Their second album's been out almost a year -- this is the fifth, final single. The song's accompanying clip, which follows a kid as he discards his shirt and dances his way through a city, has a lonesome feeling to it despite his energy and the fact that he picks up some partners along the way. The atmosphere lets up for at least part of the beautiful Martin de Thurah-directed video for track two, "When I Grow Up." (If Dreijer ends up making a video for track three "Dry And Dusty" next, I'll begin to suspect some kind of serialized project for the collection). I figure either you incorporate imagery of the namesake <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090216185027/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veckatimest_Island">uninhabited isle</a>, or create sort of a hand-drawn collage of various geometric shapes rendered in pastels and earth tones to capture the breadth of emotion and mood-spanning mystery conjured by the title's syllabic string. I'm familiar with, and have listened to, the San Francisco's songwriter's <em>Mockingbird</em> and <em>Can't Go Back</em>, but this is more classic and dusty seeming that I remembered. While still clearly pop, there's a hazy weight to it, like what you might find with the best autumnal Zombies (or maybe via a track by one of his Gnomonsong label's owners, Andy Cabic). The entire collection was capture via analog tape, which might have something to do with it, or it could be all the out-of-focus press photos he's taken. On this new project and its self-titled LP, the organizing principle is less Luke's alluring, wispy vocal androgyny and more patterns in sound, often repetitive folk-guitar figures buried in the fuzz of his 4-track, percussion, and analog synths. "Tunnelvision" is the first single, tapping all those points, and getting a video that is every bit as sketchily psychedelic and vaguely evocative as its source track.
