everyone<MH3605> who hears<MH8085> will laugh<MH6711> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>with me.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/21-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And she said<MH559>, “Who<MH4310> would have said<MH559> to Abraham<MH85> that Sarah<MH8283> would nurse<MH3243> children<MH1121>? Yet<MH3588> I have given<MH3205> birth<MH3205> to a son<MH1121> in his old<MH2208> age<MH2208>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/21-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And the child<MH3206> grew<MH1431> and was weaned<MH1580>, and Abraham<MH85> held<MH6213a> a great<MH1419> feast<MH4960> on the day<MH3117> that Isaac<MH3327> was weaned<MH1580>. <p class="hdg">Sarah Turns against Hagar</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/21-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Now Sarah<MH8283> saw<MH7200> the son<MH1121> of Hagar<MH1904> the Egyptian<MH4713>, whom<MH834> she had borne<MH3205> to Abraham<MH85>, mocking<MH6711> <i>Isaac.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/21-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Therefore she said<MH559> to Abraham<MH85>, “Drive<MH1644> out<MH1644> this<MH2088> slave<MH519> woman<MH519> and her son<MH1121>, for the son<MH1121> of this<MH2088> slave<MH519> woman<MH519> shall not be<MH3423> an<MH3423> heir<MH3423> with my son<MH1121> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>Isaac<MH3327>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/21-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>The matter<MH1697> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>distressed<MH7489a> Abraham<MH85> greatly<MH3966> because<MH5921, 182> of his son<MH1121> <i>Ishmael.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/21-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>But God<MH430> said<MH559> to Abraham<MH85>, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>Do not be distressed<MH7489a> because<MH5921> of the boy<MH5288> and your slave<MH519> woman<MH519>; whatever<MH3605, 834> Sarah<MH8283> tells<MH559> you, listen<MH8085> to her, for through<MH4480> Isaac<MH3327> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>your descendants<MH2233> shall be named<MH7121>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/21-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And of the son<MH1121> of the slave<MH519> woman<MH519> I will make<MH7760> a nation<MH1471> also<MH1571>, because<MH3588> he is your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>descendant<MH2233>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/21-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>So Abraham<MH85> got<MH7925> up<MH7925> early<MH7925> in the morning<MH1242> and took<MH3947> bread<MH3899> and a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>skin<MH2573> of water<MH4325>, and gave<MH5414> <i>them</i> to Hagar<MH1904>, putting<MH7760> <i>them</i> on her shoulder<MH7926>, and <i>gave her</i> the boy<MH3206>, and sent<MH7971> her away<MH7971>. And she departed<MH1980> and wandered<MH8582> about<MH8582> in the wilderness<MH4057b> of Beersheba<MH884>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/21-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>When the water<MH4325> in the skin<MH2573> was used<MH3615> up<MH3615>, she <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>left<MH7993> the boy<MH3206> under<MH8478> one<MH259> of the bushes<MH7880>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/21-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Then she went<MH1980> and sat<MH3427> down<MH3427> opposite<MH4480, 5048> him, about a bowshot<MH2909, 7198> away<MH7368>, for she said<MH559>, “May I not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>see<MH7200> the boy<MH3206> die<MH4194>!” And she sat<MH3427> opposite<MH4480, 5048> him, and raised<MH5375> her voice<MH6963> and wept<MH1058>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/21-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>God<MH430> heard<MH8085> the boy<MH5288> crying<MH6963>; and the angel<MH4397> of God<MH430> called<MH7121> to Hagar<MH1904> from heaven<MH8064> and said<MH559> to her, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>What<MH4100> is the matter with you, Hagar<MH1904>? Do not fear<MH3372a>, for God<MH430> has heard<MH8085> the voice<MH6963> of the boy<MH5288> where<MH834, 8033> he is. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/21-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Get<MH6965> up<MH6965>, lift<MH5375> up<MH5375> the boy<MH5288>, and hold<MH2388> him by <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>the hand<MH3027>, for I will make<MH7760> a great<MH1419> nation<MH1471> of him.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/21-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Then God<MH430> opened<MH6491b> her eyes<MH5869>, and she saw<MH7200> a well<MH875> of water<MH4325>; and she went<MH1980> and filled<MH4390> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>skin<MH2573> with water<MH4325> and gave<MH8248> the boy<MH5288> a<MH8248> drink<MH8248>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/21-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And God<MH430> was with the boy<MH5288>, and he grew<MH1431>; and he lived<MH3427> in the wilderness<MH4057b> and became<MH1961> an archer<MH7235b, 7199>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/21-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>He lived<MH3427> in the wilderness<MH4057b> of Paran<MH6290>, and his mother<MH517> took<MH3947> a wife<MH802> for him from the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>. <p class="hdg">Covenant with Abimelech</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/21-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Now it came<MH1961> about<MH1961> at that time<MH6256> that Abimelech<MH40> and Phicol<MH6369>, the commander<MH8269> of his army<MH6635>, spoke<MH559> to Abraham<MH85>, saying<MH559>, “God<MH430> is with you in all<MH3605> that you do<MH6213a>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/21-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>so now<MH6258>, swear<MH7650> to me here<MH2008> by God<MH430> that you will not deal<MH8266> falsely<MH8266> with me or with my offspring<MH5209> or with my descendants<MH5220>, but according to the kindness<MH2617a> that I have shown<MH6213a> to you, you shall show<MH6213a> to me and to the land<MH776> in which<MH834> you have resided<MH1481a>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/21-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Abraham<MH85> said<MH559>, “I swear<MH7650> it.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/21-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>But Abraham<MH85> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>complained<MH3198> to Abimelech<MH40> because<MH5921, 182> of the well<MH875> of water<MH4325> which<MH834> the servants<MH5650> of Abimelech<MH40> had seized<MH1497>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/21-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>And Abimelech<MH40> said<MH559>, “I do not know<MH3045> who<MH4310> has done<MH6213a> this<MH2088> thing<MH1697>; you did not tell<MH5046> me, nor<MH1571, 3808> did I hear<MH8085> of it <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>until<MH1115> today<MH3117>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/21-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>So Abraham<MH85> took<MH3947> sheep<MH6629> and oxen<MH1241> and gave<MH5414> them to Abimelech<MH40>, and the two<MH8147> of them made<MH3772> a covenant<MH1285>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/21-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>But Abraham<MH85> set<MH5324> seven<MH7651> ewe<MH3535> lambs<MH3535> of the flock<MH6629> by<MH905> themselves<MH905>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/21-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>Then Abimelech<MH40> said<MH559> to Abraham<MH85>, “What<MH4100> do these<MH428> seven<MH7651> ewe<MH3535> lambs<MH3535> mean, which<MH834> you have set<MH5324> by<MH905> themselves<MH905>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/21-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>He said<MH559>, “You shall take<MH3947> these seven<MH7651> ewe<MH3535> lambs<MH3535> from my hand<MH3027> so<MH5668> that<MH5668> it may be a witness<MH5713a> for me, that I dug<MH2658> this<MH2088> well<MH875>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/21-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Therefore<MH5921, 3651> he called<MH7121> that place<MH4725> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>Beersheba<MH884>, because<MH3588> there<MH8033> the two<MH8147> of them took<MH7650> an<MH7650> oath<MH7650>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/21-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>So they made<MH3772> a covenant<MH1285> at Beersheba<MH884>;
