<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Center for Global Sustainability (CGS) Director <a href="https://cgs.umd.edu/our-community/faculty-staff/nathan-hultman">Nathan Hultman</a> will take a leave of absence this fall semester to work as Senior Advisor in the Office of the U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, based in the U.S. Department of State.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>The Office of the U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, led by Special Envoy John Kerry, leads the Biden Administration鈥檚 international and domestic engagement on climate change. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>In this position, Hultman will be working on numerous key environmental issues. Hultman will be focusing on U.S.-China discussions on climate, the U.S. Long Term Strategy, preparations for the United Nation's Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26), bilateral engagements with other key countries, and other topics that link domestic and international climate policy.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p>This work is largely informed and a continuation of CGS's analysis of national ambition and pathways to reduce emissions from all-of-society. CGS's programs and experts will continue to inform policy and collaborations for enhanced climate action leading up to the COP and beyond. </p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Hultman previously worked in the Obama Administration White House on the Council on Environmental Quality's climate and energy policy team from 2014-2016. Hultman鈥檚 work in the Obama Administration also centered around both domestic and international climate policy. Hultman helped develop the U.S. 2025 climate target, worked on U.S. bilateral engagements with China, and supported negotiations for the Paris Agreement. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
