I’m the eldest of 4 sisters and money used to be tight. I started working little jobs in my teens, saving the majority of what I made. The feeling of having savings was a great relief.</p><p id="6e71" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs np nq nr hv ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh gn bk">Later, when I wanted to be a writer, I didn’t initially choose that path because everyone told me I’d never make a living off of it. So I studied engineering and went to business school. Writing was just a side gig for many years.</p><p id="add0" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs np nq nr hv ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh gn bk">Today, I am a writer and I make good money off it. But it was a long and tiring journey.</p><p id="ff70" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs np nq nr hv ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh gn bk">Freelancing for peanuts, being exploited by startups doing all kinds of tasks no one else wanted to do, working my way up through the ranks at major tech companies, and starting my own business.</p><p id="e071" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs np nq nr hv ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh gn bk">All of these are chapters of my story.</p><p id="a35f" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs np nq nr hv ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh gn bk">I was paid late, too little, sometimes not at all. I was laid off, had my hours reduced, and got sick.</p><p id="2d5d" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs np nq nr hv ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh gn bk">It made me very aware of how fickle income streams can be.</p><p id="099e" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs np nq nr hv ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh gn bk">So I’ve started doing a few things to increase my sense of financial security and independence.</p></div></div></div><div class="ab cb oi oj ok ol" role="separator"><span class="om by bm on oo op"></span><span class="om by bm on oo op"></span><span class="om by bm on oo"></span></div><div class="gn go gp gq gr"><div class="ab cb"><div class="ci bh fz ga gb gc"><h2 id="467e" class="oq or gu bf os ot ou dy ov ow ox ea oy nv oz pa pb nz pc pd pe od pf pg ph pi bk">1. Save more than you think you should</h2><p id="6458" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs pj nq nr hv pk nt nu nv pl nx ny nz pm ob oc od pn of og oh gn bk">Even if it’s just <em class="po">a little</em> more.</p><p id="b232" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs np nq nr hv ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh gn bk">It’s easy to feel like you can buy whatever you when your income is affluent. In a world consumed by consumerism (see what I did there) saving is one of the hardest things to do. I too like nice, fancy, expensive things.</p><p id="4bff" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs np nq nr hv ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh gn bk">Set your monthly savings goal a little higher than it needs to be and make sure it’s the first thing that increases when you get a raise — not spending.</p><h2 id="e0d6" class="oq or gu bf os ot ou dy ov ow ox ea oy nv oz pa pb nz pc pd pe od pf pg ph pi bk">2. You’re only as safe as your investment strategy</h2><p id="9c64" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs pj nq nr hv pk nt nu nv pl nx ny nz pm ob oc od pn of og oh gn bk">Whether that’s a high-interest savings account, stocks, funds, land in your local woods, or property doesn’t matter. But make sure you make those savings work for you and not just leave them in your bank account where they may only lose value.</p><p id="eda6" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs np nq nr hv ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh gn bk"><em class="po">Seeing</em> how money can increase once invested is what it takes for most people to <em class="po">understand</em> its true value. Before you experience it yourself, it will remain an idea that’s hard to grasp.</p><h2 id="7c93" class="oq or gu bf os ot ou dy ov ow ox ea oy nv oz pa pb nz pc pd pe od pf pg ph pi bk">3. Inventory is life</h2><p id="3f80" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs pj nq nr hv pk nt nu nv pl nx ny nz pm ob oc od pn of og oh gn bk">Probably my favorite point here. I constantly review what we have in the house and sell and trade things we don’t use or need. This isn’t just for the little extra money that comes out of it but mostly to learn our habits and needs better.</p><p id="8ad9" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs np nq nr hv ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh gn bk">More often than I’d like an item that we thought we<em class="po"> really</em> needed ends up being given away after a few months. There’s learning here.</p><p id="75fa" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs np nq nr hv ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh gn bk">The better you understand what you need and cherish, the less stuff you buy.</p><h2 id="4314" class="oq or gu bf os ot ou dy ov ow ox ea oy nv oz pa pb nz pc pd pe od pf pg ph pi bk">4. Find a community</h2><p id="3646" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs pj nq nr hv pk nt nu nv pl nx ny nz pm ob oc od pn of og oh gn bk">Often overlooked in today’s capitalist society is the power (and possible savings!) of a community. Bonding with your neighbors or any other local tribe can save you a lot of dollars, pesos, euros, crowns. Here’s how it has helped us:</p><ul class=""><li id="de1e" class="nm nn gu no b hs np nq nr hv ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh pp pq pr bk">we trade children’s toys and clothes with our neighbors instead of buying new ones</li><li id="7be9" class="nm nn gu no b hs ps nq nr hv pt nt nu nv pu nx ny nz pv ob oc od pw of og oh pp pq pr bk">parents in daycare organize to help each other out with babysitting</li><li id="9235" class="nm nn gu no b hs ps nq nr hv pt nt nu nv pu nx ny nz pv ob oc od pw of og oh pp pq pr bk">there are cheap or free events and activities in the neighborhood so we don’t have to go to expensive city venues a lot for entertainment</li><li id="1c5f" class="nm nn gu no b hs ps nq nr hv pt nt nu nv pu nx ny nz pv ob oc od pw of og oh pp pq pr bk">we borrow equipment e.g. for renovation, gardening, and cleaning in local community groups</li><li id="c66c" class="nm nn gu no b hs ps nq nr hv pt nt nu nv pu nx ny nz pv ob oc od pw of og oh pp pq pr bk">a general sense of belonging is fulfilling; it releases the same hormones that buying a new pair of shoes from an Instagram influencer does. Let that sink in.</li></ul><h2 id="b246" class="oq or gu bf os ot ou dy ov ow ox ea oy nv oz pa pb nz pc pd pe od pf pg ph pi bk">5. Avoid loans if you can</h2><p id="85b6" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs pj nq nr hv pk nt nu nv pl nx ny nz pm ob oc od pn of og oh gn bk">Besides our mortgage, I had loans twice in my life and their burden became overbearing in times of financial uncertainty. This is why I recommend you avoid any kind of loan (yes, also Klarna and Afterpay) if you can.</p><p id="33a8" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs np nq nr hv ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh gn bk">If you’re not able (<em class="po">or comfortable)</em> to spend the money on something now, you probably can’t afford it. It’s not always possible, of course, but many people I know with loans have them for totally avoidable things like vacations or a second car.</p><h2 id="eae2" class="oq or gu bf os ot ou dy ov ow ox ea oy nv oz pa pb nz pc pd pe od pf pg ph pi bk">6. Make stuff</h2><p id="82e0" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs pj nq nr hv pk nt nu nv pl nx ny nz pm ob oc od pn of og oh gn bk">An unconventional savings tip that gives me incredible joy.</p><p id="60c8" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs np nq nr hv ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh gn bk">As a creative, I love making things. Writing poetry, growing something, pottery. All of these give me as much if not more joy than buying something. The more I make, the less I have an urge to spend money.</p><p id="3cf4" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs np nq nr hv ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh gn bk">Plus, you could learn skills that extend the life of your stuff (like repairing holes in clothes) or make life’s essentials cheaper (like gardening and cooking).</p><h2 id="8cdd" class="oq or gu bf os ot ou dy ov ow ox ea oy nv oz pa pb nz pc pd pe od pf pg ph pi bk">7. Don’t put your eggs in one basket</h2><p id="5675" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs pj nq nr hv pk nt nu nv pl nx ny nz pm ob oc od pn of og oh gn bk">Having a stable job is a great privilege. Still, I think you shouldn’t fully rely on it.</p><p id="cebb" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs np nq nr hv ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh gn bk">Other income streams give a great sense of security and independence that I believe can only benefit individuals in today’s society. From selling planners on Etsy to freelancing, making additional income on the side adds up, especially if you use it to boost your savings.</p><p id="bbdc" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs np nq nr hv ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh gn bk">Who has the time you ask? Well, it’s a matter of prioritization as many things. It can be worth it to crunch for a few weeks for a passive income stream that may provide for you for years ahead.</p><h2 id="8e2f" class="oq or gu bf os ot ou dy ov ow ox ea oy nv oz pa pb nz pc pd pe od pf pg ph pi bk">8. Life’s not free but it’s not that expensive</h2><p id="7512" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs pj nq nr hv pk nt nu nv pl nx ny nz pm ob oc od pn of og oh gn bk">Lastly, when I have a really bad freakout about dying in poverty, I try to remind myself that yes, life feels expensive right now but it doesn’t have to be. I choose to live in one of the most expensive cities in the world due to my job right now. But I could move somewhere else where a house would cost 80% less, food and childcare would be cheaper, I wouldn’t need to commute or feel the need to dress fancy and in style...</p><p id="0d6e" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs np nq nr hv ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh gn bk">It’s a good reminder that we get used to a certain lifestyle influenced by our surroundings, the people we interact with on a daily basis, and the media.</p><p id="aac2" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs np nq nr hv ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh gn bk">I challenge you to question yourself: how much of that lifestyle truly appeals to you and how much is just your brain on auto-pilot buying and doing things because everyone else does? And will you always want this lifestyle? Maybe. I know I won’t and there’s a little country house in my not-so-distant future. Money will stretch a little further there.</p></div></div></div><div class="ab cb oi oj ok ol" role="separator"><span class="om by bm on oo op"></span><span class="om by bm on oo op"></span><span class="om by bm on oo"></span></div><div class="gn go gp gq gr"><div class="ab cb"><div class="ci bh fz ga gb gc"><p id="06e7" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs np nq nr hv ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh gn bk">Worrying about money is almost always directly correlated with worrying about our future and that is extremely stressful for our nervous system.</p><p id="9c0e" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn gu no b hs np nq nr hv ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh gn bk">When people around you are losing their jobs, the worry starts feeling more and more real.
