This number appears at the top of the caption on the first page of all documents issued by OALJ and BALCA. If you do not know the case number, contact OALJ at 202-693-7300.</p> <p>You will need to input the case number in this format: <code>yyyyaaannnnn</code> Here is an example: <code>2000bla00001</code></p> <p>The OALJ/BALCA case number has three components: (1) the Fiscal Year in which the case was docketed, (2) a three letter acronym for the case type, and (3) the sequential number of the filing. For example, 2005BLA00011 would be the eleventh black lung case filed in Fiscal Year 2005.</p> <p>In the case search box:</p> <ul> <li>Use the full year for the Fiscal Year (<em>i.e.</em>, 2005 instead of 05). Note that Fiscal Years for the federal government begin on October 1, rather than January 1 as in a calendar year.</li> <li>For the Case Type, use the three letter case type acronym. A list of the acronyms used by OALJ is found below.</li> <li>Use zeros in front of the sequential number of the case (<em>i.e.</em>, 00011 instead of 11).</li> </ul> </div> </div> <div class="row"> <div class="large-12 columns"> <h2>Lookup Using Case Number of Agency Below:</h2> <p>If you do not know the OALJ or BALCA case number, but know the case number assigned by the agency from which the case originated, you can try inputting that number. This alternative search will only work if that number exactly matches a datafield in the OALJ Case Tracking System. This alternative method does not work for black lung cases docketed prior to 2017 because the OWCP number was not tracked in the OALJ Case Tracking System.</p> <p>Here are some examples of how agency case numbers are typically formatted:</p> <ul> <li>OWCP Longshore Case Number: <code>00-000000</code> (LHWCA;
