investigating musculoskeletal impairments associated either with misuse, such as tissue overload of farmers during agricultural works, or with diseases, such as osteoarthritis and muscular dystrophy. </p><p>We develop analytical and finite element-based computational modeling approaches in order to understand the role of mechanics in biological systems, to make predictions about the stress and strain fields developed in biological tissues, and to evaluate hypotheses in silico, aiming at discovering new therapeutic treatments for musculoskeletal dysfunctions or improving the existing ones, class="project-abstract mb-1"> An anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear is a devastating injury to an athlete and unfortunately is one of the more common knee injuries in athletes involved in rapid deceleration moves. An ACL deficient knee has a very high risk of instability, subsequent injury, and long-term osteoarthritis. It is estimated that between 100,000 and 250,000 of these injuries occur each year in the United States (no data for Europe). Reconstruction of the ACL is commonly performed to restore stability to the knee and allow the patient to return to a healthy and active lifestyle. The past 2 decades have seen significant advancements in the ability to restore stability and function to an ACL deficient knee with a primary ACL reconstruction. Although the procedure and rehabilitation has become more predictable, it still requires many months of rehabilitation and time away from the sports. After committing the time, effort and expense of a primary ACL reconstruction, to have it then re-tear is not only a frustrating and discouraging event for all involved, but there is also growing evidence that the long-term health of the knee is then at even greater risk Recent prospective analysis of a multicenter cohort has shown failure rate after ACL reconstruction to be 3.0 % at 2 years and a systematic review of randomized- controlled trials showed this rate to be 3.6 % at short-term follow-up. Revision ACL reconstruction is clinically challenging and associated with worse clinical outcomes than primary reconstructions, and a recent systematic review revealed a 13.7 % overall failure rate. Avoidable technical errors, including tunnel malposition, inadequate fixation, and failure to address concomitant malalignment and/or ligamentous injuries, have been implicated in 53–79 % of primary ACL graft failures. Due to the aforementioned reasons the development of an effective treatment to restore ACL function to avoid any postoperative complications is an important health and societal challenge. In current clinical practice, the ACL reconstruction plan is selected from a standard menu of options rather than customized to the unique characteristics of the patient. Furthermore, the treatment selection process is normally based on subjective clinical experience rather than objective prediction of post-treatment function. The net result is treatment methods that are less effective than desired at restoring lost knee joint’ s function. Although the usual population associated with the condition is the elderly (65 years old ranges from 12- 30%), who are mostly inactive, athletes and younger individuals are also susceptible. Whilst the available data have implicated the role of the various modifiable or non-modifiable risk factors in the development and progression of OA, no study has conclusively explored the interaction and integration of other information sets in a patient-specific manner. The current OACTIVE project intends to make a significant leap forward adopting a multi-scale holistic approach where patient-specific information from various levels, including cell, tissue, organ and whole body will be integrated and combined with information from other sources such as biochemical/ inflammatory biomarkers, behavior modeling and social/environmental risk factors to generate robust predictors for new personalized interventions for delaying onset and slowing down progression of OA. OACTIVE targets to patient-specific OA prediction and interventions by using a combination of mechanistic, phenomenological computational models, simulations and big data analytics. Once constructed, these models will be used to simulate and predict optimal treatments, better diagnostics, and improved patient outcomes. Overcoming the limitation of the current treatment interventions, Augmented Reality empowered interventions will be developed in a personalized framework allowing patients to experience the treatment as a more enjoyable, resulting in greater motivation, engagement, and training adherence. This awareness can be used for action planning of robots and coordination between robots and humans (Cheein et al., 2015). One of the potential domains for such application is agricultural intensive production systems where operational links in the production and supply chain are seen as emerging areas of human-robots synergetic approaches. The project objective is to develop a knowledge-based human-robot synergistic system for high-value crops (HVCs) handling operations including out-door harvesting and in-door storage in order to achieve an overall improved efficiency in HVCs logistics. Research will be performed along two axes with the aim: i. To improve human-machine synergy by introducing augmentation technologies to support machine’s situation awareness including workers’ activities, and ii.
