision":1,"contentType":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"ContentType","id":"newsVideo"}},"locale":"en-US"},"fields":{"youTubeLink":"https://youtu.be/4SMphQ0rjnk","vIdeoThumb":{"metadata":{"tags":[],"concepts":[]},"sys":{"space":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Space","id":"3sa0209epr53"}},"id":"588JdeVqeKd9a2sC2UsiKF","type":"Asset","createdAt":"2021-04-20T17:36:03.303Z","updatedAt":"2021-04-20T17:36:03.303Z","environment":{"sys":{"id":"master","type":"Link","linkType":"Environment"}},"publishedVersion":35,"revision":1,"locale":"en-US"},"fields":{"title":"newsroom futureofwork-live-thumbnail","description":"The two speakers from the LinkedIn Live conversation are showcased in their homes. A cross-functional team, focused on workplace experience (WX), had been formed in the fall of 2019 to ask probing questions and formulate solutions for delivering a distinctive employee experience.\n\nWith an initial goal of redesigning our work spaces over the course of several months in 2019 and early 2020, our team wanted to develop innovative ways of working that would be more flexible, durable and resilient in order to foster connection and collaboration across our global entities. Our focus shifted once Covid-19 took hold, though this initial work proved vital to our ability to respond thoughtfully and quickly to employees’ rapidly evolving needs, including juggling work with caring for children and loved ones, as we moved to working from home across the globe. \n\nOur updated “mission” is WE@Audible, which stands for *workplace evolved*, and our internal team includes employees from across Audible representing technology, HR, workplace, facilities, real estate, communications and brand. Designing and implementing solutions that meet employees’ needs today while also evolving our workplace permanently to meet the needs of tomorrow includes completely reimaging the role of our workplace in our day-to-day lives as we shift to a more flexible and remote work culture–balancing working from home and the in-person office experience. \n\n“Our employees and the places where they work are inextricably linked to their overall workplace experience,” says Chief People Officer [Anne Erni](https://www.audible.com/about/leadership/anne-erni/). “As we continue to imagine and invent for our customers and our communities, my goal for this team was to do the same for our employees by recreating a culture of work that works for them.”\n\nKelly DelRosso, Audible’s Senior Director, Design - People \u0026 Places, explains that the plan is to “listen-test-iterate” as new policies and procedures are rolled out. Tangible outcomes from this approach have included extending the ability to set flexible working hours to all employees’ company-wide and creating shorter, more outcome-focused meetings to help reduce employee burnout from too much screen time and back-to-back video calls. \n\nThese people-first policies that create a more holistic and supportive work environment are central to the cross-functional WX team’s mission of creating optimal spaces for work, like places to meet and congregate and also work individually. The team also continues to explore ways tech can help the company and employees’ achieve our goals with a “virtual-first” approach, through applications, equipment and other tools. And they prioritize employee health and wellbeing through weekly meditation sessions, virtual consultations with Audible’s resident dietician that include easy-to-make, healthy recipes, Q\u0026A sessions with leading clinical and social psychologists on how to manage stress and anxiety and more.\n\n“While Covid-19 has accelerated our efforts, we know there’s even greater opportunity ahead,” says [Ara Tucker](https://www.audible.com/about/leadership/ara-tucker/), Head of Talent and Culture at Audible. “There’s so much we can do to reimagine how we work to empower and equip our employees to bring their best on behalf of our customers and it’s great to be part of a team at the forefront of this effort.” \n"}}]}},{"metadata":{"tags":[],"concepts":[]},"sys":{"space":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Space","id":"3sa0209epr53"}},"id":"5zhFcBxC8x9OnOCNgBkC60","type":"Entry","createdAt":"2020-12-14T15:14:05.040Z","updatedAt":"2023-09-27T13:11:03.944Z","environment":{"sys":{"id":"master","type":"Link","linkType":"Environment"}},"publishedVersion":15,"revision":2,"contentType":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"ContentType","id":"newsPost"}},"locale":"en-US"},"fields":{"title":"Wellness in the Workplace: A Q\u0026A with Audible Employee Amy Garas","slug":"wellness-in-the-workplace-a-q-and-a-with-audible-employee-amy-garas","seo":{"metadata":{"tags":[],"concepts":[]},"sys":{"space":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Space","id":"3sa0209epr53"}},"id":"4qE412szdMg2LoXc2lR1JC","type":"Entry","createdAt":"2020-12-14T02:31:07.348Z","updatedAt":"2020-12-14T02:31:07.348Z","environment":{"sys":{"id":"master","type":"Link","linkType":"Environment"}},"publishedVersion":3,"revision":1,"contentType":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"ContentType","id":"pageSeo"}},"locale":"en-US"},"fields":{"pageTitle":"Wellness in the Workplace: A Q\u0026A with Audible Employee Amy Garas ","pageDescription":"Senior Manager of Spectrum \u0026 Belonging Amy Garas shares how she’s applying her meditation and wellness training to help fuel employees’ productivity and happiness, and to support their workplace experience and overall health. These initiatives are a central focus for “Mind Matters,” one of the founding pillars of [WE@Audible](https://www.audible.com/about/newsroom/reinventing-our-workplace-for-covid-19-and-beyond/), short for workplace evolved, that focuses on implementing solutions that meet employees’ needs in our current and future work environments.\n\nTo help employees achieve better balance, health and well-being, we’ve offered fireside chats, tools, and resources including guided meditations, and have provided 10 extra personal days and reimbursement for fitness- and wellness-related expenses as well as office equipment to create a more ergonomic home set-up. \n\nSince March, Garas has been leading weekly meditations for employees around the globe. She recently sat down with us to discuss her work and the importance of wellness in the workplace.\n\n###### Tell us about your role at Audible and how you started incorporating mindfulness into your day job.\nThe [Spectrum \u0026 Belonging](https://www.audiblecareers.com/spectrum-and-belonging) team focuses on creating an environment at Audible that embraces different perspectives and allows employees to bring their authentic selves to work each day. I work very closely with Audible’s network of employee-led [Impact Groups](https://www.audiblecareers.com/spectrum-and-belonging), which help guide the company on how best to support and celebrate the full spectrum of employees—and our customers. \n\nI started exploring mindfulness during middle school after visiting my best friend's mom’s new-age bookstore where they held various workshops. I’ve focused throughout my life on learning new modalities on a personal and a teacher level whenever I could so that I can use them personally and share with my loved ones—be it Reiki or becoming certified in meditation and mindfulness.\n\nWhen we first started working from home I held a few meditation sessions for close colleagues because, like the rest of the world, I was more stressed than usual and I could only imagine how people who didn’t have a daily practice might be faring. Those sessions quickly turned into a companywide series. Using my experience as meditation teacher has felt like an essential way I can be of service to my Audible family.\n\n###### What tools and resources have you developed as part of your meditation series for the Mind Matters initiative?\nThe weekly meditation sessions for Audible employees have focused on different topics like gratitude, breathing exercises, and self-compassion. Many of these sessions, including one with the founder of the Newark Center for Meditative Culture, were recorded so employees can listen at their leisure. I’ve also led smaller group meditation sessions with various teams across Audible, including an upcoming one with our customer service colleagues in Costa Rica.\n\nAn exciting offshoot that grew out of the program’s success was being asked by the WorkingWell team at Amazon, Audible’s parent company, to create and record meditations for their employees globally. You can listen to one [here](https://youtu.be/SN8xohCwwdk).\n\n###### How does meditation factor into well-being and why is that important in the workplace?\nThe beauty of meditation is that it allows us to exist in a space where there is no such thing as right or wrong, good or bad. There is nothing in that moment for us to fix or do. In addition to reducing anxiety, stress and depression, being more mindful enhances awareness and gives us perspective on what's truly important as we live and work amidst the multi-layered crisis of a global pandemic and the social injustices that have existed for centuries now coming to a head. \n\n###### How can people incorporate meditation into their everyday lives? \nStart small and schedule time on your calendar as a reminder. Even if you can only dedicate a few minutes before your first meeting, it's better than not meditating at all. Those minutes will help you create space to approach your day with a fresh mindset. If you can't get to it throughout your day, meditating before bed can help ease you into a restful night of sleep. \n\n###### Do you have any Audible recommendations that can help get people started?\nI highly recommend listening to the [Audible Sleep collection](https://www.audible.com/ep/sleep) for meditations to help you decompress and sound baths that calm the mind and body. My other recommendations are *[The Monkey Is the Messenger](https://www.audible.com/pd/The-Monkey-Is-the-Messenger-Audiobook/B07HWYKYX9)* by Ralph De La Rosa, *The New Earth* by Eckhart Tolle, *[The Body Keeps the Score](https://www.audible.com/pd/The-Body-Keeps-the-Score-Audiobook/B00OAOQJXY)* by Bessel Van der Kolk, and *[Accessing the Healing Power of the Vagus Nerve](https://www.audible.com/pd/Accessing-the-Healing-Power-of-the-Vagus-Nerve-Audiobook/B07FK3NP77)* by Stanley Rosenberg.\n"}}]}},{"metadata":{"tags":[],"concepts":[]},"sys":{"space":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Space","id":"3sa0209epr53"}},"id":"4T220qAhgYDbalDFjXrjwa","type":"Entry","createdAt":"2021-03-25T00:12:47.294Z","updatedAt":"2023-09-27T13:10:12.260Z","environment":{"sys":{"id":"master","type":"Link","linkType":"Environment"}},"publishedVersion":29,"revision":4,"contentType":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"ContentType","id":"newsPost"}},"locale":"en-US"},"fields":{"title":"How Public-Private Initiatives Can Sustain Our Cities","slug":"how-public-private-initiatives-can-sustain-our-cities","seo":{"metadata":{"tags":[],"concepts":[]},"sys":{"space":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Space","id":"3sa0209epr53"}},"id":"G37LbieyadhaS8jeIKd9c","type":"Entry","createdAt":"2021-03-24T23:19:35.036Z","updatedAt":"2021-03-31T15:01:01.125Z","environment":{"sys":{"id":"master","type":"Link","linkType":"Environment"}},"publishedVersion":10,"revision":4,"contentType":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"ContentType","id":"pageSeo"}},"locale":"en-US"},"fields":{"pageTitle":"How Public-Private Initiatives Can Sustain Our Cities ","pageDescription":"At the SXSW Festival, we discussed how to keep cities thriving through community investment models, like Newark Working Kitchens, with Newark Mayor Ras J. For years in Newark, and in cities like Newark, you've had people driving from the suburbs—parking in their office buildings, taking the elevator up to their offices. You could actually work in Newark and never step foot in a Newark neighborhood and breathe the air…but that's the exact opposite of what companies like Audible believe in and what we're striving for now.”\n\nGlover shared how much economic development Newark was seeing pre-pandemic and how the initiatives incubated in the city have value for other corporations and cities worldwide.
