<A name="6"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/9-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>for is it not as easy to say, thy sins are forgiven? as to say, arise, and walk? <A name="7"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/9-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>only it was fit you should know that the son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins: arise, then, said he, to the paralytic, take up thy bed, and march home. <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/9-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>and he arose, and returned to his family. <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/9-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>at this the multitude were amazed, and glorified God, for having communicated such power to men.<p> <A name="10"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Calls Matthew<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/2.htm#13">Mark 2:13–17</a>; <a href ="../luke/5.htm#27">Luke 5:27–32</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/9-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>As Jesus left that place, he saw one Matthew by name, sitting at the customhouse: and said to him, follow me, and he rose and followed him.<p> <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/9-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>and while Jesus was at table in Matthew's house, several publicans and loose people happen'd to come in, who sat down with him and his disciples. <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/9-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>which the Pharisees observing, why, said they to his disciples, is your master so familiar with publicans and such loose people? <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/9-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Jesus hearing that, said to them, they that are in health don't want a physician, but they that are sick. <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/9-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>go then and learn the meaning of that expression, "I will have mercy and not sacrifice:" for I am not come to call saints, but sinners.<p> <A name="15"></a><p class="hdg">Questions about Fasting<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/2.htm#18">Mark 2:18–20</a>; <a href ="../luke/5.htm#33">Luke 5:33–35</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/9-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then John's disciples came to him and said, why do the Pharisees, as well as we, observe so many fasts, and your disciples keep none? <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/9-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Jesus answer'd them, can the bride-men mourn, while the bridegroom is with them? the day indeed will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then will be the time to fast.<p> <A name="17"></a><p class="hdg">The Patches and the Wineskins<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/2.htm#21">Mark 2:21–22</a>; <a href ="../luke/5.htm#36">Luke 5:36–39</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/9-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>new cloth is never patch'd upon an old garment: for the patch will draw the garment, and rend it still worse. <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/9-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>neither do men put new wine into old skins: if they should, the bottles will burst, so that the wine will be lost and the skins be spoil'd: but they put new wine into new skins, whereby both are preserved.<p> <A name="19"></a><p class="hdg">The Healing Touch of Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/5.htm#21">Mark 5:21–43</a>; <a href ="../luke/8.htm#40">Luke 8:40–56</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/9-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Whilst he thus entertain'd them, the ruler of the synagogue came and made his address to him, saying, my daughter is upon the point of death: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live. <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/9-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>so Jesus arose, together with his disciples, and follow'd him.<p> <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/9-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>When a woman, who had been troubled with an hemorrhage twelve years, came behind him, and touch'd the hem of his garment. <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/9-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>for she said within her self, if I do but touch his garment, I shall be cured: <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/9-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>but Jesus turned about, and looking upon her, said, daughter lay aside your fears, thy faith hath cured thee: and the woman was cured from that instant.<p> <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/9-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>When Jesus came to the ruler's house, he found a set of flute-players and a crowd of people making a lamentable cry, <A name="25"></a><span class="red"><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/9-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>and he said to them, withdraw, for the maid is not dead, but asleep, and they treated him with contemptuous laughter. <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/9-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>but when the company were turn'd out, he went in, and grasping her hand, the maid rose up. <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/9-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>the fame whereof was spread over all the country.<p> <A name="28"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Heals the Blind and Mute<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/7.htm#31">Mark 7:31–37</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/9-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>As Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying out, son of David, have mercy on us. <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/9-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>and when he was got into the house, the blind men advanc'd: and Jesus said to them, do ye think I am able to effect this cure?
