And no sign shall be given it, except the sign of the prophet Jonah.<Fr> And leaving them, He departed.<p> <A name="6"></a><p class="hdg">The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/8.htm#14">Mark 8:14–21</a>; <a href ="../luke/12.htm">Luke 12:1–3</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>His disciples having come to the other side forgot to take bread. <A name="7"></a><span class="red"><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And Jesus said to them; <FR>See and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.<Fr> <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And they were reasoning among themselves, saying, That it is because we did not take bread. <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And Jesus knowing said to them, <FR>Why do you reason among yourselves, O ye of little faith, because you did not take bread?<Fr> <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span><FR>Do you not yet understand? do you not remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?<Fr> <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span><FR>Nor the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets you took up?<Fr> <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span><FR>How do you not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread, to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.<Fr> <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then they understood that He did not say to beware of the leaven of the (bread) of the Pharisees and Sadducees, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.<p> <A name="14"></a><p class="hdg">Peter’s Confession of Christ<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/8.htm#27">Mark 8:27–30</a>; <a href ="../luke/9.htm#18">Luke 9:18–20</a>; <a href ="../john/6.htm#67">John 6:67–71</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And Jesus having come into the regions of Caesarea Philippi, asked His disciples, saying, <FR>Whom do the people say that I, the Son of man, am?<Fr> <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And they said, Some, John the Baptist; and some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets. <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And He says to them, <FR>But whom do you say that I am?<Fr> <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And Simon Peter responding said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And Jesus responding said to him, <FR>Blessed art thou, Simon the son of Jonah: because flesh and blood did not reveal it to thee, but my Father who is in the heavens.<Fr> <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span><FR>And I say to thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock will I build my Church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.<Fr> <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span><FR>And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of the heavens: and whatsoever you may bind on the earth, shall be bound in the heavens; and whatsoever you may loose on earth shall be loosed in the heavens.<Fr> <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Then He commanded His disciples that they should tell no one that He is the Christ.<p> <A name="22"></a><p class="hdg">Christ’s Passion Foretold<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/8.htm#31">Mark 8:31–33</a>; <a href ="../luke/9.htm#21">Luke 9:21–22</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>And from this time Jesus began to show to His disciples, that it behooves Him to go away to Jerusalem, and to suffer many things from the elders and the chief priest and the scribes, and to be killed, and rise the third day. <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And Peter taking Him to him, began to rebuke Him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord; because this shall not be unto thee. <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And turning He said to Peter, <FR>Get behind me, adversary: thou art my stumbling-block; because thou art not thinking about the things of God, but those of men.<Fr><p> <A name="25"></a><p class="hdg">Take Up Your Cross<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/8.htm#34">Mark 8:34–38</a>; <a href ="../luke/9.htm#23">Luke 9:23–27</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Then Jesus said to His disciples, <FR>If any one wishes to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.<Fr> <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span><FR>For whosoever may wish to save his soul shall lose it: and whosoever may lose his soul for my sake shall find it.<Fr> <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span><FR>For what is a man profited, if he may gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
